Content

New video is live!

content warning: musical deals with themes of suicide throughout. Chapters 2, 8, and 10 do not contain triggering content

I don't know why the title says 9+, patreon took 3 attempts to make this post so I'll just add this to the description instead of editing the title

Cheeseborne

Is there a tech problem with this video? I can’t seem to watch it on YouTube or Patreon. :/

Chris L Kendall

I’m not the only one who imagined this as a Portlandia bit, thank you

Cheeseborne

I see that it was fixed. Never mind! :)

Emily Jacobson

Is there a problem with this video playing for anyone else?

Addie

This video is my inexplicable thing that puts me to sleep. Here I am once again at 2am. Goodnight ya’ll!

Paulie Paul

Yayy! I am scrolling backwards through the timeline and I am SO gonna rewatch this because while I'm pretty sure I'd seen some of Jenny's content here and there in my pre-Patreon days, THIS was the first one back in the day that really grabbed me and made me appreciate just how good she is at this (and how devastatingly funny she is). It helped that I had recently seen the movie adaptation (having never seen the stage musical, but liking some of the songs) and was gobsmacked by how utterly awful it was, on so many levels, and again, only knowing the songs, finding out that it wasn't just a bad movie adaptation of a (supposedly) "great" musical, but was in fact a bad movie adaptation of a very flawed original. I know I am going to enjoy this rewatch! EDIT: almost forgot, this thumbnail and the Evan cosplay in general is one of my all time Jenny faves! EDIT 2: also almost forgot... at the time when I first saw this video, I noticed the runtime and was like "an HOUR and seventeen minutes?! When am I going to have time to watch that?! I guess I'll start it..." (again, I was mostly unfamiliar with Jenny's work). Needless to say I was hooked, and even ended up watching it again the next night. FINAL EDIT (maybe): ALSO also I can't believe I almost forgot, this quote pops up pretty often in my head and makes me laugh every time: "And the answer is: because it's not a very good play, you guys" 🤣

Atzirii Meza

Sameeeee this one and the Peter Pandom on repeat !!!

Katherine Allen

Oh my gosh I’ve been dying for this I hate this movie

Lucía

when you said thoroughly, you meant THOROUGHLY (thank you jenny!! 🥰)

Kybayon

Thank you jenny very cool

Simon Nichols

I'm new to the channel and just finished binge-watching the recent material! Super stoked that this just dropped.

Luis

Thank you Jenny!! And don't let the haters on twitter get you down we know how hard you work and how hard you've been working and all that effort is why your videos are the best out there!

Lory

omggg my blood pressure spikes whenever you release an hour+ video. Never stop doing this pls. Also, I don't watch musicals ever, but I listen to the soundtracks literally always, and Sincerely Me showed up in one of my AI generated playlists, and I was 100% sure Dear Evan Hansen was a black comedy about a boy taking advantage of this kid's suicide. I'm very disappointed I was only halfway right.

Michael

Can't wait to put some time aside this weekend and watch this!

Morgan Osborne

Yessss I’m laying in bed sick and this is the best thing to happen to me in days 🥲

Torie Berke

optimistic of you to assume itll still be up this weekend :p. May the copyright odds be ever in Jenny's favor.

Patrick Harris

Excellent content warning, by the way. Thank you!

Sgt Sweetcheeks

"the store brand of Next To Normal" may be the best description of Anybody Have a Map and DEH as a whole

Natalia Mazzoni Ramos

In which Jenny shows how much more a fan of musicals she is than I imagined, she references Elisabeth das Musical, I nearly choked!

bingo bango

Great stuff jenny! Thanks for the new video

Michael

It wouldn't stay up here though??

Jack

9+

Bullseye

So did One Direction rip off Tenacious D?

Frankie

So glad I subbed to your Patreon recently Jenny. Love your ramble vids. Looking forward to watching this when I get the chance ❤️❤️

Abby Stewart

delicious. finally some good fucking food

emchovy

Ooh delicious content yumyumyum

Harry

I'd never even heard of this before you posted about it but now I've been sitting here for an hour enthralled by this whole debacle. A+ work.

Ramona Mantegani

Thank you for mentioning Tonya Head, because that was exactly what I was thinking about watching that movie. It is just baffling to me that anyone thought this story was not only okay, but worthy of awards.

Emma Bracy

delighted that my first Patreon credit video is the roasting of Dear Evan

Richard Reeves

I wish Patreon had flair, so I could claim "A quiet confused softboy" as mine.

Saschi

okay, how could Naruto running away from a conversation not be in the "things I like" list?? I've never related to anything more.

Shred Cadmium

I like how in the credits we have a 'T', a 't', and a 'tea' ☕️ that's fun 😁 also it seems like the battle for last credit is hotting up 😆

UK73

I noped out of the film when they started faking e-mails. His actions before that could be forgiven / understood. But that, nope and goodbye - so am keen to hear your take.

Thomas Hartwell

What's weird about Platt's gesticulations is this is one of the first things they train out of you in theatre classes. Movement and gestures are so crucial to stage acting and it's typically the thing any actor who's had theatre training nails (c.f. Patrick Stewart in TNG). So it's weird that Platt specifically fumbles in this way, and I almost wonder if it's a consequence of the direction--especially when they choose to frame him in so often in such tight shots that any hand movement sticks out immediately. (all of which is to say this performance would've been way overdone on stage, too--especially in a theatre as relatively small as the Music Box)

Bees McBee

Holy shit you have the Erica and Annalise Barbies. I had the Annalise one when I was younger and I really regret selling it.

Luis

Is it bad that this is the hardest I've laughed in months? But I guess our hatred for Dear Evan Hansen is really what united us all in the end.

Dan Gibbins

Could I have skipped to part three, having watched the preview two or three times? Sure. Did I? Absolutely not. There were too many incredible laugh moments to list here, but "Instead of Phil Collins, it's a creepy old man" and the Flexible Funding joke need shoutouts, I had to watch them twice.

AK Barratt

I'm dying to know what's in the candy bowl.

Nathan

The density of sick burns in your videos is actually tiring.

Shiny Skunk

I'll never understand the amount of homophobic jokes in musicals, like. Yes, musical theater, a genre known for its heterosexuality!

micah

i think its specifically because musical theater is seen as "gay" (which is a bad thing if you are homophobic), those jokes are an attempt to distance themselves

Papa Q. Bear

Ha, the "sitting" montage reminded of the "shot, reverse shot" montage from the old Plinkett Attack of the Clones review.

emergre

I feel like the “how did he print this by accident” thing could have been solved so easily by him just having a bunch of other tabs open, maybe one with like a school assignment or a form on it or something.

Cathy

I love the much-deserved Pasek and Paul bashing

Q

I got to the part like 45 minutes in that made Jenny scream in fear, she TOLD me she screamed in fear, and I still screamed in fear

Amanda Kay

Thank you for specifically addressing that scene where he lurches toward Zoe while singing “I love youuuuuuuuuu.” (Also, for addressing how shallow the musical/movie are about mental health.)

Amanda Kay

Genuinely horrifying

Katie Kraynak

the cauldron of ricola cough drops was just calling out to me the whole video

Daniel Billo

Jenny: Such as Javert's Suicide in Le Mis- Me: Play the sound play the sound play the sound Russell Crowe: THWAMP Me: YAY!

Spencer Hastings

I’m just so here for jenny’s musical takes.

Jenny Nicholson

the pound sign wasn't actually the first character under google drive's sorting but I felt I should go with the spirit of the name

Jenny Nicholson

Yep and/or the bell ringing so he has to rush, ADR of the librarian warning that they only had 5 minutes til the bell, etc etc

Jenny Nicholson

it's actually a spider bowl I found at target. it's a smaller version of the massive one I saw at pottery barn for like $80

Katie Kraynak

ohhhh as a small giant spider patron, i love the on screen representation via the small version of a giant spider bowl

Sabrina de la Garza

So surreal seeing my name on the list of patrons on the end haha. Jenny typed my name with her own two hands! Or maybe a bot did it idk

Amanda Valleroy

The whole “I love you because I watch you from afar” trope is definitely horrifying enough without Ben Platt scream-cry-singing it in your face

AppleSnaps

There are so many places where I had to pause the video because I needed a moment to laugh.

Andrew Hill

But for real there's another Andrew Hill in the credits my namesake, cousin, family, join me in the fight for Nancy Drew Halloween content. If we absorb eachother (I don't love this) we become more powerful I think! Our votes will, count more...!

Monica McFadden

Loved the Javert music as he jumps out of the tree, perfection

Dash

Once again I am staggered by both your critical acumen and your absolutely cutting wit. Bravo.

Dash

Whoa, I totally missed that. Good catch.

Daina

Took me a long time to realise you were wearing make up and not just horribly ill

Fintan

Read this comment before getting to that bit of the video and holy shit, that is a viscerally terrifying moment

Shred Cadmium

😨 Like something out of Truth or Dare

Hal Forbis

I've been watching a lot of Portlandia recently, and every time I saw Ben Platt in the video, I thought he was Fred Armisen about to sing a song about how much he loves pasta, and he starts crying because Nance wants him to cut down on how much pasta he eats

Spencer Hastings

Second watch comment: wait trees aren’t hollow!

Evan Wachholz

This one was a difficult watch for me

Iris Celestine

I appreciate that the first row of the patreon credits was cut off in such a way that it ends on a bunch of Evans

Ilana Galpert

Take it from a real ilana, the name means tree in hebrew

Benjamin Ng

3 minutes in and im already laughing my ass off XD

ginger

I have to begrudgingly admit that I really love some of the songs, but I knew them before I knew the plot of the play. What seemed like a really sweet, heartfelt love song seems horrific in context. Also, I can't get enough of your critiques! Thanks for taking time out of the Evermore video for this fun ride! The tree metaphor, so good. P.S. I still love for forever (especially the arrangement where 4 Evans sing it!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-PJRZD3lEw

M

It’s still so funny that so many people(including some of my friends) thought that it was a play about a gay relationship. That would’ve been better and it’s still what I choose to imagine when I listen to for forever 😔

itsotter

Really like when Jenny calls out thematic incoherency.

Luis

Do they still give out the Golden Raspberry Awards? Dear Evan Hansen won't win any Oscars but it would sweep the Razzies!

Daina

I always thought this! I don’t know why

Olivia

Anyone else notice that all the old ramble videos are gone?

Torie Berke

They arent! She made a pinned post with all the rambles in it on a new channel

Sabrina Rei

I'm convinced that Ben Platt's Evan Hansen face should be the new Michael Myers mask. Do we know that they aren't in the same universe? I mean, maybe Halloween Kills ends with him being unmasked and Halloween Ends begins with him picking up the new (scarier) one.

Sabrina Rei

You probably thought it was Love, Simon which is about that.

Spencer Hastings

Is Evan’s therapist aware of what Even is doing the whole time? Surely they should be like “Hey buddy this seems like a bad idea” even if Evan doesn’t tell the therapist what he is doing the town is small and this is all Very Big News. So like unless the therapist is an idiot or living under a rock they should be able to put two and two together.

AudreyDuck

*Sits in the dark drinking wine like Cersei Lannister, wearing a “Great Comet of 1812” t-shirt*

Bryan Sutton

Well thought-out and presented. You really broke it down and helped me comprehend why I found this movie to be so incomprehensible.

Dan Gibbins

I can't tell whether or not the "Things I liked" section on this video is shorter than the "Things I liked" section on Escape From Tomorrow. That's pretty damning. Definitely shorter than Vampire Diaries, though.

Rushka Unverricht

The "I looove youuuu" while gliding ominously toward Zoe, and Evan almost but not quite kissing his mother on the lips were laugh out loud funny. The segment on the tree symbolism at the end was fascinating. The whole video seemed to breeze by; a fun, well thought through critique. Definitely worthy of a 9+ rating. Thanks for another great video Jenny!

Mark E

It’s so frustrating to me that of everything Pasek and Paul have written so far, their two objectively best scores (Dogfight and James and the Giant Peach) are practically unknown, while dreck like DEH, La La Land and Greatest Showman win them awards. Is there no justice?

Dee Crosier

Great video, thank you! For what it’s worth, I really liked Ben Platt in “The Politician” TV series, and was keen to see more of his work… then this movie came along, and quickly quashed that desire...

Conor

Almost 800k in a day in a half.

Zander Chin

In listened the the cast recording of the stage version before watching this. It proved unrewarding.

Winona Honey

I REALLY loved putting the music from Javert’s Suicide over Evan jumping out of the tree, that was such a good touch. That and the flexible funding joke were *chef’s kiss*

Aaron Smith

I am quite convinced this thing is truly godawful. The main actor feels really pedo serial killer. Must be said

Filemon Tursas

that's wasn't really that subtle tho

M

I also believed that at first and was annoyed to learn the truth.

Winona Honey

We here at Don Bluth Productions are happy to announce the new voice of Little Foot, Ben Platt! Cannot wait for the Land Before Time 15: The Horrible Tree Metaphor

Winona Honey

I thought of something funny to say I have no where else to post this

Luis

1 MILLION VIEWS in just 2 days 👀 congrats!!!

emelsi

it's so weird seeing people like Ben Platt and not knowing where I know him from and then realizing he's a minor character in Pitch Perfect. those movies are full of people who are huge stars in some medium I know nothing about like Broadway, or like when someone was telling me the German guy is like a massive streamer

Jiminy’s Journal

Clearly, Patreon thinks this is for ages 9 and up. Which is…something.

Sky Norman

Anyone wondering if the movie title is meta? And the content in the movie *is* a letter Evan Hansen wrote to himself about what's happened? Like how 300 was over-the-top cause it's being told by Dilios to the rest of Sparta? I kinda want to watch the movie and I can't tell if is the kind that's so bad it's interesting or if it's like the Star Wars Holiday Special

2026-10-07 10:00 I never considered that the story was being stealth narrated until Jenny joked that the movie feels like propaganda written by Evan. A part of me wants to believe that this and "The Greatest Showman" are metacommentaries by Pasek & Paul about how audiences will accept even the most flawed protagonists if the songs are catchy and sincere enough.

I enjoyed the google image search for Deer Evan Hansen.

Porge

Watching this for like the third time and when I came back to it after stopping for dinner I saw that I'd paused on a close-up of Evan dropping his notecards and realised that he SHAVED HIS ARMS FOR THIS

The therapist might feel it's inappropriate to bring their personal feelings into the therapy session, and might want it to be solely a sounding board for Evan. Therapists are only human, and this is part of finding a good therapy fit.

KK_Slider

I don’t know why, but I freaking lost it when I heard Julianne Moore say “There’s not another truck in the driveway” 😆

G

So I was never ever planning on watching this movie for two reasons. 1) it is clearly abominable 2) I went to high school with Ben Platt (well over ten years ago) and it makes watching even the clips of this movie SO MUCH WEIRDER OH MY GOD. To plagiarize from my own comment on the video, I now have to re-contextualize my entire teenage experience and now picture sweaty warbling Madam Tussauds wax figure Ben t-rex stalking around the school quad in the background. Horrifying. But thank you for the ugly laugh Jenny and very excited to be a new patron

Zain Abdullah

I just wanted to say I went to the school where this movie was filmed and there was a student who who straight up took a dump right where Evan gave his memorial speech to Connor in the auditorium

TJ Westen

Super late to the party, but this is one of my favorite videos on all of YouTube.com
