The Church Play Cinematic Universe

Actually I’m just bitter because I didn’t get the role of Sarabi. I swear the actor who plays Luke Moonwalker, Marty McFly, and a bunch of other roles is a blonde Lance Guest who played the lead in The Last Starfighter. I scoured the internet for proof and couldn’t find any so either I’m totally wrong or Lance erased all evidence of his involvement in these productions!

rektem322

That pastor seems pretty far up his own ass. And every time there are girls on stage the men make the vibe wierd. Also why do these old people star in this instead of kids? It's like people living out their big Broadway fantasy. It's so wild.

Katelyn Benson

The moment in the medieval themed one where the drawbridge lowers and Jesus is just sitting there smiling, the fake British accent “he’s alive!” followed by the off pitch “everybody dance now!” Is comedy GOLD. I rewatched that part four times. This video is my comfort video sometimes I get the songs stuck in my head specifically how they are sung in these church plays so I have to come rewatch it.

SinceWayLastMay

I think Robin’s “Devil went down to Georgia” nightmare might be a weird reference to “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream” from “Book of Mormon”. Maybe. That feels like a pretty controversial reference for a Mega church though so idk

Veronica Siuta

The character the pastor is doing an impression of in “Joy Story” as he plays Ken is an old Saturday night live skit. It was Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon play two Austrian Body builders. Their catchphrase is “We want to pump *clap* you up.” I think they were meant to be making fun of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Anyway, I think that’s where the accent and references to fitness come from. A parody of a parody, just like the Michael Jackson/Weird Al reference. It wasn’t that funny

VorpalThumb

I'm sitting here repeating "Hi-ho!" to determine if I have a Kermit the Frog impression, and no, no I don't.

VorpalThumb

A toast to Choir Director Thea! Long may she reign!

Katie Kraynak

so excited! I saw you talking about this on Twitter and have been hype ever since 🥰

Babbity.Kate

When I saw the video length my heart did a little leap of pure joy

stela

omg yayyy!!!

Katie Kraynak

Aragog’s hat is amazing I love his church lady cosplay

Pzombo

Yayy!! I'm so pumped!

Chi.exe

Feature length video, can't wait to watch!

Reese

Oh man, I am not prepared for the cringe this will bring me, let's gooooo

Evan Samanas

YES. So glad you made it by VidCon!

Shred Cadmium

The copyright bots can’t quite believe it so they keep rewinding the good bits and calling in their colleague bots from the CPU next door to point & laugh 🤖

Samwise

A new video on my birthday, what a nice surprise 🥳🎂

Ryan Kearns

🙏 can’t wait to watch this one 🙏

Jenny Nicholson

Yes haha I'm supposed to leave in an hour and I haven't even packed

Austin F

i dunno if anyone's said yet, but the 'captain jack' song is an adaptation of a song that's literally just called 'captain jack'. i know it from DDR, of all things. lol

Chris Tierney

I'm a few minutes in and I'm already reeling. "an Easter cabaret of racially-charged songs": oh no *the Asian crew member bows*: oh NO *the "Oriental riff" plays*: OH NOOOOOO--

Josh Swafford

What’s so funny is that the rapping in the Star Wars “Counting Stars” number isn’t even an original rap, it’s a butchered rendition of the Christian rap song “Don’t Waste Your Life”

Petie

Fingers crossed that the Lords of Copyright grant you passage into the public realms!

Jennifer Joan

The Captain Jack song is actually called Captain Jack, I don't think it was ever actually popular but I remember it from DDR.

Luis

Thank you Jenny!! Hope it's still up by the time I get off work. Why won't they leave you alone 😔

Jennifer Joan

Also, you'd think if they're trying to make musicals, they'd try to find some people who can sing.

Bethany

i think the weird niche jokes in the star wars play were more mennonite jokes? i’m from canada and grew up in the church and this was not a common thing but i think manitoba has a higher mennonite population. could be wrong though

Eric Cheung

The Lion King from Judah has a joke from The Other Guys "Aim for the bushes!"

shy_froglet

I feel like I should go watch The Princess Bride now as a palette cleanser

Dan Gibbins

Cracks me up every single time. Perfect smash cut.

Trystan

It was huge where I lived. In 1995.

Audrey

I was seriously excited for the Church Play Cinematic Universe full video to a slightly embarrassing degree.

Jason Perez

I’m finally gonna experience a release in the main channel after subscribing 8 months ago!!

H. Banana

Hell yeah, happy birthday to me!

Beth Curtin

I'm a Canadian freak and I got weirdly excited for Bud the Spud.

Jillian Melgosa

I bet the “conscientious objector in the Clone Wars” gag is a Desmond Doss reference… #growingupadventist

Yuki

I didn’t think I needed this but I totally did, thank you 🙌

Andreas Stahl

I actually burst out laughing really loudly when you said "into his avatar body" god that would be amazing.

Isaac Levy

I might have missed someone else mentioning this, but the racist Asian stereotype part during Tombstone was a direct copy of a bit done by Canadian comedian Russell Peters from I believe the late 2000s.

Gussie Ruck

i believe the low german joke is making fun of amish people bc the amish language is sometimes called low german or pennsylvania dutch

Gussie Ruck

also this is making me want to see your thoughts on the starkid productions really badly LMAO

Cassandra

finally being from manitoba pays off. the altona star wars joke is because the town of altona has a high population of german speaking mennonites. and the big laugh is because manitobans will laugh at anything that references something in manitoba. hope this helps.

Francesca White

why did i think this was the patreon exclusive video until the end 😭

Lucy Barton

(whispering) This all feels "holy" inappropriate ;D

Jacob Crowe

Pretty sure the God in the Holy Grail play was literally just stolen from the movie.

flipturn

"lives by the sword, dies by the sword" is a bible quote L O L

Ben Isaac

The Low German thing is a reference to how Martin Luther united the german language after publishing his theses/ bible translation I think?

Jason Fischer

Omg, the prayer for the Avatar themed play sent me!

Svingor Magongo

Hype! Watching as soon as I get back home!!

Poor Richard

I'm a christian, and I don't know that I'll be able to make it through this video. I'm just now getting to the Pirates of the Caribbean parody section, and everything is so cringe that it's making me physically uncomfortable.

cilantro

me, seeing this notification: IT IS FINISHED

Michelle M.

Awesome video! Honestly despite the racist caricatures and certain level of cringe these are really endearing? I’m not a Christian (any longer) but the effort and passion they put into these is kinda sweet. If I was a kid in that church I bet I’d have loved them lol

Count Crackula

From 30 minute previews to a feature length documentary. Christmas in June.

Katie Kraynak

I wonder what Jenny’s Starbucks order is??

Dan Gibbins

Random reactions: -I mean they could have used Belloq as the villain for the Indiana Jones but then they couldn't have included those cutting edge Hogan's Heroes references. But in the name of Zeus and all his wacky nephews why did the youth pastor do the "Yay Jesus" rap IN NAZI COSPLAY, does that not undermine it? -Jenny grew up in a time when endlessly quoting Monty Python was just the thing for nerds, nobody could be blamed for not watching a 90 minute movie where every joke has been endlessly spoiled. Like how I watched Spamalot on Broadway and kept thinking "I know this sketch verbatim, there is nothing in this scene for me." -There was a time when Jenny might have come to enjoy Canadian country legend Stompin' Tom Connors. That time is over. This cover of Bud the Spud ended it. -I could fill an entire comment section with questions and notes about their song choices. Just... so many questions. On nearly all of them.

IndigoRen

Mennonites. Pennsylvania Dutch is a dialect closely related to Pfälzisch, which is a High German dialect. Low German is a set of dialects ranging across northern Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Mennonites are known to speak Plautdietsch, which is an East Low German dialect. Altona, Manitoba is a town founded by Mennonites who spoke Plautdietsch and many Canadian evangelicals have Mennonite family.

IndigoRen

It's not. It's a reference to Mennonites, whose communities sometimes speak a dialect of Low German, which is a set of dialects in northern Germany. He says "the Altona sector" which is a reference to a town founded by Mennonites in Canada. Also Martin Luther did not unite the German language.

The Need To Be Real

I look forward to adding this to my rotation of videos I hear in my vivid dreams as they're playing.

Laura Elizabeth

Saaame. I really wonder how they keep doing it year after year. Don't they get angry emails from people? There's always some of those even for the funny and inoffensive jokes, at least in my experience.

Steven Clark

I absolutely love how annoyed the crucified Tony Stark looks during the lament song. He's just seething.

SoSo_Tsundere

Wow, those Nazis in the Indiana Jones play are Hogan's Heroes references, that's almost as archaic a reference as Jesus.

IndigoRen

As someone who has seen the film Waterloo and looked it up afterward I can feel this.

Dan Gibbins

I mean Thor was just standing right there, he coulda TRIED to help. Also clearly the actor's lips are dry and he just wants to die on the girder-cross so he can grab his chapstick. No, I don't know why that detail jumped out at me but it did.

M Wilson

As a man I can confirm we all have a Kermit voice but not necessarily a Timon voice ready to go.

Ned Jones

just finished watching this and feel like a resurrected Eddie Redmayne from their inevitable fantastic beasts remake. So good!

Markus D

Not gonna lie, I think that Monty Python's Holy Grail is overrated. It's not entirely unfunny, I just think that it's not GREAT. Though Monty Python never quite hit right with me, which is weird because I like a lot of British comedy, just not them.

Mr. Creosote

I'm pretty sick of Monty Python references also.

Penguin Lenin

I really don't understand what they think they're adding or teaching by crucifying random characters. What are you supposed to learn from this? I mean I get that even delusional people want to have fun, but why? Also, it's a little thing but the way the pastor pronounces Somalia as soMAILia is pretty special.

Noah Bergmann

The low german thing is a reference to mennonite culture. Many mennonites came to Canada from Germany/Ukraine in the early 1900's and spoke mostly low german. Descendants of these immigrants make up a strong backbone of the evangelical church in Canada, and it's not uncommon for churchgoers to have a grandparent or two that speaks low german.

IndigoRen

The Low German thing is a combination Canadian joke and religious joke. Altona, Manitoba is a town founded by Plautdietsch (aka Mennonite Low German) speaking Mennonites. Low German refers to a family of dialects in northern Germany and the Netherlands.

IndigoRen

This is why he says "The Altona sector" too, since Altona, Manitoba was a town founded by Mennonites who spoke a dialect of Low German.

SoSo_Tsundere

Regarding Thor: Son of Thunder is a reference to two of Jesus's disciples, James and John. They were called the Sons of Thunder or "Boanerges" because they were kinda loud jerks to a village and Jesus stopped them.

Joe Cumbo

the crucifixion lament lady really is the beyoncé of these productions. the serves. the passion. the gags. she gave it her all for the baby gays watching

Sylvie

Okay, is Thor played by Sokka from Shyamalan's Last Airbender/Jasper from Twilight, or can I just not tell white men apart?

Admiral Clackbar

Jenny: *Puts out a video about embarrassing Canadian church plays.* Me: Oh damn, I hope I'm not in this. Jenny: "Every man secretly has a Kermit the Frog impression just ready to go." Me: Oh damn, I'm in this.

Ben Isaac

I didn’t know the Mennonite thing but saw it in later comments. Martin Luther didn’t singlehandedly unite it or anything but his work kickstarted a bunch of changes to German that led to the modern language

Liz Jones

yeah I thought it was a Mennonite joke too. Here in PA a good number of folks who are Pennsylvania Dutch (confusingly translated since they are actually descendants of German immigrants) are also Mennonite.

Shawn (AKA ShabeRaven)

Thanks to this video I now have about 8 different songs stuck in my head all fighting for supremacy.

S G Matthews

Was… Was I supposed to be working on my Kermit Voice this whole time? Because I always went with more of a Frank Oz direction when I’ve been called upon to do a Muppet Voice…

Lovely

I had to immediately pause the video and check the comments here when Jenny said she had never heard of it. The actual song and the video are totally something that I could imagine Jenny loving xD . (Personally, I was introduced to the song back in the day by it being in Dance Dance Revolution ❤️ .)

run_away

I feel weird asking this, but is Jenny cosplaying as the tradwife meme woman? Sorry for even saying it but I can't not see it...

Cameron Freeman

Some people didn't have Konami partner with their middle school and it really shows.

Thomas Dziura

I knew I recognized that bit from somewhere! I had completely forgotten about it, but kids at my middle school used to say "be a man, do the right thing" in that accent all the time.

Bullseye

Does that song even exist outside of DDR?

IndigoRen

It's not so much that he made it happen, but that he recognized that something approximating Saxon chancery language was already the dialect preferred in courts all across the empire. The shift toward "Early New High German" was already happening much earlier, but was of course influenced by the regional presses.

Bullseye

He says blasphemous stuff in the movie, though. He complains that the Psalms are "depressing", and IIRC he complains about people bothering Him with prayers.

Bullseye

Same, I don't even remember what Timon sounds like.

Oscar Babes

So exciting seeing my name in the credits for the first time 🥰 great work Jenny, another great video!

Bullseye

I think it's supposed to be an Easter dress.

Bullseye

If they're doing Jurassic World, they need to do Raptor Jesus.

David Navas

Jenny I love your vids girl but PLEASE add me to the credits it's the second time I'm not in it I BEGGG

Frankie

THANK YOU for saying you don't like the happy song I thought I was the only one

Natalie Arnold

This church must have beef with Mennonites - first Batman, then Luke. (Altona is a town not far (by Canadian standards) from Winnipeg with a lot of Mennonites living there so all the jokes about it are digs at Mennonites more than at Altona itself)

Mel

Ahhhhh just hit the latest Mennonite joke! Heh. Low German… part of my family comes from that background and there’s a lot of winking in jokes here. This reminds me very much of a church I was taken to for a while as a kid that was started by swedish immigrants and maintained this sort of legacy of that in the form of jokes about lutefisk and some of the holiday stuff. I suspect this church has history/affiliation/heritage they are lovingly teasing about. (PS I’m not Mel I’m Mel spouse 🤷‍♀️)

Albertine Trobridge

Is the easter bonnet on the giant spider real or photoshopped

Cabbage

I know your outfit is meant to be an Easter thing, but it reminds me a lot of the 1993 Secret Garden and that made me smile lol

emchovy

Apparently Altona is a place in Canada, that was founded by Mennonites who spoke Low-German, so. It is Canadian humor.

rylan Laird

I'm going to being praying again so Jenny's wish of Avatar comes true

asunlitrose

Aragog is looking particularly stylish.

Notation

Very interesting phenomenon. It's also interesting to me in light of current events where we see a lot of rhetoric about evangelicals in particular "boycotting" a lot of properties like these. But it's clear most people still consume them, and are familiar with them, anyway.

Luis

I groaned at the Potato Trump but overall the plays did get more better lol. Definitely praying for an Avatar play next year 🙏

Natalie Arnold

ohh is that what it is. i thought it was springtime for hitler or something

Caffeine_unicorn

The Captain Jack song was a song on DDR. I guess the timelines add up that they would know about it.

Alex London

I’m pretty sure that they took the racist Chinese stereotype character (definitely the pastor btw) from Deadwood. Which…seems like a weird choice for an Easter play

Bungerklaus

Amazing video, easily one of your best. Awkward Christian humor is one of my favorite 'so bad its good' watches.

Ino

Weird choice to pluck Sgt. Schultz out of Hogan’s Heroes to join the Nazis in Raiders

Jada S

Now I kind of want to see a vid of Jenny watching the real Holy Grail movie for the first time 🥺

Michael

So, I don't think the racist actor from Tombstone is the pastor. If you see Timon in The Lion King it's the same actor as the Chinese man. They have the same jawline. The pastor's jaw is a little too narrow. I am comparing images from this though so I could be wrong. But I don't think this man has appeared in other performances (oddly enough).

Audrey

I'm sorry but the way they spray-painted a maple leaf over the Captain America star juuuust enough to leave (heh) a couple of the white star legs still visible...omg. Incredible. Captain Canada in all his knock-off glory is fantastic.

Liana Ivy

I've watched this twice already

BZZY93

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Prince

Canadian (and former Church-going thespian: 5-time Judas, 1 time Jesus) here, and this was hilarious! Sadly my friends from Manitoba say this church is suuuper anti-LGBTQ+ :/ (which probably explains why hula-drag Timon's lack of wife and kids is a thing to declare)

Jackson

Im pretty sure that the undertaker is also timon and not the pastor

Joseph Calvin

I always thought of it as my Jordan Peterson voice

Ravelle

I'm having a hard time believing any of this exists and that it takes place in a pocket dimension hellscape.

Shred Cadmium

I guess the pastor does mention during the Tombstone bit that they get "a certain amount of criticism," so ...

Shred Cadmium

I'm actually better at Miss Piggy 🐷 "Hiiiiii-YA!" ... I said I was *better*; I didn't say I was <i>good</i> 😆

Sal

would never have guessed that an evangelical religious organization would be anti-LGBTQ+

Jonas

This might be my favorite Jenny video yet.

Molly

Okay I commented this on YouTube as well, but the Nazis in Indiana Jones are definitely rip-offs of characters from a tv show called Hogan’s Heroes which aired in the 60s, and the only person I know who ever watched it was my dad?!

Jen Canary

It was v big in the pre and early cable years in reruns

Shred Cadmium

Seems to be getting a ton of views! I mean, I'm not exactly sure what's the yardstick, but I remember* Jenny musing that an Evermore video could be a bit niche and might only clock up 300k-500k within a week. <i>The Church Play Cinematic Universe</i> strikes me as if-anything an even smaller niche and we're on course to bust 500k within the first 24 hours 📈 *this is a complete lie ofc i went back & checked 😆

Anna O.

I'm having hilarious flashbacks to church plays I saw as a kid and a teen. There was the one with swing-dancing demons, because swing-dancing was popular with the kids. Then there was the musical about Queen Esther, featuring the best song ever, "Born to Be a Eunuch," which was performed by a very enthusiastic group of teenage boys.

Anna O.

Yeah, but it's probably a reference they had to WWII that their older members would recognize, even if the tone clashes wildly.

Anna O.

Also, I've been kind of in to DC lately so Batman getting crucified on the Bat-Signal was just *chef's kiss*.

Lily

:)

luella

would love to see them do trainspotting. i am dying to know what edits they would make to the lyrics of atomic.

Natalie

I went to a Christian school that had a drama department, but the church would only let us use the chapel/theater if the plays were “ministry”, so we had two original musicals written and performed every year that had painfully on the nose evangelical messaging. Who doesn’t want to watch a 16 year old get fake beheaded for not taking the mark of the beast?!

Raymond Nichols

As a Canadian please accept my insincere apologies for all this.

Vincent Briggs

Can confirm that "Bud the Spud" is a very well known song here in Canada! I don't like it, but it is very famous.

Luis

Always feel guilty seeing my name included at the end of these masterpieces when all I did was donate a few measly dollars while Jenny put in all the hard work. But I'm also extremely honored because I know my name will never be attached to anything as great as these videos :')

David Moscato

I came here to see if anyone else had pointed this out! That sure was a choice.

MacKenzie Chandler Dunnavant

I love the video overall but it did kind of feel weird not even mentioning that this church is explicitly homophobic and transphobic according to their website (which also says they're against racism, go figure) https://www.churchoftherock.ca/about-us/doctrine/. Like, I know it probably goes without saying that an evangelical church is going to be like that, and that at no point did you endorse the church or its views. But it still feels weird potentially giving these people attention and money by spotlighting them without even mentioning "oh by the way, these people suck, don't support them". I'm all for laughing at their corny plays but it feels like an oversight.

Ash Gabrielle

I'm a good few years older than Jenny and a huge Monty Python fan to boot, and I can honestly say that there was nothing more painful to me growing up than the constant Holy Grail quoting among my circle of friends

Dan Gibbins

The XKCD comic did a strip about how the worst thing you could do to honor a troupe built on absurdism is just endlessly quote their material until the absurd becomes mundane. That's basically what happened to Holy Grail.

Chris Talerico

Completely wasted opportunity to not crucify one of those toys. That’s the embodiment of leaving money on the table. I do want them to do Jurassic Park but I want the T-Rex or Blue (cuz they will mix generations of JP movies), to be the one that gets crucified.

Count Crackula

Yeah, no kidding. I've been watching with skepticism because the church's embracing of more secular elements reminded of Bethel Church and their music label Bethel Music, which has adopted a contemporary "aesthetic" as an outreach to younger audiences, while it still preaches against gays and practices some real sketchy shit. The lecture at the end didn't particular sit right either. Like, I wasn't going to shit on these people or "narc them out", as Jenny put it, but if people feel some kind of way about it, you're not going to stop them, and lecturing your audience is just condescending. And even if they did spoil Jenny's fun and got the church to stop its plays, big deal. I would hardly call that "stupid" especially in light of what they're actually preaching. That being said, I don't want this to come off like an indictment. I enjoyed the video. It's like you said, it just feels like an oversight.

Patrick Harris

Jenny! What do they propose doing with a risen savior?! How could you cut the audio right there?! D:

rowanoak

WOW this was fascinating, never would've predicted a video on this but this topic was so entertaining. Thanks as always, Jenny! ALSO: 16:32 with the walking on sunshine jump cut made me laugh so hard i cried

matthew cochran

Doing so would absolutely encourage harassment and "ruin it for everybody" which Jenny heavily discouraged at the end of the video. I don't think making this video is funding homophobia and transphobia in any way either.

Rushka Unverricht

Jenny's "what the heck am I watching?!" expression in the thumbnail keeps cracking me up.  Thanks for another great video Jenny! I'm willing to bet that the CPCU has peaked with this entry lol.

Shred Cadmium

Aye - I don't think many people will watch the video and finish with a better opinion of the organisation than they had coming in. But it will get a lot of views, so there certainly could be some. However, of those, I would guess that there won't be many who'll go on to materially support them in any fashion. But again there could be some. However, of *those*, I imagine that the percentage who might think of providing support, but who would also be dissuaded by a "their views are absolutely awful" disclaimer, would unfortunately be very small indeed ☹️

Steve Ray

If thine YouTube offendeth thee, pluck it out! Jenny's fans are smart and nice and tolerant, and they aren't going to become a Frankenstein mob from watching church plays, even if those plays *haven't* been ritually denounced. Anyone who can't appreciate art from other cultures, for fear of psychic contamination -- like Tipper Gore feared that demons lived on heavy-metal albums -- is a joyless, superstitious Puritan.

Markus D

Agreed. I think she might have gone too light on them. She doesn't have to say "go bully them", just emphasize "Yeah, you see this blatant racism? They're also terrible for OTHER reasons too!"

Markus D

SWING-DANCING!? What year was that,1925!?

Markus D

I think she mostly mentioned that bit so that she could show the racism next to a clip of the pastor basically saying "I don't know why people get mad at us every year, lol".

Markus D

I remember being super disappointed to find that the sword dancing was dancing AROUND swords and not dancing WITH swords.

Markus D

Well, y'see, the kids wouldn't catch on to that because evangelicals aren't ALLOWED to watch normal people media.

Markus D

They're huge bigots, so don't give them too much credit.

Markus D

I think he's got like... a Brooklyn accent?

Markus D

I feel like all the relatively good adaptations stop when Jesus dies (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Last Temptation of Christ). Probably because dying is a lot more emotionally effective than re-spawning.

Michelle M.

Well yes, obviously, considering they’re a massive evangelical church. That’s why I and I assume everyone who watched this video would never attend their church, support them monetarily, or try to promote them and their beliefs in any capacity. Occasionally even shitty people with bigoted beliefs create something that’s amusing/entertaining/enjoyable in some ways.

Anna O.

Dude, did you somehow sleep through the swing-dance revival of the late nineties and early 2000s?

Lauren

the low german joke is a reference to amish and mennonites. they make a few mennonite jokes throughout

Renah K.

Church of the Rock when their crucifixion play features Norse gods: This is good Church of the Rock when Habitat for Humanity rents their venue and Indigenous children try to do a traditional dance (on THEIR OWN traditional land): this is wholly incongruent with our Christian values!

Count Crackula

Well, the issue isn't the " fear of psychic contamination", or any other silly straw man, but promoting of groups that preach objectionable values. While you can certainly separate the art from artist, that concept becomes a lot more muddy when that art is meant to specifically draw in more attention to the preaching of problematic concepts. Though, I mean, in the end, who cares? It is after all a silly play by some dorks in Canada. It's really not that serious. But the criticism wasn't that serious either: pointing out that a creator -should- at least draw -some- attention to their subject's objectionable views, especially if you're inviting an audience to join in their seemingly harmless fun, is hardly a big ask. And pointing this out doesn't make you a buzzkill or "joyless superstitious Puritan".

Shred Cadmium

This is a nightmare: I've watched it too many times now and that first rendition of <i>I'll Be There</i> where it sounds like someone trying to strangle Donald Duck is stuck looping in my head 😆 halp

Z The Cat

I guess I feel like that just isn't necessary. She was neither promoting, nor criticizing the church and the people, unless it was directly relevant to what she was talking about (their performances). It's not like she chose to talk about other aspects of the church, and happened to leave out their homophobic views. The only things we directly learned about the church from this video is that they do easter performances, they're located in Canada, and the pastor just CAN'T understand how people always find something to criticize every year. Jenny clearly did not intend for us to form an educated opinion about the church from this video. That wasn't the point. If someone wants to support the church after watching this video, it's up to them to look into their views.

.

another vid to hold us over until barbie 😭

Sarah Carter

I’ve watched it four times already

Samantha Ansley

This was amazing and joyful and wholesome. Love your storytelling. Motivated me to join your Patreon.

David A Behlman

That mash-up is legit good and I need more of it.

Eric Houge

That awkward energy when a pop culture character's crucifixion is funnier than any of the actual jokes in the play but you can't laugh because it would be blasphemous...

Rish Outfield

The existence of God is debatable either way, but after watching this, there is no doubt in my mind that the Devil exists.

Doggus

Claiming you’re not racist but having those stereotypes comes right before complaining about “cancel culture” and people today not getting the joke.

Thread Bomb

And Evermore and Beany babies

Thread Bomb

Horrified expression plus cottage core outfit = excellent

Thread Bomb

As soon as I saw the basket hilts on those swords, I knew the dance was Scottish, not Irish. Does a trad Irish sword dance even exist?

Thread Bomb

They seem too self-aware for a Jenny take-down.

Thread Bomb

Tends to be overlooked by "Christian" gun nuts.

Thread Bomb

We can see the same thing on Youtube now, with people endlessly quoting old catchphrases in the comments (see RedLetterMedia, Ryan George, Mr Sunday Movies). I'm so glad Jenny has managed to avoid this phenomenon on her channel. But it's a shame Jenny was spoiled for Monty Python. The movies are actually quite charming.

Thread Bomb

I wouldn't necessarily even call it a Kermit voice. There are a few different things that can be done with the voice (e.g. the Cookie Monster/death metal voice, the croaky old person voice), and one of them happens to sound like Kermit. BTW, some may remember the classic late '60s song "On the road again" by Canned Heat - the singer sounds almost exactly like Kermit the Frog.

Thread Bomb

I thought it was cottagecore.

Thread Bomb

I think that artistic unity is a concept the creators of these plays are unaware of.

Thread Bomb

Are you at the Bad Car level of payment? Jenny had to cut down credits to include only top tier patrons, because the total number of patrons is ridiculous and not practical to include in the credits.

Thread Bomb

Life of Brian might be better

Thread Bomb

It was on TV a lot in the 80s and probably into the 90s.

Was "Born to be a eunuch" a cover of the disco song "Born to be alive"?

Jada S

You know what…I agree

David Navas

You know what, that makes complete sense and I have been proven a FOOL

One criticism in this video that's a bit odd is the way that any song, movie or meme that was over a year old at the time the play was performed is seen as a bafflingly irrelevant inclusion - unless it's something Jenny likes.

So, a friend of mine used to live in Winnipeg, and knows people who went/go to this church. To the point of being background performers in some of the Easter plays (probably nothing past Robin of the Hood). Turns out the Choir Director lady, who I have come to think of as Choir Director Thea (because she stole that lady's job), is a professional theatre actress in Winnipeg. So I guess she goes to that church, and one year they asked her to be their ringer, and she decided she was fine taking a week to do a little skit and belt some Adele songs while movie characters are crucified behind her. My friend reported zero drama about Choir Director Thea's predecessor, and I definitely asked, I was powerfully curious about what happened there. Anyway no wonder she's Jenny's favourite, she does this for a living.

Holy shit, he does look and sound a lot like Jay Rathbone. Don’t think it’s him, though. Although I wouldn’t totally put it past him…

Daisy Frabell

Ok, I felt mean. Definitely not him. I got a little disillusioned with several of the 100 monkeys boys after the one I was closest to told me he voted for trump! They had a cute little following back in the day: very female, very queer, very charitable. I hardly knew Jay, though!

I don't think she was ever truly "baffled", she just made commentary on them being dated, and then her opinion on that dated thing. It's something relevant to bring up when you're looking at media from 10-15 years ago, if you're not googling with each new stage, it would be hard to know that at the time of creation, the reference was ALREADY old, and just assume "they were doing what was popular then." Like no, gangnam style already had its hay day years before they did the dance.

GrubTheSlug

Think through how that would look. How would that appear in her video? She would have to give a source for it. How would she give a source? Showing the webpage. She would have to show herself going to their webpage and reading it out loud. A rookie mistake when dealing with kids is to say something like "whatever you do, DO NOT stand on the table!" and that shoots yourself in the foot because you just put the idea of standing on the table in their head. The same goes when you're dealing with an audience the size of Jenny's. She could SAY 100000 times NOT to go to these people and bully them, but if she SHOWED a visual demonstration of her seeking them out by name, scrolling through their site, she WOULD increase the traffic there, which would be a pretty immediate pipeline to emails/calls/etc. there's no way she could've casually dropped this without siccing a mob on this church.

I watched this shortly after it came out, and then as I was listening to a podcast (that I'm behind on) the next day, they joke about a Shrek themed Easter musical (I hope this comes to be), and in the next episode someone mentions these very church musicals and they even played the sound clip if Iron Man's crucifixion. Weird but also great timing for me.

aislynntheturtle

As a baby that took a lot of naps at that time, I for one, did largely sleep through it.

this was so wild! kinda nice to laugh at after all my childhood church trauma lmao probably one of my fav videos so far!

violet

A bad "Hamilton" church play from Texas just hit social media. Jenny, thank you for making this video so I look like an expert on weird pop culture church plays in front of my friends.

Becca Yaga

My friend sent me the public link to this video in early August and, after watching everything else on your channel, you've become the one and only Patreon I subscribe to. I love your work!

Rewatched this and I have a new conspiracy theory about the Tombstone one: they wanted to do the horsey dance move from Gangnam Style and the western setting was all spun out from that.
