Oh I'm excited for this one!

Good one. Never thought I would be glad to know the roots of CNC.

Thanks for it. didn't knew the roots of it. I know that something between the fully-manual and NC operated machines exist. Automated machining tools where the "program" is a block of steel with channels all around it and you can place nuts and screws into them. These screws are somehow "read" (mechanically touched) while the machine operates. You can release and move the screws and this changes then the sizes/shape of the manufactured part. One job of an experienced machinist was to know which screw to hit with a small hammer when the manufactured part gets close to the allowed tolerances to avoid bad parts. (I saw this live in operation on a shop floor in 1999)

Jon. Our family friends are deeply connected to Fanuc. Shrikrishna Kulkarni the first Indian to graduate from School of Electrical Engineering at University of Tokyo, was sent to India by Inaba-San as CEO. His sister, Sonali, is the current CEO. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Inaba when he first visited Bangalore 20+ years ago.
