Before he was ever a Supreme Court justice, Lewis Powell was an enterprising corporate attorney representing tobacco companies and calling on CEO’s to get off their asses and flood American politics with money.

It is so funny to hear them call it "the intrusion of corporations in American politics" but really we are so far gone that every time we bring up public funding, labor rights, ability to sue etc. Corporations and american political institutions treat citizens as if WE are the ones intruding.

I would love to watch Rhiannon's Supreme Court confirmation hearing lol

I’ve never been more sad learning my city ward. 5🙃

Something so wild is going on with Rhiannon's mic today

SCJ Rhiannon, yes! We don’t have the money on the left but we have the people who will donate time and energy. Please keep highlighting opportunities for action. With parasocial love and solidarity ✊💕

Ben Schwabe

Loving the new mic and SCOTUS nomination for Rhiannon.

To hear conservatives tell it, governments were invented by haters in order to stifle the natural dynamism and essential benevolence of the Business Community

Really interested in next week's episode because it affects my industry, though I'm on the drinking water side. I've only slightly read about it, and while some of the arguments from San Francisco seem to make sense, it's overall a stinker. Definitely looking forward to a deep dive.

I’m thinking white shoes like the kind that Clive Owen wore in the Knick, but that might be a decade too soon for derby shoes

I appreciate y’all doing these types of episodes (the federalist society ones too!) bc it really helps get my head around the “how the hell did we get here” questions.

RHI- Sounds great but you need a pop filter or a sound gate for high tones

Wow—I saw y’all do a panel at UofM today, and a lot of what you discussed there (the need for the left to create a vision of power and change and act on it, make new systems and paradigms, much like the right did after the Civil Rights Movement) is echoed here.

(retired professional audio engineer here) it's a lovely sound, but on the recessive or "mellow" side. This makes the three recorded voices unequal in their degree of "presence" or "projection". There's also some cognitive dissonance between Rhi's rhetorical tone and the timbre of her voice. Some of that must be, as Rhi said, because she was a little sick, but some of it is the choice of microphone and the room acoustics; also possibly some settings on whatever equipment (interfaces, computers or other sound recording devices) you're using. I'd be glad to speak or email with your technical or audio person any time.

Actually some govt jurisdictions do in part or in full fund local chambers' of commerce like in Chicago

Please invite Mehrsa Baradaran as a guest. Her books on the topic of people like Powell are amazing.

I for one liked Rhiannon’s new setup!

You'll never catch me watching an awards show but I will absolutely listen to y'all talk trash about em

Having graduated from Harvard College and Harvard law school and working for what would be described as a white shoe law firm on Wall Street years ago, I can add some additional information. A white shoe firm, as you described it, was populated by Ivy League graduates who were WASPs with a few representatives of other religions.. The white shoes were known as “white bucs” made of buckskin, As I recall, they generally had red or pink soles and had to be carefully attended to because they could not be polished and stained easily. No one would would have worn white bucs to work. They were favored as weekend attire. As my memory serves me.
