Hot take: objectification is not necessarily beyond rehabilitation. It comes with big problems, for sure. It can be used as a tool to reinforce toxic power dynamics and inherently elides the elements of individual subjectivity and agency that allow us to express basic and necessary respect for one another. However, some people enjoy being objects on their own terms, and pretty much everyone enjoys thinking about their fellow humans in a shallow, sexy way from time to time. We need to work out how we can objectify one another from time to time without denying anyone their rights as a subject.
