Why can Willem sense these things? He is half-elvish and his intuition grows stronger each day as his hair is no longer being shaved off. The longer it gets, the more connected to his surroundings he becomes. He doesn't see the connection yet, and can't explain why he knows. He assumes that he just notices more things than others do. Elvish hair, as my research proved, is more than just hair. Cutting their hair can be a form of punishment. Arn did not cut his hair as punishment. He did so to protect Willem. Arn may not have known the effects of cutting off Willems' hair. Because Willem did not grow up surrounded by elves, he doesn't know what powers he possesses. The closer he draws near to his brother, the more he might understand.
