for a moment, imagine you're in the woods in one of the last days of summer. how warm is the air? what does it smell like? is there a breeze? what do you hear? are you standing up or sitting down, and what is the ground underneath you like? what feelings does it prompt in you?

when I imagine, it, it smells like soft earth, moss, and evergreen trees. streams trickle past, reinvigorated from the most recent soft rain that marked the end of summer. birds are busy, getting ready for fall, maple leaves rustle in the cool breeze, and the light is a constantly shifting dapple on the mossy ground. there might even be squirrels chasing each other around trees, or a meandering deer or two.

the end of summer has always marked the beginning of a season of anticipation for me. here I am now at the end of that season, my cravings for winter about to be sated. like the animals stocking up for snow and or getting ready to move, I find myself doing the same as ski season approaches.

so for me, that summer afternoon is sweet, bitter, and sweet again. sweet in the joy of the moment, bitter in the ending of a beautiful season, and sweet again as I look forward to fall's rush into winter.
