This one is a part of a huge collaboration of EduTubers (mostly HistoryTubers, with a few Science channels sprinkled in) called #projectMAD. All of the videos in the playlist are about something related to The Cold War. Here's the playlist so far: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjnwpaclU4wXW18I7joPDPXmfL1zepBNv

Exciting news! I am going to Washington, D.C. with recently graduated students next week. We were supposed to go on this trip last year, but it got postponed due to....ya know.

Anyway, I have embarrassingly only been once, and that was 21 years ago, so heck yeah this is gonna be awesome. I am planning to turn my adventures there into my first YouTube #shorts video, and I'll probably sucker one of my former students into filming me for it. Wish me luck. Oh, and that will take the place of a regular video next week.

Thank you for your continued support!!

The Iran-Contra Affair was probably the most serious scandal of the Reagan presidency, and hurt his legacy, especially regarding his foreign policy. To this day, many contend that he knew more than he actually said he did. Still, Reagan remained a popular President in his final days in office. Once upon a time, a dude named Ronald Reagan was an American President. When he first took office, he was pretty passionate about fighting Communism, with a capital C. In particular, the Soviet Union. Even though the Cold War had been going on for 36 years, tensions were still high between the two countries. It’s safe to say that Reagan escalated those tensions during his first years in office. Specifically, Reagan had two ongoing Cold War problems he had to deal with. One, the spread of Communism in Latin America. And two, extremists in the Middle East who kept taking American hostages. During the first hours of his Presidency, Iran released 52 Americans who had been held hostage for more than a year. Militants first kidnapped them after invading the American embassy in Tehran. In the aftermath of what became known as the Iran Hostage Crisis, relations between the United States and Iran remained hostile. #apush #ushistory

I’ve always wanted to learn about this stuff but never got round to it. I also have been talking with people about Reagan, I tend to rank him highly amongst presidents because of his charisma, but I’d like to learn more about the shady parts of his presidency

Christopher Lea

If this video had been posted in 2016, I would’ve gotten an extra point on my APUSH exam

Raquell Jones

Godspeed on the trip!!! My last trip there was also 21 years ago

Matt Beat

Daaang. I didn't even know the AP tested stuff from that late in the game, so to speak.

Ralph W. Kelly

Finished watching it, great video as always

Waterfort

If you see Reagan with Laser Eyes. Run

Matt Beat

Exactly! And he could be hiding behind any planet. (according to this video 😄)

Naterade

Awesome video per usual! It seems like Reagan knew more than he let on.. It is interesting that back then it was harder to spin a story without social media, the internet, cable tv news and

Naterade

What not. Our democracy was better off for it. The infinite amount of misinformation out there is getting scary and very dangerous.

Naterade

Have fun in DC! I went there when I was 17 on a family trip. I didn’t appreciate it like I would now. I need to go back!

Devin Canada

You Stole DORAS MAP HOW COULD YOU!!!!!

Devin Canada

Ive been to Nicaragua to this day your not allowed to talk about the Contra and Sandinistas. because you could be at a table with two people who fought on both sides and no one wants the memory brought up to avoid conflict. In Nicaragua the Unions have a iron grip on the countrys as well as the socialist party it keeps the nation crippled economically. Daniel Ortega is truely a dictator over the nation finding ways to alter their constitution to keep himself in power. It is not all bad though the food was good, people were over all nice. and the weather was wonderful.

Matt Beat

Yeah Ortega is a horrible leader there now IMHO. That's really cool that you got to spend some time there!

Grant Hughes

Have fun in DC Mr. Beat! I live in the city, I'm sure you have a packed schedule with your students, but if you want drinks or a bite to eat, it's on me!

Ganim Howard

I vividly remember all of this as a teenager. I watched Ollie North’s testimony on TV. Even had an Ollie for President tshirt (because I was dumb as a kid).

Matt Beat

Well I owe you a high five. Our itinerary is fairly rigid, but I still think it might be possible to meet up. I will message you!

Mayor of Ohio

thing that bothers me about iran contra is that it's portrayed as the worst thing reagan did, same thing with watergate for nixon. i'm not even sure iran-contra is in the top 5 of the worst things reagan has done. besides, turning down complete denuclearization with gorbachev eclipses everything else.

Mayor of Ohio

anyway, great video as always mr beat

Andrew Ault

OLLIE NORTH! OOOOLLLIE NORTH!

Matt Beat

Personally, I think the two worst things Reagan did was expand the War on Drugs and continue to topple foreign leaders who were democratically elected in other countries.
