I get saltier than I've ever been in a video.

It's not that I don't understand WHY we have the Electoral College, it's that the WHY is no longer relevant.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Thank you for your continued support.

I've heard your so-called "best" arguments to keep the Electoral College for four years, and all of them are weak and pathetic. Sorry, the Electoral College still sucks. Get rid of it or reform it. They think it’s great. They like ordinary people like you and me having power and having a voice. THEY want to be heard. I’ve heard your arguments to keep the Electoral College for four years now. But every single one of your arguments are so weak and predictable that they’re kind of boring at this point. It’s not that I don’t understand how presidential elections were supposed to go. It's that how they were supposed to go sucks and needs to change. Again, no, this doesn’t mean I want a DIRECT democracy. I want a true REPRESENTATIVE democracy.

Dude o get soo mad when people (aka my dumb friends) say “the EC prevents NY and Cali from controlling the electorate. It drives me nuts the excuses and reasonings people make for it.

Charlie Murphy

That was cathartic Mr Beat, thank you. I would love to rail on some of my dumb comments but I don't think I ever will. You hit the nail on the head with how dumb the "EC prevents NY and Cali from controlling the electorate" nonsense. Like you said, it's like they don't realize the states wouldn't matter anymore. It's hard to not see the arguments for the EC as anything but smoke screens for political opportunism

Matt Beat

And they're almost always post hoc talking points. Their mind is made up about the EC and they search for evidence to back up its value because, and let's be candid here, they are likely tend to dig Republican presidential candidates.

Matt Beat

Thank you Charlie. Yeah it's just another tired talking point basically. It does get old!

Ralph W. Kelly

The saddest part is that I support keeping the electoral college not for political reasons, I hate it for the same reasons you do, but simply because it adds a lot of suspense to presidential elections. Obviously that’s not how it should be, politics should be civil, but making electoral college predictions is generally one of my favourite pastimes around election seasons. Though if it came down to it I’d take my preferences aside and support removing it lol

Matt I deliberately didn’t watch your 1st video because I dislike disagreeing with you. But since you raised it again - here goes. Your basic argument is with the US Senate. It is the 2 senators per state which give rise to the electoral college inequality. The fact that voters in Vermont and Wyoming have more say in laws than voters in Texas or California is due entirely to the 2 senators per state. Your argument against the electoral college is really an argument against the US Senate. Furthermore the Senate is a reflection of the fact that this country is made up of 50 equal states, i.e. states that are equal regardless of their population. Thus I take your argument against the EC to be really against the Senate which is really an argument against 50 equal states. Either accept equal states with unequal population or advocate for the abolishment of states. There is however the pesky name of our country to consider.

Matt Beat

In theory, I am against the Senate existing as well. I think we should have a unicameral Congress like Nebraska has. However, I am willing to compromise, and thus am cool with keeping the Senate as long as other reforms are made to make our federal government more representative. Did you watch my Add These Amendments video per chance?

Naterade

Great follow up to your 1st video on the electoral college. I have never been a fan of the electoral college for the various reasons you stated in your videos. The 2000 and 2016 elections are great examples of why it needs to be abolished if not seriously reformed. I live in Missouri and feel like my vote is wasted at the presidential level. Bordering Illinois residents I am sure feel the same. I would be in favor of the ‘congressional district split’allocation that Maine and Nebraska utilize, but gerrymandering complicates that..

Matt Beat

Gerrymandering complicates that indeed, but it's still a step in the right direction. Thanks for the kind words! I forgot you were in Missouri.

Naterade

Yes, I agree. It would be a vast improvement over the status quo. Swing states get all the love and influence. Great for those who live in those states, not so great for everyone else.

Alex Gorell

They are the same people who also hate ranked choice voting. They hate fair representation.

DANTE VERONA

Republicans have lost the last 7 of 8 popular votes for President; yet they have 6 of 9 Supreme Court justices. So what do we get? Minority rule along with emerging Christian nationalism. This just re-inforces my pessimism... The demographics are circling the drain for the Republican party but the wait is just excruciating.

Matt Beat

Dang, more of us should think of it that way. I should have brought up this point in the video.

DANTE VERONA

Well you did mention minority rule.... Great work again, Mr. Beat. Always dig it.

Devin Canada

I see the Electorial college as a protection against the stupidity of majority rule. if we get rid of that, how about we cahange it to were each state gets a sing vote representing the popular vote of their state, and the popular vote used as a tie braker if it ends up 25/25. (srlsy)

Michael Burt

What concerns EC supporters is not that New York and California, the states, would have more influence over the presidential election outcome than the states Kansas and West Virginia in a popular vote election. What they want is for Kansan and West Virginian voters, i.e., Republicans, to count more than Californian and New Yorker votes, i.e., Democrats. It's a messed up system. More conservative Californians would be inspired to vote in the presidential election if they knew winning their state was not a lost cause because winning the state would be irrelevant, but their individual vote would have direct impact. Same principle in every state. EC supporters are currently telling conservative Californians, "Your vote does not matter because we can't win your state."

Devin Canada

For the most part i love watching videos were you disagree with me. useally your very polite. here i could tell though you were a bit irritated and had a gut feeling that making a second video may potentially be motivated that way. You had two critiques that were worth addressing though one came off a bit snide. So the snide one first that people are stuck in 1780 who defend the electoral college. you stated we should accept that the federal branch has more power, this sounded like to me that you want us to go with the flow, accept our fate. you also stated that borders have a lot less differences now. the first part goes against what i know of you so the way it came off to me must be wrong, i for one do not like how much power the federal government has now and think that that 1780 thought is much better. Then again if i was transplanted to 1787 i would be for The New Jersey Plan. and your video solidified me in that view accidently. your second point that borders dont necessarily mean differences, i really wonder if that matters all that much, were the 13 states so different when William Paterson? it makes me question my own arguments for the electoral college as well though as ive argued the different thoughts point before, of course im also thinking in a matter that if the popular vote came to be the east and west coast would control my life with the lone star of Texas being my buckler against the evil coast dwellers... (i hoped you laughed there.) My motive is that each state should be the core authority and so should have equal say regardless of population. and i do feel safer with the idea that Rural states like Montana and Wyoming have stronger voices in the current system then in one were the whole population rules. But my views have changed somewhat from this video. i now believe the New Jersey plan had the right idea beyond representation. i now believe in federal elections each state should get one vote each with popular vote being a tie braker. like i said in another comment. also each state election for governor should be with each county having a vote each. If you read this then thank you, now im going into Delorian and returning to 1787 to enjoy my ideals in peace in hopes that that jerk Edmund Randolph wont screw my life up.

Matt Beat

Fair enough lol I appreciate your sincerity. Oh and Edmund Randolph was indeed a jerk
