After several delays, I am so excited to finally be releasing this one. It's been a long time coming. I put off making it for awhile initially since I was so worried about getting it correct. Overall, I'm proud of how it turned out.

But what do YOU think? Is that truly true? Is the truthiness of this video truthy enough for truth tellers everywhere? Let me know. :)

And also, thank you for your continued support!

I recently served on a jury, and I was amazed at how we worked together to attempt to critically think to find the truth with the limited evidence we had. In deliberations, we relied HEAVILY on corroboration since we mostly just had witness testimonies to go off of. We also heard testimony from experts who listed their credentials-experts who had different conclusions about the same evidence. Yeah my brain got a lot of exercise that week. But even trials have lots of manipulation. Lawyers, in particular, are EXTREMELY skilled at manipulating juries. Heck, even some witnesses are good at manipulating us. It can be tough in the courtroom not to let our emotions get in the way of only looking at the evidence. But hey, just as much as we are logical creatures, we’re also emotional creatures. In fact, when it comes to emotional issues that tap into our values, beliefs, and identity, we often ditch logic and confirmation bias takes over. Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that confirms or supports our prior values, beliefs or identity. In fact, when we encounter information that goes AGAINST our values, beliefs, or identity, it hurts. That pain we feel when this happens is called cognitive dissonance. Brain scans even show that the part of our brains that is activated during a physical threat is the same part activated when someone attacks our values, beliefs, or identity. Finding out if something is true or not is a process. A constant process that will continue for the rest of your life. And it’s a painful process. Critical thinking actually kinda hurts, but, as with most things, the more we practice it the easier it gets. Heck, you may already be good at it, you just never realized it. It’s best to think of knowledge existing on a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum is absolute certainty. On the other end is complete cluelessness. Almost all truth is in between. We like to think something is true or false. But almost always it’s somewhere in between.

I'm famous! No, but really, this was good stuff, as always. This is a great example of why I contribute, however modestly, to your channel.

Ha! I was waiting for the word, epistemology to appear and then you mentioned it during the end credits! Very well done, Mr. Beat! Aside from the honest, "I don't know" answer; sometimes I will also say, "we don't have enough information yet." Dig it.

I am one of 8 billion who claims to do my best to look at sources evenly and try to escape bias, before immediately going “well of course there are exceptions, mostly things I don’t like” *sigh* humans…

Matt Beat

"we don't have enough information yet" is also a great response because it gives us something to aim for. Glad you dug this one!

Matt Beat

You're well ahead of me when I was your age, I gotta say. I was kind of close-minded back then.

Great video by the way. Worthy successor to your ‘believing bullcrap’ video on Beat Goes On

Devin Canada

The Dictionary lately has stopped using the definitions that the majority of people use.

Devin Canada

Cureency is reversed when studying history. you would expect Pat Garrett to know about Billy the Kid more accuratly then someone today.

Devin Canada

Can you explain cognitive dissonance more? Ive heard it used by my Therapist use it in a way that means "to do something apposed to your values."

Matt Beat

Yeah, it basically just means any time we are out of our comfort zone when we face values, beliefs, or an identity that is different than our own. It's a big reason why we have such polarization today, because people don't like to feel cognitive dissonance, so they dig their heels in deeper and cling onto a tribe even more.

Devin Canada

websters. like ive never heard the defenation of truth used the way its defined. useally i hear people use it to mean a fact that exist despite what you accept as real or not.
