Parasocial relationships are something I've been thinking a lot about lately, especially after beginning my 10 Questions podcast. So....uh....yeah. This one got meta. I apologize if it made any of you feel weird. I must stay, it has been great getting to know you on here, though. 

It might have been self-sabatoge to release this the more I think about it.

Now, when I typically do meet viewers of my videos, it’s freaking awesome. My viewers tend to be interesting people, let me tell you. However, it’s just not possible for me to meet you all. What I just gave an example of is a parasocial relationship. A parasocial relationship is an imaginary friendship with a public figure.

Very interesting watch! What a lot of people also don't realise is that at the end of the day content creators, celebrities or whoever else are just people like anybody else. Just because they have a following doesn't mean they are any less or more than you or I. Realising that can really help in avoiding paradoxical relationships or at the very least avoid most of the negative aspects that you highlighted in my opinion.

LOL well if you are persistent enough, I suppose you can break through any parasocial relationship to make it a "regular" relationship. Then again, it could also lead to a restraining order, so there is a fine line. It's been great getting to know you. You're a cool human. :)

Hey Matt, Good video topic and who would be better than a creator with first hand experience to "create" it. :-) I think it's easy to confuse a parasocial relationship with a "friend", especially when you are younger. I do feel like I know you, though it isn't the same as a close friend, more like one of my school teachers that I really liked. I've learned so much from your videos over the last few years. And I respect you and your efforts to teach and entertain. I feel good about supporting your channel. I have actually met 3 other creators a few years ago, one in the UK and 2 in Japan. Meeting you a couple of years ago only confirmed my idea of you and what you are about. I'm a patron to you and one other channel, "ocean conservation Namibia" for about the same length of time. (Ha! Now you know more about me.) BTW I think you are at least "G" list! :-)

A few years ago, before Spotify, I used to listen to Joe Rogan a lot, too. Almost every video. But now I still watch him if there is a subject or person he is interviewing that I am interested in. In the world of YouTube I believe you grow and change. That's the advantage of a parasocial relationship, it can be temporary. It's easier to break up with "Joe Rogan" than if it were a real relationship!

Because I can relate. Even now, I'm writing to someone I only know through his work on YouTube. But it hit me in a good way, because it encourages me to look at what I say and do online.

I did feel a little self conscious watching this one, wondering if I engage in a weird way. How dare you make me think! :-) But this was very, very interesting. It made me wonder if I got more and more into YouTube content starting in 2020 when the world shutting down coincided with my family moving to a new town, where we barely knew other people. New real life relationships in a new place developed more slowly because of COVID, so I wonder if I got caught in parasocial relationships. Anyone else here relate to that?

I literally have already got comments from people who experienced that! I think the simple lesson is to be aware of parasocial relationships so that we balance them with real-life relationships. On another note, it's been great getting to know you on the Web. :)

Interesting topic! I think parasocial relationships are like alcohol, good in moderation and can be fun, but can be dangerous to your (mental)health if there’s too much consumption. I enjoy your content and appreciate how interactive you are with your viewers. I enjoyed getting to meet you a while back via zoom. Based on that experience and your content, you seem like a genuine, honest and nice person.

Lately ive been trying to build more relationships with my town and community by becomeing more involved. the people i see there are useally much older but i enjoy it because i feel more fullfilled then lets say playing D&D with someone i never met before online.
