Here's the last Mermay post !

I didn't know where I was going with this one, but I had fun. I wish I did the waves more orange instead of pink, but oh well ! I'll edit it if I make prints of this illustration !

✨ S T E P  1

As usual, I did the first sketch on my iPad (very convenient for thumbnails and picking the perfect color palette in advance !). I used my light table to draw it on paper. This time I tried to paint my Mermay on Canson XL watercolor paper and I love it !

First layer of ink on the mermaid's skin (a mix of cyan blue and yellow by Colorex) and I added masking fluid so the details in her hair and the flower stay white.

I mixed magenta, yellow & red bordeaux ink to have this orange/red color and filled the circle behind the mermaid.

Layer of markers ! 

Skin : Pastel Blue / Promarker

Sun : Salmon Pink / Copic Ciao

Hair : Abyss Green / Copic Ciao

I erased the masking fluid and this is how it looked like ! Then I added some white gouache to make the pearls look whiter and rounder.

I outlined the mermaid with brown ink (I mixed bordeaux red and burnt sienna).

I thought the illustration looked incomplete, so I added some waves in the background, using white gouache and red ink that I mixed so the waves' color don't look too off - unfortunately it didn't turn out like I wanted (I thought it would look more orange since I added some yellow in the red ink but like I said, I will probably change it in Photoshop if I ever make prints !).
