Tusks. (Patreon)

Usually made from mother of pearl, the septum tusk was a regular staple in the early days of the modern piercing community. Particularly popular with atavists/Modern Primitives like Viking Navaro, who Fakir Musafar once described as - "an ATAVIST, that is throwback to a more primitive state- perhaps even another, physically stronger existence. Anyone who doesn't accept the "re-embodiement principal" (reincarnation) would find it impossible to reconcile the two "N"s. The same is true of about half a dozen other Modern Primitives I know, including Musafar himself!"
This photo, from the early 1980s, features Viking Navaro and Jim Ward (Gauntlet, PFIQ) on the back row and Sailor Sid Diller and a gentleman named George (who worked for Gauntlet) on the bottom row.
By the 1990s, tusks were mostly made of stainless steel or niobium- in ether single pieces (sold as spikes or curved spikes) or threaded two part tusks, but they'd eventually fall out fo favor in place of more boutique options like smaller segment rings and jeweled clickers.
