Seeing tattooing being performed used to require you to actively seek it out; without mediocre rockstars hosting tattoo gameshows on basic cable your options were usually sending money orders to Royboy, Charles Gatewood, or Metamorphosis II Productions' Michael O. Stearns- who, for my money(order)- produced the best of the late 1980s/early 1990s tattoo documentaries.

Based in the Bay Area, and a client and friend of Ed Hardy's, Stearns had access to some of the best tattooers that generation had to offer, shooting films in SF, San Jose, Oakland, and later Philly, and Amsterdam.

The tapes different in content- some sit down interviews, other free form convention documentation, but regardless of the narrative were great time capsules of a tattoo community that doesn't exist anymore.

Philly Gets Inked was filmed at the 1990 Philadelphia Convention (which may have been in New Jersey?) and features Jack Yount, Guy Aitchison, Joe "Inkpad" Bailey, Bernie Luther, Jack Rudy, and more.

Stearns' films never made the jump to digital and are being offered for archival purposes.
