Tattooing was officially illegal in NYC from 1961-1996; after the ban was lifted there's an argument to be made that things got worse, with self regulation being replaced by tattooing and body piercing at sketchy sunglass booths in St. Mark's place and shops popping up that offered nothing save for the probability of a bad tattoo.

Still, legalization did allow for the NYC Tattoo Convention, held at the Roseland Ballroom, that for me represent the last of the glory days of tattoo conventions being for tattooed people.

I shot this 35mm portrait of Muffe Valnuz at the 2001 Roseland show.
