Hi everybody,In my ongoing efforts to deliver exceptional and immersive tracks, I have recently spent some time exploring the 3D trees system, a fairly new feature within the Custom Shaders Patch and Content Manager. Download belowhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1cPNY_jU-1BuswD8YNiMZvV1QWhyQSWlG/view?usp=sharing

To better understand its potential, I have designed a track that exclusively incorporates 3D trees, featuring 830 of them. I am eager to gather your thoughts on this. How does the track perform in terms of responsiveness and visual appeal on your setup? Your feedback is instrumental in determining whether TreeFX should be integrated into future projects and / or retrofitted into existing ones. Alternatively, I can assess if it is not yet suitable for use or too demanding on your systems.

The new track in is situated in the picturesque Lannemezan region of France, near the Spanish border. While the layout is relatively straightforward, it does feature some off-camber corners with intriguing entry points. Currently in its early stages of development, this track primarily serves as a testbed for the 3D trees. However, if it garners positive feedback, I will consider refining and expanding upon it.Ancienne Carriere is French for Old Quarry - just if you were wondering!

As always, your unwavering support is massively appreciated!

Yeah, I feel that it might be too much for now? Especially if people want to use VR. In theory it's a great idea. But in practice it doesn't seem to be performing as well as I'd hoped.

This looks incredible mate! I think TreeFX would be a great fit to any early 60's / 70's tracks. The 2D models from the base game can sometimes kill the vibe when it comes to blasting through the woodland at the old Hockenheim for example. This would really add the sense of danger back into that era's tracks! Can't wait to see this implemented into future projects! :D

It's a nice thing to add but it's not enough optimitzed, I mean in general terms, not only on this test track. I run a high end system and get some small frame drops at 4K resolution onboard camera, it overkills when switching to the only track cam included. It will be worse on VR (can test it later this week as I'm really busy) I mean, every 3d trees track I've tested has small frame drops somewhere on a high end system, if I go 1440p I'm sure it won't drop but native resolution for me is 4k so when playing 1440p I don't like the way it gets scaled on my monitor, so... It's an interesting thing but it kicks hard when you're pushing quality and performance, I don't know if there's room for improving performance from Ilija or from you modders, but every new 3d trees track I test the more "I don't needed this for the cost in performance" feeling grows in me. I'll try to do more testing with lower resolutions and VR as well and will be glad to report

looking awesome dude..but i also have to say that there is a little performance impact but not to heavy. Maybe a few 2D trees in the background here and there and it would run smooth

Okay, I will have to be that guy, sorry about that, but this is my opinion on 3DTrees and treeFx in general : we don't need it... Yet. The technology is far from a good optimization, which means you ended up with frequent frame drop (a well known vibe killer in racing games) for the majority of the user's rigs, leaving just the top tier wanting more and more, and the low tier who will just "run away" from it. It is looking good for sure, yes, but the implementation is generally quite straigtforward, most of the trees feels out-of-place, and when surrounded by lower-detailed objects, becomes even worse. For now, Ihave mainly encounter tracks well detailed with way too much treefx for being useable (koff-koff, nordschleife, hmm), or with the trees being the only "good looking" part. It has a binned-rate of precisely 100% from my end, for now. I didn't tried your's yet, I will later and come back for a proper feedback, but just looking at the images I stand my ground : A good 2D model would be "good enough". On the other hand, a proper "connexion" between the asphalt and the grass, more objects, less redundance in the models and the textures, more variety in the environnement, less "fresh out of the box" feeling, and it would sky-rocket it into the "good looking" category. As of today, one of the most impressive and good looking track ever made for AC for me is Bridgeampton. You know it. Pretty old now, the trees well, don't look straigth at them, but the road, man... So alive, so real, so unique. This is, in my opinion, a far more important workload than any "easy trick" like TreeFx. THIS is what separate the best from the good.

Josep

So agree man. Bridgehampton road feelings are just incredible, it takes immersion to a higher level, so you could get more realistic graphics blabla but it would never impact to immersion as this road example. There are pretty good looking tracks here and there that totally lacks at the road feedback and it becomes as racing over nothing when compared to liskis tracks, and same level tracks from other modders (very few at that excellence level)

My preference would be to avoid 3D trees in general -- or use them sparingly, for effect -- and focus instead on good 2D models. Even with a high-end system, I get a slight performance hit here and there on this and most other tracks I've tried with lots of 3D trees, which is enough to turn me off from them. And I'm honestly not crazy about the way a lot of them look, including these (though I've also seen some that look incredible). Ultimately, the visual benefit (if there is one) doesn't compensate for the cost in fps. If nothing else, I'd avoid them for the sake of those folks with middle-of-the-road or lower systems who wouldn't be able to enjoy racing at these tracks at all.

Rather than relying on my personal opinion, gut feeling or preference, I decided to install the track and have a race on it to see what happened. I ran 5-lap race with a full grid of AI. I'm using an RTX 3070FE card running a single 1440p monitor, and Intel i7 10700 CPU. Nothing overclocked. A fairly modest rig by current standards. CS settings on default, GrassFX on and AC set to nVidia GeForce Experience's recommended settings. I have Sol 2.4 installed but I used the default weather controller for the race. No rain. The field was random mix of GT3, GT4 and GT300 / 500 cars. In 1440p, I didn't see any slow-down, tearing or shuddering at all. My 3070FE card could manage that quite well. Extremely well, to be honest, but I have been playing Star Citizen all week, so I'm used to awful framerates and generally poor performance! In the interest of research, I watched the replay in 4K and it shuddered a bit, especially when several cars were in view, such as the first lap. It wasn't unplayable by any means, but it WAS noticeable. I'll give it a go in VR tomorrow. I don't have triples so I can't test that. Basically, this track doesn't seem to stress my system excessively - I have less optimised tracks with 2D assets in my collection. My system struggles where it would struggle with any track. However, I didn't feel the trees were bringing much to the party. They look nice, but since many of them are identical, it looks weird. Plus, I'm not really looking at the trees while I'm racing. They look great in screenshots, but are less valuable in the race. I think they are best suited to road-type tracks - freedrives - where you only see a few at once. On a circuit you are often going to see distant trees from a bit of the track you are not on, and don't really care about. I think it would be nice to have a few 'specimen' 3D trees dotted about, and use 2D for the bulk. The track is great. To my complete surprise, the AI behaved really well. They all decided to run a one-stop strategy on a five lap race, which was weird. Aside from that, there was very little silliness, and watching the replay (in car - no track cameras) showed some proper racing happening. That says a lot of the track itself - there's room to overtake and a few good places to do it.

Hi, The track base is very good, but, the fps loss is too much and I think for now, it's not worth using the 3d trees. Good job and thanks for your content

I run triple screens at 7680 x 1440with Pure Candy and medium settings with a 2070S and i7 so I have found 3D trees not really worth it but then I know my PC is pretty old now so maybe I don't count lol. But as with all your tracks I love the track, maybe you could do a 2D and a 3D version if you decide to continue the track development. Your Tandragee track is my absolute favourite of 272 tracks on my system. I hate flat tracks and love elevation changes which with my motion platform are an absolute blast!
