While this video will eventually be posted on YouTube, it is a bonus reaction just for Superfans for the time being.

I do plan to react to the rest of the Unearthly Child serial, however, they will not be released on a regular schedule. I'm going to record/release them when I have time to squeeze them in.

I’m glad you went out in a limb and saw this! As you can see, there are stark differences with characters (The Doctor) and while I won’t answer your question about their intent, I will say that the Doctor has been portrayed as very scary, and unpredictable in the Revival, and so they are drawing off the original depiction. I do think that Classic Who will start appealing to you in terms of Characterization when you get to stories that start to feel familiar. The unearthly child in an excellent introduction into the series as it does convey that sense of awe. Imagine seeing that TARDIS in the 60s. What a treat that must have been! Great reaction! I love that you searched and connected with what you know. The police box, the initials the sounds. It’s ironic, the emotional reaction you had to the Classic who would have been very similar reaction to old fans when they saw the revival pilot. (“Oh the TARDIS!” “it’s STILL BIGGER ON THE INSIDE!” “THE SOUND IS THE SAME!”) I actually like the spookier, moodier theme. It evokes a mystery and that kinda carries through in this episode. Enjoy the ride of Doctor Who, it’s one of the best!

Some Classic Who is better than others. What you might want to do later is have a vote where people can suggest some of the better storylines so you do not have to wade through the bad stuff. While the old show quality is obviously not so great, I do notice reactors are still able to enjoy them when they start to fill in info gaps when they watch NuWho. Often people vote for classic shows to watch that help give greater context. A good example is a classic story that leads to the time war you currently see alluded to often. If you are not that into the idea, that is fine, it's just that I notice people start getting curious about the history after a few series in.

Just a little bit of historical context: This very first episode actually had super low television viewership because of Kennedy's assassination the day before and a power cut to part of the country, meaning those who did manage to have power for their TV's were glued to the news instead. This prompted the BBC to re-air the episode the following week on 30 November 1963.

There are certainly some differences, but I fully expected that. I honestly thought the TARDIS set was amazing. Aesthetically speaking, I actually prefer it. I'll be curious to see how it changes over time to become what it is now. I hadn't really thought about how my experience with this is likely the reversal of the experience of the original fans when they first started watching the revival. I would imagine the similar bits would have provided at least a little bit of reassurance. While I'm not a fan of outright scary things, I definitely am a fan of spookier/darker/moodier themes. :)

Thanks! I think I'm going to do An Unearthly Child and The Daleks over the coming months, and then I will put it out for a vote (both on here and YouTube). Especially with the number of episodes and how many are missing, it really does seem like the best way to go.

People did mention in the comments to "Rose" that it had premiered right around the assassination, but I hadn't heard about the power cut or it being re-aired the following week. Thanks for sharing that! :)

In terms of your Classic viewing,I think you've got it exactly right: Every so often, get the Whovian public to nominate/vote for which Classic serial they would next like to see you react to. If I might repeat my earlier suggestion: I think reacting to a Classic story in the gaps between series in New Who would be a good way to go. Partly as a 'palette cleanser' before plunging into the next rollercoaster ride; partly as a good way of 'filling in the gaps' in Who history/mythos; but also (perhaps more importantly) of uploading a Classic reaction when people are expecting one - as you've already discovered, many people feel that "the next story is, imo, the best ever!!";and if they wait anxiously for a whole week only to discover you've uploaded an old Classic serial instead (which they may not even be familiar with) they're going to be disappointed.and probably express that in the YT comments (which means more potential work for your Moderator!) Whereas if they KNEW that 'the bit between series is when Britany reacts to a Classic story',things might be a lot easier for you. (Plus,it gives you plenty of time to put out a Classic poll)

Ian Smith

Loved your reaction :) Yes,the Doctor is edgier - but,as Steve Combs says, the Doctor in the Revival can be just as edgy and (at times) unapproachable. Wait and see :)

One of the things about Classic Who is that there's so much variation even within a single Doctor. Heck, I think even this episode is not typical of the story it's a part of much less the first Doctor. Obviously the show, and the character, developed as it went along and this is only episode 1. I think your approach of watching a few select stories is a good one. I also think it will mean more once you get a bit more of NuWho under your belt (partly because NW tends to do Easter Eggs and callbacks to CW). I also think with very early Who, you have to adjust to the style of it a bit. Personally when I went back to watch it a few years ago I thought I was prepared for B&W, poor effects, sets, picture quality etc. But I wasn't prepared for other differences like styles of shooting and acting. Film was expensive and even though it was pre-recorded they were only allowed so many edits per episode and it ends up feeling like a filmed play at times - complete with some flubbed lines that they just keep in. It just has a different feel to it. The Daleks is definitely a good one to pick. Not only is it the introduction of the Daleks it's actually one of the best early stories IMO (and I'm not even that much of a Dalek fan tbh). But ultimately make sure you are enjoying it. If it's not your cup of tea that's OK.

Thanks for this suggestion! I'm not really planning on taking gaps between series and I know that some of the Classic serials can be 4-6 episodes (and in some cases more, correct?) so I wouldn't really want the people interested in only the revival episodes to have to wait that long. The Classic episodes will be treated as an entirely different show (at least in terms of placement on the channel). My plan is to do the episodes for one serial at a time as I can squeeze them into my schedule and put them on here. Then, when the entire serial is complete, I'll post them on YouTube with a very clear explanation (both in the video itself and the description for each episode) that it's not a regular show on the channel and that I will only be doing one serial at a time. So, hopefully that should eliminate the type of comments you mentioned. :)

But, I can forgive or look past a lot of things if just know why they happen. So, thank you for sharing this! :) I'm glad to hear The Daleks is a good to do. I've a lot of people reference the Genesis of the Daleks (I think that's the name?), but since this is the first serial they're in and only the second in the series, it made sense to me to go ahead and do it. Your last comment is part of why I'm releasing them here on Patreon first. I want to make sure it is something I can stick with (even on a serial-by-serial basis), but I put it out to the general public and then get a bunch of people asking questions about the next episode. lol

I am excited to see how the character (and the actor's portrayal of him) evolves as everything starts to get fully settled.

Genesis of the Daleks is one of the greatest Doctor Who stories, and features the first appearance of my favourite villain (I’ll say no more)

Jamie Dodds

The BBC was ready to cancel the show after the first serial. Sydney Newman didn’t want any B.E.M’s (bug eyed monsters) but Verity Lambert (the producer) fought hard to get the Daleks in the next story, and the rest as they say, is history

I did hear a bit about this in a comment on YouTube and I think it's such a fascinating story. Verity certainly seems like a trailblazer who was ahead of her time. :)

Jamie Dodds

Well when you do get to the 50th Anniversary, you’ll have to watch An Adventure In Space and Time drama about the birth of Doctor Who and the story of what it took to get Who to the screen ! ;)

Sounds good to me. I love watching things like that. :) I'll likely forget about it by then, but I'm sure someone will remind me. lol

Jamie Dodds

I’ll remind you don’t worry ! Hahaha
