Episode 18 1. Before watching this episode, I'd never really thought about how a natural disaster like a flood or a hurricane could make it easier for crimes to be committed because of the lack of evidence. The team definitely had things on hard mode here, but I think they handled it really well. The Jack the Ripper connection is also cool, especially since personally I've always found that case fascinating and wondered who it was. I also like the twist that the killer is a woman; I didn't see it coming at all until they brought it up. 2. Reid is still treating Emily weirdly, which at this point is probably continuing because of her checking in on him last episode, and she still seems to be keeping an eye on him, so he feels exposed. He may even be worried she'll say something to the team. But as much as I feel for Reid and what he's been through, his behavior affected the case and his professionalism. I'm also sad for Emily because even though she may know he's struggling to some degree, you can see on her face that she's still hurt by his comments and coldness toward her. She's still new and trying to fit in, and it probably makes her feel unwelcome or like more of an outsider to the team. 3. It seems like Reid seeing his friend and getting advice from him was what he needed. In the latter part of the episode, he was more like himself, and he finally opened up a little bit. Do you think he'll finally start opening up to the rest of the team as well and really getting back to normal, or at least as normal as someone can be after his experience? 4. How do you feel about Will? He obviously seems to have a thing for JJ (and who could blame him), but I'm on the fence about whether I like him or not. 5. I just have to say that Emily looked GORGEOUS this episode. I mean, she always looks good, but all of her outfits and her makeup were especially stunning in this one!

Episode 19 1. I find this episode to be both especially heartbreaking and horrifying. Burning alive seems like one of the absolute worst ways to go. And whil yes, we've had arson episode before, I think this is one of those particularly well-done episodes of the show in general; Every time I watch it I feel like I'm experiencing everything with the characters. 2. I'm curious, did you recognize the actress who plays Charlotte, the mom from the first family who passed at the beginning? Her name is Stacy Edwards, and she's what I would consider a prolific guest star; she has had one-episode arcs on dozens of popular shows plus she's done many movies, and she boasts an impressive 91 total IMDb acting credits. I think she's incredible; every time I see her in something, I'm enamored by her acting, and this episode is no exception. Her performance here makes me cry every time I rewatch without fail. 3. I'm happy that Reid seems much more like himself; talking about his feelings to his friend and to Gideon last episode must have been a huge weight off his chest since he was just letting it accumulate for so long. Do you think this storyline is completely resolved, or do you see it coming up again in the future? 4. We've finally seen something get to Emily! This is the first time since joining the team that a case has visibly affected her, even more surprisingly, to the point where she was holding back tears. They've made it a point that she's emotionally tough and doesn't get spooked easily. She even said herself that she's good at compartmentalization, so what do you think is different about this one specifically that got to her to the point of it being obvious? It might have been because this was the first time she had to speak face-to-face with a living victim who went through something horrific, which is very different from dealing with people who have already passed. But we also know so little about her background at this point that it makes me wonder if there's some connection to her personal life, like a trauma that we don't know about. Every little development there is with her just makes so desperate to know everything about her!

Episode 20 1. IT'S TIIIIIIIIMEEEE!!! Finally, we got a more Emily-centric episode! There's so much to say about this one, but of course the main thing is Emily's mother and their relationship. Does it surprise you at all that we met her so soon? I know I wasn't expecting it on my first watch. 2. I feel so sad for Emily; it's obvious that she just wants her mom to be proud of her, and even though she's doing something so important and meaningful with her life, it doesn't seem to be enough. 3. In terms of the overall vibe going on between Emily and her mother, is it about what you expected, or is there anything you find surprising? I think we were kind of set up for this a bit with Emily talking about her childhood and her hate for politics, but the awkwardness, and even what I would call indifference, is palpable between them. It's especially interesting because evidently there's no father in the picture, at least not one that's ever been mentioned, and I think it's more common for single parents to be closer with their children, which is not the case here. 4. Case-wise, I personally think this is one of those episodes where the character stuff is driving it, and the case is a bit weaker. I still found it interesting, but it wasn't the real focus of the episode, and I didn't find myself attaching to it the way I have with some others. 5. We can add to Emily's language roster, which thus far includes Arabic and Spanish, and now we have Russian! I remember always waiting for Emily to speak a new language when I first binged this show. 6. Huge props to the casting director on this one. I personally think Emily's mother looks so much like her, which I find especially impressive because Paget has a very unique facial structure and features, and her mother's actress (Kate Jackson) has features that match shockingly well, they could easily be related in real life. 7. Kinda crazy that at the end of your last reaction you brought Emily's mother up and then she was in this episode, you must be psychic!

Episode 21 1. Wow, what an episode. This is one of those iconic Criminal Minds cases that people always bring up, and I totally understand why. There's something particularly terrifying and disgusting about two young boys being raised and groomed into chasing and hunting other human beings for sport. I already personally hate the "hobby" of hunting animals for sport and people who teach their kids to do it, but this just takes it to a whole other level. 2. What are your thoughts on the culpability of the killers? Obviously they've done horrific things and deserve proper punishment for it, but at what level do you think they're at fault? This is one of those difficult nature versus nurture situations where we can't really know if they would've ended up like this anyway, or if they would've been normal had they not been raised in seclusion and taught to be this way. It makes me sad to think about the fact that they could've had normal lives and so many people could've survived had the system worked better in their favor and they were sent to a good home instead of being placed with their uncle. Either way, It's obvious they got to a point of not just belief in this ritual, but genuine viciousness and even joy in the action, especially the older brother. 3. If they hadn't been killed, do you think that it would've been possible for them to be treated in a high-security mental facility instead of a prison? Or do you think they're just too brainwashed and too far gone to change at this point? I think they unfortunately might be a lost cause, considering how old they are and how many years this has been ingrained in them. 4. Interesting fact about this episode: The idea was based on the real-life case of an Alaskan serial killer named Robert Hansen, also known as the Butcher Baker. He was active from 1971 to 1983, and he killed at least 17 women, among other things he did to them that I won't go into detail about. But, just like in this episode, many of his victims were released into the wilderness by him, where he would subsequently hunt them with a rifle and hunting knives. He was eventually caught and sentenced to 461 years' imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and he died in prison in 2014. Many Criminal Minds cases are based at least in part on real cases, but I just find this one especially interesting because of the uniquely horrific M.O.
