9.18 *I apologize for my long-winded thoughts and questions; I just like to explain the bts info because it usually helps make sense of what is seen on screen* What are some ways you think the episode could have been improved upon (you might have already discussed it before reading this question)? I personally would have kept Athena in surgery while all of this chaos is happening instead of May and Ravi pushing her around the hospital. The showrunner was trying to incorporate Angela into this story so that she didn’t have to do much physically because she had to undergo an unexpected procedure and rest for the entirety of March, he knew there wouldn't be much time to film her stuff because filming was supposed to end in the first few weeks of April, so those scenes with her in the bed made it easy for her to shoot. It also explains why she only had one scene in 9.16 and wasn’t part of the dispatch stuff with everyone investigating the situation with the immigrants. Her scenes for 9.17 and 9.18 were also filmed much later. They were even filming her scenes for 9.17 during the final week of filming in April while 9.18 had already started filming or was close to being done. So honestly, just having her still in surgery without having to move her around would have worked also. We also could have used Eddie better instead of just having him locked in an elevator and stabbed. He’s a paramedic, so we could have had more people injured, with Chim and Hen working on one person while Eddie helps another. Since May is looking to become a nurse, she could have assisted him too. Buck and Harry (+ Ravi now in the group) could have also done more than just shut off the power. They could have worked together to direct Anatoly away from the operating room with the help of Maddie because she had the blueprints to the hospital. *Things I enjoy + more production/writing/overall show and network decisions* I did like the ending for the migrants, and I wouldn’t mind them bringing that story back since these issues unfortunately aren’t going away anytime soon. It could also give Eddie more stories going forward. I’m looking forward to Nurse May and Detective Athena. Apparently, they had been thinking about making Athena a detective since S8, but the network initially didn’t want to because they didn’t want to take her out of the uniform and have her stop showing up on calls. Eventually, the showrunner said it was getting tiring having to constantly find reasons for Athena, as a sergeant, to investigate things when that isn’t really her job. The network finally gave the go ahead while breaking the story for 9.15. If you remember, in that episode the shady detective said to her, “Get yourself a detective shield next time.” I think the success of shows like High Potential may have helped with the network giving them the go ahead, especially since they’re also adding a detective to the cast of 911 Nashville as well. I think the show is shifting more toward having different types of responders, like detectives, nurses, lawyers, etc., with some being recurring and others being mains. I think for 9.14 questions, I asked how you would feel about the show exploring the hospital element. I think you said you would enjoy it but also that it might take away from other stuff. Knowing the direction the show seems to be taking now, with May’s nursing storyline becoming more integral to the show and Detective Athena also, has your stance on these new aspects changed?

EPISODE 16 FUN FACT Ryan tried to play Eddie as angry with Sam being introduced in Buck’s place but the director told him to tone it down. But you can see Ryan/Eddie slowly seething in the background.

EPISODE 17 1. Do you think we’ll see Theo again? 2. Did you notice the parallels between Buck and Eddie with the way Buck tried to hold Eddie back when it was Shannon on the ground dying and when Eddie was holding Buck back from seeing Connor and Cameron dying? The way this show constantly has parallels between Buck and Eddie. FUN FACT: The people who play Theo are twins!! The same way the people who play Jee-Yun are twins. It’s all to do with child labour laws.

SEASON 9 FINALE 1. Are you going to watch S10 Weekly as it airs on Oct 15th (Thursday in the US)? 2. Tim confirmed that Eddie and Alex were supposed to be a thing but that their chemistry wasn’t there. He said afterwards he regrets trying because he knows romance is better when it isn’t forced which they tried to do. What are your thoughts? 3. What do you think about the fact that Eddie’s love interest’s have consisted of; Teacher, nun, dead wife doppelgänger and a therapist? Shows Eddie needs HELP. 4. Do you think Eddie needs more emotional support from the 118 as a group? We got everyone support Hen in her sickness, Buck with his drug dependency and Chimney with his court case. But when Eddie was stabbed they all had a group hug while he was suffering in the elevator. They weren’t even there while Abuela died. I feel like he is always missing. I never noticed it until he wasn’t involved with Bobby’s death episodes. Ryan has been more confident in sharing at his dissatisfaction at being involved with major storylines. 5. Do you think Eddie will be there to support Buck with Theo the way that Buck did with Eddie and Chris? 6. Tim confirmed that they brought in this storyline for Buck because they didn’t want another love interest. It shows that they don’t want Buddie just to have any other love interest and they’re trying to do other things because they might not be able to do Buddie right now. They also know love interests just won’t work.

Episode 16 1. How do you think Buck has grown since S1 when it comes to being away from doing his job as a firefighter? In the past, Buck has been resistant to being away from work (like during the truck bombing and then eventual lawsuit), communicating that his identity is deeply entrenched in being a firefighter. During the lightning strike he refused to see why everyone was making it a big deal. Now while awaiting word of reinstatement, do you feel his identity has broadened and/or do you think he recognizes the impact he has on those around him as just Buck? 2. Chimney is finally forced to defend his first year as captain. Do you think the review board has a point, or are they unfairly blaming Chimney for circumstances he couldn’t control? The board brings up Hen’s medical emergency, the field amputation, Buck’s situation, and other difficult calls. How much responsibility should a captain actually carry for things that happen to their crew? 3. How do you feel about Ravi’s inclusion in the story thus far? Previously you’ve mentioned how you’ve wanted to see more of him (and no one can blame you) and we’ve talked about how Ravi can be read as someone who keeps his cards close to his chest. Do you think the dynamic of him on the team has changed? It seems that now he’s willing to jump in the shenanigans of the firefam with both feet. 4. So this episode gives us an interesting perspective of what it means to be a new firefighter trying to integrate themselves in the 118. You have Ravi who was a rookie prior to Harry and who Buck tried (and failed) to take under his wing, Harry who is the current rookie but someone who has previous ties to the firefam, and now Sam. A Shift (who is the firefam, not sure that’s been made clear to you before) are notoriously close knit, which is pretty true to form at many firehouses. What do you think this episode is trying to communicate what it means to be a part of the 118 and by extension A Shift?

Episode 17 1. How do you feel knowing that Kameron and Connor tried to involve Buck in Theo’s life throughout the years, and Buck stayed away? Knowing who Buck is, do you think it was a smart move? Were Kameron/Connor out of line in even asking to have him involved? 2. Thoughts on Kameron and Connor’s parenting and fact finding mission with Buck? Many viewers felt like they didn’t want to understand Theo, they just wanted to fix him, but I disagree. I think as new parents, they’re overwhelmed and they are trying to figure out the best way to help him. 3. I am really loving these scenes between Chim and Buck where Chim takes time to validate and uplift Buck. They’ve come a long way and grown so much as coworkers and family. They’re able to banter and pick on each other but know when each other needs the real deal talk. 4. Eddie realizes what happened to Connor and Kameron before Buck does and physically tries to stop him from seeing the crash. How does that moment compare with Buck trying to protect Eddie from seeing Shannon after her accident? This is probably the most interesting Buddie question of the episode because the show deliberately mirrors the situations. Ryan Guzman later called the parallel “poetic” and said it was a testament to how Buck and Eddie are there for each other. Tim Minear confirmed it was intentional. 5. What do you think Buck will do concerning Theo’s care moving forward? Will he foster, adopt, or get visitation rights…how do you think that may negate the theme of this show that family is not blood, but the people you choose? Or does it prove it much more strongly if Buck decides to be a part of Theo’s life? 6. What do you think of Eddie’s involvement with the migrant storyline? Originally, Eddie was not a prominent part of the story till Ryan read the script and spoke with Tim. Ryan felt like Eddie is moving towards finding a calling in speaking/fighting for those who cannot for themselves (Abigail being a more recent example), and Tim agreed. With that in mind, how does that paint your view of Eddie’s involvement and potential new storylines in S10 that may become available to Eddie, outside of his relationship with Buck?

Episode 18 FUN FACT: The finale was literally conceived as “Die Hard in a hospital”. Tim Minear said that was essentially the starting concept for the finale. They had access to a real hospital location for about a week, and he needed a story that could keep Athena present despite Angela Bassett's scheduling constraints. That eventually became the hospital lockdown/trafficking storyline. Minear also said, he looked at the finale and thought: What am I going to do with Eddie? He wanted a scene where Eddie could have his own encounter with the villain, similar to the classic Die Hard dynamic where the hero has a tense interaction with the antagonist without initially realizing exactly who they're dealing with. His solution was essentially: “I think I have to stab him.” 1. One of the worries you had going into this season is how they’d address the Bobby of it all. Now being all caught up, or you content with how it was addressed? 2. Eddie is once again put in danger because of his decision to advocate for people who don't have anyone else fighting for them. In looking at potential storylines for S10, where do you think that could take him? 3. Buck deciding to become Theo’s foster parent is obviously a huge moment, but what do you think is actually motivating him? 4. When Tim brought up the idea of bringing the “sperm baby” storyline back to Oliver he was apprehensive, but he was adamant that Eddie needed to be involved going forward, and with the way Buck has been a key figure in both Eddie and Christopher’s life, it makes sense to me. How do you see that playing out? In interviews leading up to S10, Minear has mentioned that Buck will struggle with what his role is in Theo’s life and how to address Kameron and Connors death. Do you think under these conditions, Buck could ever see himself truly as a “dad”? 5. Like I mentioned, the plan into S10 is to have Eddie involved with the Buck/Theo storyline and I hope Chris also plays a role because of his experience in losing a parent when he was so young. But if I take my Buddie goggles off a bit, I would really enjoy seeing Buck lean on Hen/Karen’s fostering experience and how they addressed bringing Mara after both her parents died. I love Buck/Eddie/Christopher moments, but I think this is another avenue that can be explored. Also because I have no clue where Hen goes from here. She’s the only character where I have no clue what else could possibly happen to her to move her forward. 6. I’ve been waiting 9 seasons to ask you that most hotels devoted question within the fandom and see where you stand: Do you think Eddie knows he’s in love with Buck and is actively repressing it? Ryan has said he doesn't think Eddie is consciously avoiding or repressing what other people see in his relationship with Buck, he genuinely doesn't read into it because Buck is so close to him. But he also says Eddie could honestly answer what Buck means to him, that there is a sense of love there. Do you think Eddie is actually oblivious to his feelings, or is he simply not questioning something that feels completely natural to him? And does that distinction change how you interpret all the times Eddie seems “oblivious” to the way other people perceive him and Buck? Most recently, how he was treated in New Mexico and how his relationship with Buck was perceived. People also argue about Eddie’s supposed sexuality: is he gay? Bi? Some nebulous other thing? I tend to lean on the thought that they might play it as Eddie is queer because he loves Buck, not he loves Buck because he’s queer. More of a demisexuality angle, perhaps? 7. So Maddie and Eddie have interacted this season, not much but we know they talk and have each other’s numbers haha. What potential do you see for that dynamic in S10? NOTE: Not sure if you’ll question this as you watch the episode, but a hospital lockdown after a shooting, is an actual thing that happens. It is a pain in the ass but a necessity. It also happens on a smaller scale if someone is brought in after a shooting and the shooter is not in custody. PD will stage outside the ED and only certain people all allowed through.

Episode 18 - EXTRA Now that you're all caught up, I wanted to share what I call "My Buck Thesis" and hear your thoughts: I've always seen Buck as someone who feels like he is “left of center” with the things he has in his life. Like he has them, but he doesn’t feel like he can truly take ownership of them because there is not a pre-determined category. Examples: 1) Maddie is more than a sister but less than a mom. Daniel had her as a sister, but Buck got a different version of Maddie. Not better or worse, just different than your typical sibling relationship. 2) Bobby was more than a captain but less than a father. I think Buck struggles with the idea of fully accepting the loss for what it is without diminishing its impact because in his mind, Bobby wasn’t really his dad. 3) Christopher is more than his best friend’s kid but less than his son or a parent to him. Not trying to lessen Buck’s impact in Chris’ life, but Buck is not Eddie to Chris…but he’s also not an uncle, either. He’s his guardian but only if Eddie dies. I wonder how this similar idea may be challenged with Theo now in the picture. 4) Eddie is more than a best friend but less of a husband/partner. I think Buck really struggles with how to categorize Eddie in his life any time he looks at it, so he avoids it like the plague and also doesn’t feel like he has any right to ask any of the things that may fall under that partner umbrella. Overall, I think the show is trying to cause friction against our preconceived notions on what certain relationships should look like, which I enjoy, but I do think some of them may need to be addressed before Buck feels like he can settle into his life fully. Bobby was addressed with Buck’s dad validating his place in Buck’s life…we’ll see what comes of the others. Buck's problem may not actually be that his relationships lack labels; it's that he has learned to use the lack of a label as a reason to limit what he's allowed to want from those relationships.
