So I’m going to call this episode a personal turning point for Damon. Let me just start by saying: I despise Katherine. I’m incredibly reasonable and rational and logical about every aspect of this show. I try to look at everything - good or bad - in as positive a light as possible because I love it so much. But something about Katherine always pisses me off. Well it’s a very specific something actually. Her treatment of Damon. Nothing is made more obvious in season two then how unbelievably lucky Damon was that Katherine didn’t return his feelings. He dodged a massive bullet. As always, season two is Damon-centric. And much of the focus on his development revolves around how he’s moved on from Katherine and broken the poisonous hold she had over him for so many decades. This episode is a stellar example of just how far he’s come in that regard. And how much better off he is for loving Elena, even though she isn’t his to love yet. I don’t know about you, but I love overprotective Elena. I think her concern for Katherine’s presence in the boarding house is just wonderful. Because it isn’t her own safety she’s worried about. She’s afraid for the tricks Katherine will play on the brothers. She doesn’t want Katherine to toy with them anymore, play with their emotions or try to come between them again. And that in and of itself should be sufficient evidence in favor of Damon and Elena’s relationship. Because no one has ever looked out for Damon like Elena does. No one even thought of the potential emotional repercussions that Katherine’s reappearance could cause the Salvatore’s. Except Elena. The moment in the cellar between Katherine and Damon again breaks my heart. The look the end of this conversation puts on Damon’s face is unforgivable. It’s somehow worse than the broken expression he wore when she told him she’d never loved him in 2x01. I mean how selfish can you be. Seriously. This man died for her. Turned for her. Spent most of his life waiting to be with her and save her from a supposedly terrible situation she wasn’t even in. It’s part of the tragedy that is Damon Salvatore that he so selflessly devoted himself to a woman who cared nothing for him. A woman who cared so little she’s repeatedly put his heart in a blender and his life in jeopardy. All for her own survival and amusement. As monstrous as Damon may be at times, he’s nothing compared to Katherine. And I think it’s important to remember that. To recognize that much of the darkness in Damon was created by outside forces. By Katherine, by his father. Damon is, at his core, a genuinely sweet and honest and loving soul. Anyone with the depth of love and capacity for commitment that he carries was sure to be shattered and warped by the evil done to him at the hands of others. Not to say that Damon is a victim. He’s the furthest thing. He’s much too strong. But he is fragile at heart because what he wants more than anything in the world is to be loved and accepted. Just by one person. It was what he initially believed he’d found with Katherine. Someone he fit with, someone who knew him and loved him as he was not as they wanted him to be. It turns out Katherine was even worse than the rest of them. She wanted Damon for her own carnal reasons, and as soon as his feelings morphed into dependence she used and abused that part of him and corrupted it into something dangerous. And she didn’t leave any part of him unscathed either. She made sure his destruction was total and complete at every level, using his every weakness against him. Especially his greatest insecurity of all. One that has shaped him all his life. His little brother. Much of Damon’s character is predicated on the issues he’s amassed over everyone’s constant preference for Stefan. In Damon’s eyes, his brother is a golden child, a hero and saint who has been lauded over him all his life. Everyone always chooses Stefan. That is a massive bone of contention for Damon. And Katherine knows it. She exploits it without shame. Again when she reveals that she had a choice between Stefan and Damon when making that deal with John. It is just as unforgivable as the scene in the cellar. The crack in his voice at the end is heartbreaking. I almost wish he’d staked her a second time. In the heart. But he didn’t. For someone who snaps impulsively when his emotions get the better of him, he exercised complete restraint here. He walked away. I find that wildly significant. Because the last time Katherine threw her preference for Stefan in his face Damon wound up drunkenly killing Jeremy. But no one suffers for his constant rejection in this episode. She just told him yet again that she chooses Stefan no matter what. She loves Stefan, she prefers him, she’d save him over Damon anytime. And Damon doesn’t react rashly. That tells me, as much as hearing all of this from her hurts him, at the same time - deep down - he doesn’t truly want her acceptance anymore either. He’s moved on from Katherine, is no longer the same man who tried so hard to earn her approval. And not just because he finally understands that no good will come from continuing to pine for Katherine. Because he loves someone else. Because he’s not only moved on FROM Katherine, but he’s also moved on TO someone new. Someone deserving of his affections. His love for Elena almost acts like a shield here, not keeping him from feeling the sting of Katherine’s brutal honesty but allowing him to more or less brush off her cruel words and leave with as much as dignity as possible. And the moment he rejects her in the last scene was the cherry on top. I cheer when I watch this scene. Every time. I mean Katherine seriously has some issues and next level confidence to think that she can be messing with him the whole day and hurting him only to come to his bed later at night to pry information using sex. But Damon doesn’t take the bait. Again using that wonderful new shield he now has - constructed from his love for Elena - he flat out rejects her. Not only does he no longer love her, he doesn’t want her either. Therefore it's an emotional turning point for Damon once again.

I feel sad about Luka in this episode because I honestly believe that he didn't deserve to die and definitely not in this horrific manner but poor thing. He paid the bigger price in this war zone. I'm just glad that in all of this in the end Bonnie did get her powers back. Elena is mature for her age. I am always proud of her and admire that she can be happy for her friends. She is always encouraging Bonnie and Caroline to go ahead and make those choices in life that will give them happiness. And I understand her not wanting to have Katherine around because she is always impersonating her which is wrong. But she does understand that at the end of the day if it helps at all it is okay to tolerate. I absolutely respect Alaric this episode. I am in awe of how he left things for Elena to decide as to when and how Jenna will be finding out things. Of course things never go as per plan because now we have Isobel back but he is always impressive with these small gestures of being sweet and as honest as he can possibly be in these circumstances. Now Caroline and Matt. I don't know I feel like this is being dragged a little bit. However I am glad that the creatives did want to give us the opportunity to find out how Matt would react to finding about vampires and Caroline being one. It was expected that it won't be anything good. But now Caroline knows that she has tried to be honest and it didn't go well. So now if's to wonder about in this case. I wish they would just be friends now.

Achna expressed almost everything I wanted to say quite eloquently as usual. I just wanted to add something that is underlined in these episodes. The parallel situations between Caroline and Matt and Alaric and Jenna, brings out the question of honesty and truth and allow us to ponder about, what is more important to be brutally honest no matter the consequence or retain a difficult truth to be explained, with a white lie, to protect your loved one and the privacy of other people involved? But in this reality, the truth comes out in the most unexpected way and consequences are not going to be pleasant as for example we saw in Tyler case, where the truth was brought out by someone that manipulated the situation to her own personal advantage. So, the writers’ point of view on the matter of being truthful with difficult complicated situation is clear, yes you should, no matter what the consequences are going to be, because not knowing put people in danger and create misunderstanding with consequences, much worse than the actual truth. And here we go it is happening again, Jenna that knows from Alaric mouth that his wife is dead, because technically she is, and she shows up to her door very much alive. Oh dear!! We will see how Jenna will react to this bombshell and what Matt will do with the unsettling information that have being dropped on him in the most traumatic why.
