I think the timeline for Season 1 is pretty clear. The first words anyone says to Charlie in Ep 1 is when his teacher tells him Happy New Year, just before he meets Nick. 30 seconds in, we see from his phone that it's Monday 4th January. When Ben accosts him in the Music building Charlie has just said "it's February." In Ep 2, Nick tells his mum he met Charlie "a couple months ago." In Ep 6 the flyer on Charlie's bedroom wall gives the date of the Spring Concert that ends the episode as Friday May 7. Interestingly for a show released in 2022, Monday 4 January and Friday 7 May are dates from 2021.

Soooo I don’t know how I missed it before, but it looked like Ben was tearing up when Charlie dragged him. Hate the small part of me that wants to feel bad for him.

Erm, well, I'm for more than fine with you interrupting the show while watching, Harry. You keep your in-between-talks short and you always have something interesting to say. That is why I like your reactions best. Keep it up! Now for some random remarks, cause I need to start my day. First, we have sports day, too, in Germany. The f***ing "Bundesjugendspiele". Everyone has to to three tasks: One race, one jumping event and one kind of throwing a round object, depending on what your age group is. Harry, you can savely read the first two volumes of Heartstopper, but then you have to stop if you don't want to get spoiled for season 2. And I'm afraid you probably have to wait for season 3 before you can read "Solitaire", "Nick and Charlie" and "This Winter". Ups, gotta start my day, you have a nice one! :)

Fun Fact: That was the author, Alice Oseman, sitting next to them on the train.

Nick’s emotional intelligence is off the charts. In the comics he swears like a sailor too, which is really endearing for such a nice guy.

In terms of the books, Solitaire (the one about Tori) is brilliant, lots of dark humour, but there are lots of major spoilers for Charlie's future story. In terms of Heartstopper itself, ep. 1-3 are volume 1 basically verbatim. The rest of the season is up to the end of volume 2, but follows it a bit more loosely to bring in more of the peripheral characters.

Episode 8 gets me every time. Nick's talk with Charlie in the corridor, the way they look at each other on the beach, the way Nick hugs Charlie... ❤️😭🏳️‍🌈

Yep we have sports days in Australia too. It was called house sports at my school. Being australia we also have a swimming carnival each year. (swimming is considered a necessary safety skill here, most primary schools have two weeks during the year where they all go for daily swimming lessons)

Mathilde

Did you watch One Day at a Time? Because if you liked Santana's coming out scene, you'll love Elena's. Similar setup, different outcome but done beautifully!

Emily Brown

We have sports day in the US. We call it field day.

I would be very interested to hear your take on graphic novels 1&2 (up through beach scene/coming out to mum) compared to the show. There are some key differences and your opinion would be interesting.

I'm going to do now what I wanted to do this morning and that is randomly commenting on bits and pieces of the show and also this reaction, which I enjoyed A LOT. So... I love the scene when Tao and Charlie make up and apologize to each other. I agree with everyone, that Tao needed to do that, but I also think that Charlie's "I should have been looking out for you as much as you've been looking out for me." is needed as well. In the opening scene when we get a look at Charlie's phone and there is a "I love you" and later a big heart from Tao to Charlie previous to the "barely friends anymore" comment it just cracks my heart. Charlie truely neglected Tao for a while (for understandable reasons, but he did) and I'm glad that he grasped that and they have forgiven each other. --- I do feel sorry for Ben, especially when I see him crying after Charlie tells him to leave him alone, but I can't help cheering for Charlie when he does that, because it was so well deserved. I agree with you, Harry, Ben is, as you said "one of the most horrible beings ever", at least to Charlie. So, IF there is a redemption arc in the future, I hope it takes place where Charlie is not subjected to it!! --- I like how Nick and Charlie both have different insecurities and the way they deal with them throughout the series. Most people go on how great and almost perfect Nick is for Charlie, and I agree. So I don't need to elaborate that. But I just have to point out that Charlie (who is my favourite character) is just as perfect for Nick. When Nick tells Charlie in the corridor scene that he is "the kindest, most thoughtful and caring and amazing person in the whole world", he literally states the truth. That is exactly what Charlie is to Nick. Just imagine Nick falling for someone who would pressure him into coming out or someone being jeallous about Imogen or someone just wanting his rugby lad body or someone being not okay with a bisexual instead of a gay guy or... But Nick fell for Charlie and that was the best that could happen to him. So I couldn't agree more to your "you both deserve it", Harry. --- I just ADORE the balancing between realistic and joyful in the show and the books and when you say that you want more joy than pain in future episodes I absolutely second that. --- I stongly suspect tao is faster doing high knee skips than he is when he tries to run. --- I thought I was the only one who thought Elle and Charlie first met in Mr Ajayi's classroom! At least nobody mentioned that before. I nearly skipped when you did! I'd like to have the backstory of Charlie and Tao befriending Elle and Isaac. --- When Nick takes Charlie's hand I don't think the whole school automatically knows or even suspects that they are an item. First, only the few people standing directly next to them actually see it. I think many of them would continue watching the match after shaking their heads about Nick Nelson leaving. Secondly, Charlie is known to hug his assumedly straight friends in public (-> Tao). So being dragged away by Nick for a talk by the hand might not be seen as overly suspicious, because thirdly most people see Nick as straight as he doesn't fit in the gay cliché. But: After this scene there might be a few rumours. --- About the timeline: Nick and Charlie meet after the Christmas holidays in January. On the evening of snow day Nick's mum asks: "Charlie seems like a lovely boy. When did you meet him?" and Nick answers: "A couple of months ago." From the comics I know that snow day was March 20th, so it's not entirely untrue, even if "weeks" would have been more acurat. Maybe it just felt to Nick like he knew Charlie for a long time? (I know, I just want to MAKE it fit. ;) ) And they kissed at Harry Greene's birthday for the first time, which is April 17th. Charlie started pining right away in January and Elle didn't know immediately that the pining had been replaced by them dating, so her "months of pining" comment actually fit. --- I totally cracked up at the end of your reaction when you complained about this being the end, just because I could tear down the walls myself, wanting more and more Heartstopper content. That's why I ended up here by the way. As I stated in another of your comment sections, I originally got dragged to the show by one of my kids. At the moment they are making me watch Skam OG with them (we are halfway through season 2). That is an experience, let me tell you!! After seeing all those cute British sweethearts being so wholesome, now I'm watching little Norwegian shits (nothing against Norwegians in general!) trying to socially interact and constantly cheating on each other. I'm enjoying myself anyway and I MIGHT be staying here on your patreon for a little while longer to watch more of your reactions. Well, I'm totally gonna do that. Love your reactions <3

Yeah I'm excited for Season 2 as well, I hope they don't do a Love Victor though and give them constant relationship problems and fights ahaha

Eleosch

Don't be too worried. The creator of the novels, Alice Oseman, is involved in the production of the show as well and she is pretty protective of her characters.

Yeah, ummm, second season… it’ll be hard to watch but oh so heartwarming. I know I’ll be crying the whole time. If you didn’t read the books I’m not gonna spoil it for you, but just watching Charlie in second season will shutter me and seeing Nick just step up (he can’t get any better you might say, but oh he does) will forever ruin me in a most beautiful way. Can’t wait for the next season!

Emily Brown

I saw one person comment on how alone Nick was before Charlie (and by extension Tara, Darcy, Elle, etc). Charlie can ask his questions to Mr Ajayi and has other queer friends who embrace all of him, but Nick asks the internet and has to sort through all the mess on his own until he gets a community thanks to Charlie. While Nick gets lots of (deserved) credit for rescuing Charlie, Charlie rescues Nick as well.

Charlie

This season is based on volumes 1 and 2 of the comics, so you can safely read those. There are key differences but nothing that will spoil future seasons. I believe season 2 of the show will cover volume 3 of the comics alone, since they start to get longer and cover heavier subject matters. However, I would suggest waiting to read the other books. Solitaire takes place around the time of volume 4 of the Heartstopper comics, so you would definitely be getting a lot of spoilers there about Nick and Charlie and their relationship. It will also be interesting to see if Radio Silence does indeed get its own show or some kind of adaptation in the future. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing how Alice develops Isaac’s character in the next two seasons, since he’s new to the show.

Emily Brown

I really appreciate you stopping and analyzing deeper. It’s what makes your reactions my favorite.

AngelaTeacher

After they apologized to each other and made up, Charlie and Tao said they needed to have a movie night on Saturday. I like to imagine that is when they had a more in depth conversation about their feelings and everything that happened between them. I also like to imagine Tao grilled Charlie on how the hell he landed "Rugby King Nick Nelson" as his boyfriend! If you think about it, Tao knows absolutely nothing about Nick and Charlie's relationship, Nick rescuing Charlie from Ben, their kiss at Harry's party....all Tao knows is that they sat next to each other in form, Charlie suddenly joined the Rugby team, and all of a sudden he and Nick started hanging out all the time. Tao and Charlie have so much to catch up on!

Sabine

Thanks for mentioning Bundesjugendspiele! Most horrific times of sporting activities throughout my entire school life. But I must say, Truman-Higgs Sports Day looks much more fun than what I had to go through back in the day :D

Lexie

Just adding to the chorus to say don't read Solitaire (Tori's book) yet - it's set after Heartstopper and has massive spoilers for Charlie's character arc. It's also a very different vibe in general.
