The problem with Stefan is that he was create a vampire when he was 17 years old, lived a life very sheltered, never went to war as Damon did, he was quite spoilt. That is why Emily when he became a vampire said that his heart was still pure and this is what it was going to be his curse. He never learned to control strong impulses and being a vampire and never learning to control himself, isn’t fitting with what he regarded himself as “the good brother” because Damon was the one that was disappointing his father and had a bad reputation. Therefore, the shame and the guilt, reputation for Stefan is everything, he is holding on so badly to the time he was human. As you can see from his diary he is so self-righteous to overcompensate his overwhelming guilt, he has to blame his dark side on others and Damon is his convenient target, and put himself on a pedestal, he puts Damon down to raise himself up, because otherwise he would have to confront his issues full front and he never did. That is what makes him a swinger between two polar opposite way or he is the self-righteous, entitled, judging, too good to be real Stefan, or he is the ripper of Monterey, tearing people apart because when you never learn control, never wanted to, always repress that side, that is what happens. We know in general when people are very repressed, they are going to break before or after, they are not balanced people. No other vampire is on bunny diet, only Stefan and that proves that is not sustainable. Stefan has to admit he is wrong, but will he ever? Damon knows that and he can see that the problem with his brother is psychological not physical, because when he has his humanity off and doesn’t feel anything, he can easily control himself. Stefan to be able to control himself will have to change entirely, will have to be self-aware, not blame others for his blood lust, and mature understanding that it’s ok not to be perfect, recognise that would help him stop this vicious circle. I believe Damon did a good thing, it’s a start, Stefan has to start to face his problems.

I am loving the progress happening with the platonic relationships in this show currently. I loved how Elena and Alaric starting to build this comfortable space within their relationship and understanding that they both can and should be looking out for each other because that's all they have got at this point. Meredith truly wasn't the villain at all in this case as you were thinking earlier and you were right; if there are too many clues pointing fingers at one person then it must not be them. Speaking about Stefan and Damon; firstly I love the flashbacks. Damon had left Mystic falls once the salvatore brothers had transitioned because he wasn't happy that he had been forced into becoming a vampire and the ways Stefan at the start was relishing in being one. Damon knew that Lexi should be able to guide Stefan and he had left so he had no clue whatsoever about the extent Stefan can go to if he had a drop of human blood in 1912 when he convinces him to feed on humans. In this episode, we get to see the brothers bonding and while Damon is keeping Stefan busy with the murder mystery, he was also trying to distract Stefan and at the same time get him to admit that him going cold turkey isn't the best idea because he was having a hard time. As much as vampires would like to be living like humans, it doesn't work that way. Lexi was Stefan's guide to being 'good' but she didn't stop drinking blood. Stefan's main issue is that he thinks he cannot control himself when he is feeding on humans but that doesn't mean he shouldn't try. Damon in the past let go over edge and he honestly admitted that although he didn't know the situation in 1912, he didn't even try stopping Stefan because he simply didn't want to because he was still having a hard time having any fun being a vampire. But now he has realised that he wants to help his brother learn how to gain control and not let the blood lust control him and like Damon said, Stefan did pretty good in this episode. He stopped when Damon stopped him. Of course, Stefan won't stop feeling guilty in one night but he can be happy about how the woman he was feeding on isn't dead and instead is living and was healed by Damon too. Seeing Elena at the same moment in that state was bad timing. But Elena also needs to remember that at the end of the day her boyfriend is a vampire. I understand she was shocked and must have misread the situation but it doesn't matter honestly. This was about Stefan and I don't see anything wrong in Damon trying to help his brother learn the art of moderation because at least once he can learn to control his blood lust, then it's an actual choice for him. And thankfully once Damon confessed about how he felt guilty about not helping Stefan in 1912, there was an understanding between the two. In Season 1, Stefan had said sorry to Damon for turning him because he needed his brother and today Damon is telling him that he is going to be the elder brother and is going to help him through this every step of the way. Elena unfortunately doesn't really get to any say in this because she doesn't know this life style. She is looking at from the outside and isn't in their shoes to understand things. I love these Salvatore brother conversations! Damon is okay with Elena hating or being upset with him because he is majorly only concerned about she being alive and not hating Stefan. Last episode that's exactly what mattered to him. He didn't let Stefan turn Abby into a vampire because he didn't want his brother to drown into guilt for another century and also didn't want Elena to hate Stefan. And mind you, Stefan accepts it. So those who call Damon selfish is out of question for me. These things only someone who is selfless would do and he does without bragging about it. The only thing that annoys me is that people take advantage of this and Damon allows it but is never appreciated. The other important conversation was Elena and Matt's conversation. I absolutely agree that Matt is a great friend and I adore him for being a great support. Stefan being Elena's safety net after her parents died and him turning up being this charming mysterious person was at first interesting for her but she didn't let go of him despite knowing he was vampire because she felt safe. He was a vampire and he wouldn't stop loving her or worse end up dying. It all makes sense and that's the beauty of the writing of this show. All the links close up. Speaking of Damon, he did sneak up on just like on the audience who ends up falling for him slowly and gradually because there is so much more to him than what meets the eye at first. She isn't able to shake away the feeling because it was never intended, it just happened. Both Elena and Damon were in love with separate people when this journey began but still they both have had ended up feeling strongly for each other. It wasn't planned or intentional. Whereas with Stefan and Elena, I would say most of their relationship was built on a lie despite having the cute aspect in their relationship such as flowers and date nights. Yes, he rescued her from the car crash but then spent months stalking her, learning about her and then deliberately placing himself in her life because he couldn't help himself, knowing fully well the danger he would be placing her in. I will go as far as saying that he used her fragile mental depressed state to his advantage cause had Elena still had her parents and her life together, she wouldn't have noticed Stefan in the same way instantly. As she clearly stated, the reason she fell for him that deeply was because he came into her life when she needed someone. That someone could've been anyone but then again it had to be Stefan (for reasons we all will find out). Whereas with Damon, In Season 1, yes we can argue that Damon was using Elena at times in his rivalry with Stefan but underneath that, you could see a genuine connection. More importantly, Elena knew who Damon was, she saw the real him before she could gain any romantic feelings towards him and it's not some fabricated version of him. She has seen him at his worst moments and very rarely been witness to moments of being selfless, caring and being the protector.

It is very interesting to me the dynamic Damon/Sage. He didn’t realise or he didn’t want to realise that feeding could be more than just quenching the thirst, because he was committed to Katherine and even after 50 years, his attitude “I’m spoken for” implies that he was faithful to her. Sage gave him another point of view on things them being immortal and therefore having to be alone for long time, even if they are in love should their love one being unavailable. In this universe feeding, sharing blood could be a very intimate, sexual thing, should you want to abandon yourself to those feelings. And seducing women that are “button up” as she called them, could have on them as well a strong emotional sexual effect. So basically, she thought Damon the next level sex. In this universe blood and sex are very much intertwine and connected.

I would say that Stefan enter in the relationship with Elena because she, being the doppleganger of Katherine and being the good one, gave him the opportunity to rewrite his own history, to a time he was human, when he was in love with Katherine before he discovered she was a vampire , before he was turned, before he became a ripper. Elena gave him the chance to feel human again, that is why he lied about himself, he retain so much information about himself. She was to big of an opportunity for him to pass on, that is why he stalked her and learn so much about her, not to make sure she wasn't Katherine, as he said, that wouldn't have take him months to ascertain, but to get to know her, to make sure that the seduction would be successful. Also she fits his standards of good doppelgänger, someone human, good and kind, that no matter what sustain his way of life, his pretending to be good and human as if it was the right way of being a vampire and not an unsustainable way of living that unleash terrible backlash and uncontrollable consequences.

Oh Absolutely! And I love 'the chance to rewrite history'!

Yeah I honestly am not a big fan of Sage especially with the way she was speaking about the women who are buttoned up and all. Damon was I suppose celibate until those 50 years because that's how he much he wanted to stay committed to Katherine or even her ghost who knows😂The only thing I can say Sage did good was that she taught him to not hate being a vampire so much although of course we know Damon misses being human; the thing with him though is that he knows he cannot go back to being human so better learn how to live as a vampire.

Patpet

Not a fan of Sage either, but as you said she was responsible to give Damon another point of view about being a vampire, that can be fun and sensual too, that does detracts from being committed in their hearts, being immortal gives you a different prospective on things. That is why Damon could manage to move on from his dreadful feeling of being stuck in a situation he never wanted and being bitter and resentfu to a sort of accettance of the new situation and try to find a way to make it bareble. After Sage he manage to have a better life. That is her only plus.

In the pilot, the song “Running up that hill” by Placebo was playing while Stefan was looking at Katherine's picture. A part of the song literally says, “getting to swap our places, “let's exchange the experience,” and “ let me steal this moment from you now.” Stefan looked at that picture twice before seeing Elena in the pilot alone. Later in episodes 4 and 11, we all saw that he kept that picture on a table in his bedroom, which was easily accessible to look at it any time he wanted. Now, why would Stefan do this? I agree with PatPet about how Stefan was trying to relive what he had with Katherine, but this time the experience is better since Elena is the “good” doppelganger. Elena is indeed good, but she is much more than a good person. It's a good idea to pay close attention to how Stefan describes people around him.

I love the conversation between Matt and Elena. Matt graciously listens to Elena without a judgemental attitude. A friend like Matt is a treasure. Most people want to give their opinion, but very few genuinely listen to what a person is saying. Maybe I am wrong, but I believe Matt figured out who Elena loves. Matt didn't say that the person who makes you feel safe is that one that stays in our hearts but rather the one that snuck into our hearts; that person can't be shaken. Right after this conversation between Matt and Elena, Stefan enters Elena’s home. Are the writers trying to tell us something? 🤣
