Making your own "hand-lettered" font sounds like one of those times when putting in some extra effort early on saves a LOT of time in the end. Great idea!

Well, he DID stand on the doorstep thinking for a bit, and one assumes he was expected. Plenty of time for the resident to time opening the door just right. If anything, he might have been getting impatient.
