In the June 2012 Dereche storm that swept through Virginia, we in the state capital city were without power for 10 days & I had a coworker further out who lost power for 14 days. But we were “lucky” in that it was just residential power outages. I just remember being shocked realizing how shit infrastructure was. RVA has since had multiple boil water notices in the past year. I lived in China for 3 years back in the mid 2010s. I lived in a smaller city near the North Korean border. I remember the first time a bus was late and there was a large crowd waiting. A bus pulled up, and the whole crowd held its breath, excited to get on. It slowed, then pulled away, not even stopping for people. I remember I instinctively held my breath, waiting for people in the crowd to get upset, complain, shake their head, etc. but instead, conversation simply resumed. There was laughter, chatting, and not an ounce of anxiety. That was the moment I realized what it was like to be among a happy group of people. I have never felt that in the US among strangers. (I am from the US)
