The man's hands were probably chemically burned. The chemicals used to change the color of fire are mostly metals and they make the fire burn hotter. Even a simple sparkler can burn at 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.

I appreciate that you all are running through this one. Given the pacing it works as a binge imo. Also lol at the comment in the beginning “I wonder if they’re setting up jinshi and Maomao”. Yeah it’s funny you bring that up

As far as your discussion before the show started. I think a lot of Maomao's interactions with Jinshi are influenced by her being partially raised in a brothel. She's seen men like Jinshi before who use their charisma and physical attractiveness to get things and i think she's more aware of most of the women in the rear palace of how dangerous men can be for women in this world. Her attitude towards love and relationships in general is a big theme in the show.

The way Jinshi looked and how genuinely concerned he was for Maomao when she was explaining her freckles, that’s how you know my guy truly cares for her.

I want to say something about the young concubine but it might be too much of a spoiler even if it might be a minor detail.
