The comedy elements are enough to carry it in the first two seasons. The third season has more of the writing issues you're talking about, imo.

In terms of Romcoms it's just so eminently mediocre- I had hoped they'd watch a modern masterpiece of the genre like Dangers in my Heart or a classic like Toradora, but I'm sure that'll happen eventually.
