Great timing, thank you! Can’t wait to start the ride

Narutoanime16

Think the first time I ever heard of Chernobyl was in middle school or high school but yeah there's idk how many documentaries and the area is still radiated like it will remain uninhabitable for many more years

Thank goodness this is so great

Joe Williams

What are we doing to these poor girls?! ...I can't wait to watch.

Putting stress and distress for our entertainment 😂😂

So glad you guys are starting this show. This is probably my third time rewatching. Short and sweet series

Chernobyl was 40 yeas after Hiroshima/Nagasaki; and there were a whole bunch of radiation related accidents, from the "Demon Core" to the various civilian populations damaged by US and USSR nuclear bomb testing in between the two, so by the time of the show the effects of radiation were well documented (at least among nuclear scientists and related military personnel).

Ivan

I was Chernobyl baby, my mom was pregnant when radiation cloud came here. But they said it wasn't strong anymore. Few years later and child Ivan had tumor and spent year in hospital. Might be might not be from radiation ofc.

First time watching, I can already see why this series has strong praise. I agree Sam. The cinematography is very nice, which probably makes the horror more prominent.

Finally! Can't wait to see the next episodes, thanks

As for the Iodine pills: When radioactive material decays it doesn't just stop existing, it breaks down into new elements (as well as different forms of radiation), which can themselves be radioactive and decay further. A radioactive isotope (isotope = variant of an element with a different number neutrons) of Iodine is a common occurrence in radioactive fallout. Unfortunately, the human body, specifically the thyroid, is really good at binding Iodine and it doesn't differentiate between radioactive and non-radioactive Iodine when doing so. This basically means that the person that this is happening to is slowly being poisoned by radiation impossible to get rid of, which probably leads to eventual death from thyroid cancer in the optimal outcome and to a much faster death in worse outcomes. The Iodine pills are a precaution; the idea being that you just give the human body as much non-radioactive Iodine as possible so that it will bind that one instead of the radioactive variant. Since the nuclear fallout from Chernobyl swept over multiple countries and caused increased cases of thyroid cancer in primarily children, there are actually some European Countries that nowadays have regulations that schools are obligated to stock a basic supply of Iodine pills in case another nuclear disaster happens.

Yeah it's a good show. Just keep in mind it's dramatized, but still good way to learn somewhat what the Chernobyl power plant accident was.

BT

One episode a week is fine; these episodes are long, and there's a lot to take in.

One of the things about the first episode is that it takes you through what happened immediately after the initial "event" but unless you already know it doesn't explain. It does in future episodes, as well as telling you what happened leading up to it. It's an interesting choice because I think it gives you a sense of shock and confusion which mirrors what some of the characters are feeling. But it does mean you don't necessarily understand what you're seeing right away. It makes it more interesting on a re-watch too because now you see things where they are making bad decisions. Speaking of which, I think there's a lot of denial but it's also the fact that it's a huge blame culture so they are a) trying to play down what has happened and b) make sure they deflect the blame.

Watching for the first time with ya'll

Dune

It's as simple as the soviet union can do no wrong. They werent thinking of safety and precaution. Just that soviet union can't admit it fucked up.

Pascal

Yeah they fucked up pretty good. They were basically running a test and they just piled up bad decisions like shutting down all the emergency stop systems
