Hannibal Ascencio

This episode of Chernobyl has always stuck with me because it shows how the consequences of the disaster affected people all over the world. A large amount of powdered milk from Ireland was contaminated with radioactive material. After being rejected by other markets, some of it ended up in Mexico, where it was distributed through CONASUPO, a government-owned food distribution agency. One of my aunts drank that milk while she was pregnant, and her son was born without hands or feet, only stumps. Despite everything, my cousin managed to overcome many challenges. He's doing really well now and has even become an influencer, but that's not really the point of this story. It just goes to show that the consequences of a tragedy like Chernobyl weren't limited to Europe. They reached people all the way here in Mexico, too.

Interesting fact: the sound design and score were made using real sounds from the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania which has the same reactor design as Chernobyl

Agreed, this awful event should have been discussed more in school’s curriculum, especially to those born around this time. This was a world altering experience.

We are so fucked up as a humans. We need a great tragedy to install safety protocols and precautions. After Titanic entire industry of shipbuilding changed (guess it needed lots of rich folks to die first). Nightclub in boston where aprox. 500 people died, changed laws how doors and exits should be like. And here we have Černobil that skyrocketed science around radiation poisoning, safety and other things involving radiation. Morgan and Sam were flight attendants (if i recall correctly), all rules you had to learn is cuz at some point some shit happened and you need to know how to combat it.

The crazy thing is legasov wasn't exaggerating with the radioactive timelines. Chernobyl is still uninhabitable to this day and probably still will be decades to come . Another thing is the clothes and gear that were removed from the firemen still sit in a pile in the hospital and are apparently still extremely radioactive. You can't even burn it without spreading more radiation.

I know nuclear energy seems super scary in this instance but it should be said that nuclear energy is the safest and least destructive form of energy we have.

Very true, a lot of things changed in the airline industry after 9/11. Now the cockpit is enforced with a bullet proof door, and many security checks -S

I remember you saying this before. You think our past history would better inform us on how future.

Jackie Gibson

1. This show is incredible at teaching people how devastating the Chernobyl incident was. 2. To answer Morgan's question about graphite bunkers, graphite doesn't block radiation, the carbon inside simply slows down neutrons to allow nuclear fission to occur more sustainably, in fact over time the carbon starts activating and becomes extremely radioactive hence why the fireman's hand burned so fast after touching it in episode 1. So if you had a bunker made of graphite, it might help for a bit, but eventually the entire bunker would become super irradiated and you would die of severe radiation poisoning.

Ivan

Yup, probably best energy right now

Taking iodine constantly would most likely lead to having too much of it in your body, which can cause stuff like hyperthyroidism, so it's really not something you want to be doing unless you have reason to believe that you're getting exposed to relevant amounts of radioactive iodine

The guys who put water in the open core survived for now . You can see them in the hospital.

Thing to remember is this is communist Russia. Going against party policy/official story or speaking negatively about a party member can have bad repercussions for you. Why you see alot of people playing down/disbelieving things they potentially know are bad to save their necks in the long run Also at the end of each episode after the credits there is usually a brief explanation and inside the episode that can be pretty informative

Dooly

You mean ‘uninhabitable?’ Inhabitable would mean it’s safe

Dune

Yeah lol I felt like I was using the wrong one but didn't feel like looking it up. Thanks.

ringa

yep, its a great thing that scientists around the world studied this incident and others so much to make nuclear energy as safe as it is today. its really impressive.

Tyler

Its crazy to think that everything those who lived there left behind that day is all still there exactly where they left it

Andrew Curcillo

Burning fossil fuels actually releases more nuclear radiation per watt produced than nuclear power plants.

Andrew Curcillo

the thing at the hotel with the glass was that he didn't want the glass that had been left face up to collect possible nuclear contaminated material, and instead wanted the face down recently washed glass.

Andrew Curcillo

This show is very good but it often does overstate the possible harms of nuclear energy for dramatic effect. the Fossil fuel industry kills millions every year, the highest ends of estimated deaths of the Chernobyl disaster don't even come close.
