Resubbed for this series

I always loved how throughout these first few eps, it's emphasized how the Servants need to keep their identity a secret because it can reveal their weaknesses ... and then here comes Iskandar crashing the party and shouting his name for everyone to hear lol

Anthony

They explain the Sakura thing a little in the first episode. Mage families can only pass their magic to one child so letting another family take in your child as their heir would be seen as a good thing for everyone involved. It's just that Zouken is a monster.

(no spoilers) so all servants are compelled by the grail upon summoning to listen to their master's will, even if they disagree with what they say or it goes against their morals, but only to a varying degree, based on the master that summoned them, the class they were summoned as, etc. If a weaker master summoned Saber she would also be weaker in general. the 3 knight classes, saber archer and lancer all boast high "magic resistance" as a parameter of their class and can resist masters' commands. the archer class can even further bc of a skill called "independent action" which allows them to almost ignore their master without a command spell

Dani, your bangs look awesome!

It's ok to look up heroes, after their names being revealed in the show. Just be careful of Fandom or Wikia pages for Fate, Grand Order or Type-Moon about the servants to avoid spoilers for the show. For Fate/Zero specifically, servant name reveals are less important since the story revolves around other stuff, but for example, for Fate/stay Night, servant names are huge spoilers and you should be extra careful when looking things up.

The Tosaka's and Mato's are powerful mage families, both Sakura and Rin have the potential to be super strong, but family tradition only one child can get the father's magic and rule book so Sakura had to be given away to stay strong. I feel the most sad for uncle in all this he's suffering just for Sakura and he has no help.

This true. If anything it might help them get more of general understanding of the characters.

Saber and Lancer where definitely flirting, it's in the subtext🤣🤣 And good eye, Morgan on clocking the ugly way Lancer's master treats him.

Tim

as an Irish dude im gonna be that guy and tell you the spear guys name is pronounced closer to "Dear-mid". just saying because its a common enough Irish name. I have watched this show in both sub and dub and the Japanese pronounce Diarmuid better

Your supposed to feel bad for Lancer. He is very tragic figure who is definitely going to break your heart. And don’t hate on the King of Heroes. Gilgamesh has legendary aura💛❤️

Sometimes a few of the heroic servants will randomly name drop other historical figures which have no relevance to the main plot, and will never be brought up again, but are just there to give extra backrground to their irl mythologies. In those cases, I think its fine to google a few names so you can get more context, but just add like "irl history" next to their names so you immediately get a quick wikipedia summary instead of an anime spoiler.

Yeah everyone’s cheating. I mean, they’re fighting over an all powerful wish granting device. Hell yeah I’d cheat too.

del

I get that you all don’t love Gilgamesh yet. But I promise one day he’ll steal your heart

Pochita

Ah yes, Alexsander our favourite pillager and rapist lol One of the favourite servants in this season but it's funny when you think about the real person behind the character. Also, not all Servants were real people, not sure about Gilgamesh but Arthur isn't historical figure (Ofcourse they are "real people of the past" in the show)

Glad Morgan is feeling better. Can’t wait for the peak in this week 🤗🤗

All the heroes are Mythological or historical people from real life so would even encourage looking up their stories from the real world it adds to the story

not really a spoiler, just some fun context. The summons change depending on what class they end up as. Not every hero can be summoned as any of the seven classes, but based on different achievements they had when they were alive, their legends can be reinterpreted as different classes. So Gilgamesh isnt always an archer, Alexander isnt always a Rider, etc. Pretty sure people like this current saber are always Saber though. Some of them have simple legends, some of them did many things in their lives and are known for different associations. Pretty sure another war Gil was summoned as a Caster. And it explains why this Rider made the comment about how he got his chariot. It wasnt so much him explaining its origin as him simply saying "oh yeah, I do own that thing, that explains why I was summoned as a Rider". If he was summoned in a different class, he most likely wouldn't have that chariot to summon. This matters because the class they currently are affects their personality to a certain extent, like Archer class is very independent and usually produce a version of that hero that is more likely to wander off whenever they want. Someone in the Rider class is known for being really fast, but also really loyal. Many classes also have more common stats they are known for. From memory, all I know is that Saber class on average have higher base stats than most other classes, but stats don't always let them overcome the special skills heroes have. The assassin class in this war has a unique ability that caused a group to be summoned instead of a single individual, but that doesnt mean assassin is always a group. And while assassin doesnt usually have high stats like some other classes, its important to know each class does have its way of being dangerous if they play to their strengths.

nah mate, let their personalities reveal themselves naturally. Their distaste is part of the process.

its been briefly mentioned in the show, but some lore to help you follow future conversations can help. In this world, there are different levels of magic. All characters, both masters and servants, as well as all mages, don't actually use "magic". When they talk about magical capability and spells, what they are really talking about is "magecraft". What's important to know is that magecraft and magic are not on the same level. Magic does exists, but its something every mage hopes to one day achieve by reaching "the source", and thats what most mages are after when they join a Holy Grail War. Magic essentially is the ability to alter the rules of reality itself, while magecraft is more standard spells like throwing a fireball or putting up a barrier. There are exceptions, some characters are special, but I'm talking about the over arching franchise here, not just this show. Magecraft is the power of man, magic is more like godlike power. Theres a bunch of separate forces at play outside the scope of this show, but with this being a prequel, its nice to simply know theres larger stakes at play outside the holy grail war. Like the reasons heroes can be summoned in the first place has more to do with magic than magecraft, but depending on how old a servant is, the more likely they have tricks that involve actual magic and not just simple magecraft. Magic basically died out in the modern age, and the Holy Grail is one of the few ways for anyone to attempt to bridge that gap. Heroes that can be summoned for this contest are basically those that had some unresolved desire or belief upon their original death. Not just anyone can be summoned. They have to be immortalized by humanity and ALSO have a reason for wanting to return.
