Royal Awakening | Page 7 - WIP (Patreon)
Content
Sketch – The composition of this page was already very clear in the first draft. It opens with the wolf waking up, and a couple of close-ups of his sleepy eyes. Then we move on to the dog's BJ, where I tried to create the animation. The final shot captures the moment of awakening, with the characters exchanging a sweet “good morning.”When I wrote the script, and the drafts of the pages (in June), I used Italian with some French words, to recall the show, but I eventually dropped that stylistic choice.
Definitive Sketch – In the final sketch, I refined the characters’ shapes and outlines, and slightly tweaked the panel layout. Personally, I prefer frames that are a bit tilted rather than perfectly straight—they add more rhythm and dynamism to the page. Of course, everything still needs to stay coherent with the scene’s visual language.
Lineart – At this stage, the comic didn’t even have a title yet... I had a few ideas floating around, but in the end I went with the phrase spoken by the wolf, it just felt right!
Flat Coloring – I have to admit, the wolf’s colors are quite tricky to handle—they’re very dark, I know the character is like that, but it made balancing the contrast a real challenge. I ended up tweaking the palette slightly to give him the right contrast with the setting and the dog.
Shadows and Highlights – Lighting the dog’s eyes is always a joy! It’s one of those little details that brings the whole scene to life.
