Welcome back, folks! I have to say, I really missed making these process posts. The last time was a lot of fun, and I truly appreciate your interest in following along!
It’s been a couple of years since I created Just Fairy Tales 2, where Luca and Pino made their first appearance. From the very beginning, I felt they had great potential, and that they deserved a comic entirely focused on them.
Before jumping into the sketch of the first page, I wanted to share a bit about the workflow I use when creating my comics. So, I always start with the plot: a short text that outlines the whole story, the characters, and the setting. Then I move on to the script, breaking down each page and describing every panel and shot. This step is incredibly helpful when I transition to the storyboard phase, where the comic truly starts coming to life. I designed the entire storyboard with printing in mind, working in double-page spreads (right and left), in case I needed full-page panels across both sides. 😉
For the first page, I needed a quick recap of the previous chapter. During the draft stage, I reused some old shots and created new ones, like the third panel, which this time is from the wolf’s point of view. I also wanted a strong close-up of Luca’s handsome face, visibly shocked after seeing Pino with his boner.
While refining the sketch, I decided to reorganize the flashbacks and place them inside a single thought bubble to make the sequence cleaner and easier to follow.
For the lineart, I chose the same style I used in the previous comics: a dry, crisp stroke with a subtle rough texture. In this phase, I brought back the original shots from JFT2 and adapted them to the new framing. For the coloring, I kept the same approach as the previous chapter: flat colors for the characters, with a small variation — in some areas of the fur I used a rough, slightly messy brush.
The rendering is done with just two layers:
a shadow layer (Multiply),
and an Overlay layer to add a bit of light to the characters’ faces.
These two layers will be my main tools for all the calmer scenes.
Finally, I complete the page layout by adding the page number, signature, and any necessary outlines (in this case, a white stroke around the speech bubble). If you have any questions about any of the steps, I'd be happy to answer them!
