Hey everyone! I'm going to launch AA on Royal Road pretty soon - 2 or 3 weeks. I've been using Midjourney to make a temporary book cover, but I commissioned a human-made one because I like supporting humans. The problem is, I'm not sure I like the new art better. In fact, the people I've asked say the Midjourney one is better. Let's see what you all think. Additionally, if you don't like either option, please share your ideas for a cover you would prefer. I might be commissioning a new one.

Option A, Midjourney:

Option B, human artist:

I like B for the action sence but prefer A on the detail work.

Chloe Root

Oof. This is really hard because I'm pretty against AI art but it *does* look better than the artist's. I'm not sure if it's viable financially but my preference would be to get a commission from a different artist, obviously that feels kinda bad for "wasting" money but..... It's what I think the best solution is.

Plum Parrot

If heard feedback like this from others. Any idea what you don't like or would prefer?

Sébastien Kingsbury

Is "a different human artist" an option? Because yeah, that cover is not the nicest. On the other hand, fairly successful author so I kinda dislike the AI option purely on principle

Dawnstrider

I get the delimma. We need to support human artists, because AIs don't create, they regurgitate, but, objectively speaking, the Midjourney cover is the more compelling image. (And not just for the shallow and completely innapropriate fact that the AI made Andy an absolute hotty.)

Ryan Linus

Have human draw the better cover?

Mr. J

I like A much better, but he should have his spear. Seems a key part of his identity so far.

Plum Parrot

Yes, I will probably get a new human to do this art. I'm annoyed, for the loss of money, obviously, but I wanted to give that artist a shot. It's hard to find people you can trust online.

Plum Parrot

Yeah, it's annoying, but I'll probably commission a new one. Just wish I could find someone I could count on to produce something actually better, lol.

David H

Midjourney but add a spear.

Daniel

The composition is much better in the AI-generated one. Andy fills more of the cover, rather than almost getting pushed off as in the artist's version. I also prefer the more generic "young man running for his life"-theme over the battle scene, to be honest, but I might be in the minority on that one. Other than some small AI-artifacts, I honestly think the first one is overall pretty good. Maybe start over? Andy posing with the broom handle against that first mutated neighbor, maybe.

Reno

I hate to say it, but we're screwed if we got to the point where AI is better than humans *for however much it cost*. Because I'm sure you can get something amazing for more money, but as it is, between these two options, there's really no contest. Not to mention that tweaking the MJ one might be easier if you have the seeds etc. What a world we live in. The MJ cover "pops" more. It's brighter and more catchy. But yeah it does look a bit midjourney-like.

Ryan Linus

It’s so bad it’s almost good, which fortunately misleads about the content so you just can’t use it. Also feel like he likely used earlier AI at some point at least in the process…

Reno

And it's less representative of the story so far. More generic I guess?

Samuel Broaddus

I think maybe a switch of artists for human made cover is in order, unless said human can put more detail into their work. Ive seen absolutely brilliant drawing on DeviantArt when I used to browse...not sure if that site is still ongoing as that was quite a few years back. I too think humans are better to support if possible, just not at your expense if work isnt high quality.

Plum Parrot

Certainly, there are clearly different types of talent when it comes to creating book covers, and I think I need to shop around a little more. It's just hard to make those connections. Also, since this is for Royal Road, I'm not trying to spend a thousand bucks, hehe.

InLucidReverie

A new artist would definitely be worth considering. For now the mid journey one will work though.

I haven't started the series yet (I like to kick off stuff I'm going to be reading serialized with a bit more of a binge) so feel free to take my opinion with a grain of salt, but honestly neither cover really grabs me. It's likely I'll jump into it eventually because I've been a fan of everything else I've read of yours, but neither of those covers are moving it up my queue. I am firmly anti-AI slop though. At present I'm mostly here for Victor and Vainglory right now. I really really don't want this to come across as some sort of self-righteous rant or threat to do what I want or I boycott, but I've got a long to be read list and ultimately using AI over real artists for your books probably does play at least some factor in whether I take a leap into another series or just let the membership lapse once the two series I'm currently invested in run their course.

Plum Parrot

Don't worry I'm in the same boat with you. I like the midjourney cover I made, but I don't want to use it. That's why I paid a guy to make the other one. And I'm already in talks with another artist to make another one. So yeah, when it comes to artistic things, I try to support real humans.

TDarwin

I'm also in the "neither" camp. I don't think the scene captures the story very well. I think a cover with Andy prominent is good but I'd like to see some of the other characters like Lucy. This feels like a kingdom building apocalypse story so far, and Andy is leading a community. I think a leader-y theme with Andy and his spear in a more conquering cover pose

Johnathan

I agree, that to not support a human option is criminal in itself. However, the human option needs to be much better…

Matt Rubinstein

humans can be harder to prompt compared to AI - maybe try a different prompt
