Holly's reunion with Jill ends up being a reunion with Ryan! Things between the are...tense, to say the least.

These 29 new pages of Phase 9 will have to last us until next month when we'll have more Jack & Jill. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Hmmm... seems Mr. Davis's Decrees could just as well be Mistress Holly's Decrees. Is Holly falling further into victimhood?... or will she be getting what she deserves?... or maybe a little bit of both? And congratulations for going over 2,000 pages, Emory.

Tim

I think Holly changed drastically from who she was during Holly's Tale and who she became after that. I don't know why she got the tattoo above her left breast, but something happened after Holly's Tale that caused her to so conspicuously display her loyalty to Xu after she and Jason were recaptured in Italy. Perhaps Emory might explain the origin of that tattoo and the reason behind her apparent loyalty to Xu in a future episode... and maybe give us hope that she can revert to the girl she was in Italy with Jason.

Gemma

Great chapter and reminder of how much more advanced Jill’s compassion and empathy compared to that of Holly. It will be interesting to see if Holly gains some insights and reflective growth from Jill’s care and humanity. I also would like to comment on how pretty Ryan is becoming even when he is angry and threatening. Great psychological insights into various characters and Dr Xu’s business practices. Lovely realistic detail see ing Davis’s decrees as part of 101 ‘training unit for ‘Handlers.’

Tim

Jill is also a victim (and it may turn out that she becomes the most victimized of all the "conversions" to set foot in Clinic 12). But look at the difference in how Jill and Holly interact with Ryan. Both are victims and both react very differently. Victimization does not explain or justify Holly's treatment of Ryan and countless other "acquisitions." I truly hope that Holly will earn redemption, but playing the victim card or offering apologies or words of regret alone will not get her the redemption she needs. She needs to ACT, and I feel fairly confident (or at least hopeful) that she will before the 45 hours of Phase 9 run out.

Brandi

I'm not sure why but I love Holly haha

Maggie Heels

I didn't read all the comments yet... I love reading comments under Emory's work... just finished reading and read couple first comments... And I think I know who shot Mr Xu... it wasn't Davis as I suggested in previous update... :) I am sure for 99.99%

Jade Diaz

Good for Jill ripping into Holly.

Sapphire Starlight

Wow, Emory that was an incredible chapter, can't wait to see the next one!

Tim

I think you may be right, even though it's not the person I originally suspected, either.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Tim and Bos! Great comments, as always. 💕 Davis was the first handler (of Holden / Holly and then the initial batch of toys) and is the architect behind Clinic 12. So, initially, Holly definitely used the techniques used against her in the transitions of others. And it's true Jill has more kindness and empathy than Holly. To be fair, though, Jill isn't under pressure to deliver a "product." But imagine if Jill was truly being forced to make "Connie" a reality. Would her respect and kindness be effective in this? Doubtful. Even Mason was chastised for being "too nice" to the mostly compliant Jack. And Holly truly wants to stop Jill from becoming a handler and basically turning into her. Holly knows she wasn't always the kindest, although she believes she tried her best and the girls we've met who called Holly their handler seem to like her much better than those who had Davis as a handler. It's important to also remember that when Holly failed to transition somebody, they'd either become a number under "Attrition" or be sent to Davis. So, she couldn't afford to always be kind because if she didn't get results their life only got worse. But Tim is right... Redemption isn't words. And YES to 2,000 pages! 🤯

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Alyson! 💕 Holly is definitely...distracted. We even saw it before she got on the yacht in Angela's office. She seemed concerned that Angela was coming to the island for the first time. Was it just because she thought Angela might see her differently once she saw the results of Holly's "job?" 🤔

Emory Ahlberg

You can feel bad for her, Thomas. I do! Holly's tattoo is absolutely a symbol of a complicated loyalty. It's a mark of survival but also a reminder of her capitulation. After her recapture with Jason, she was faced with an ultimatum that shook her to the core. She could either embrace her new identity and live under Xu's thumb, or face a grim and likely short future. The tattoo was part of her acceptance of that new reality. But as you've all pointed out, the depth of Holly's character is such that she's not just one thing or another. She's both victim and participant, a person who's had to make impossible choices in an environment designed to strip away agency and humanity. Her loyalty to Xu is complex. It's part survival strategy, part Stockholm Syndrome, and perhaps even part genuine gratitude for the twisted sense of purpose he's given her. But deep down, there's still that spark of who she was in Italy with Jason (now Janelle) - a person capable of love, sacrifice, and perhaps even redemption.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Gemma! 💕 To me, it's fascinating to explore the contrasts and parallels between characters, especially Jill and Holly. They've both been shaped by their experiences with Second Dawn, but they've responded in very different ways. Jill's innate empathy which was buried as Jack has now blossomed despite everything she's endured. As for Holly, she's both strong and vulnerable. Her past decisions will undoubtedly continue to haunt her. But they DO haunt her, and I think that means something. I actually created "Davis's Decrees" a long time ago, but officially including them on the page was fun / horrifying. 😬

Emory Ahlberg

I love Holly, too! 💕 To me, she's definitely one of those characters that, despite her flaws and the morally gray area she occupies, has a certain charm and depth that is endearing. I love her because her complexity makes her human. She's been through so much and has shown such resilience and adaptability. It's hard for me not to root for her to find some kind of peace or redemption.

Emory Ahlberg

Maggie, I always look forward to your insights! You have a sharp eye for the twists. The plot is definitely thickening (even more!), and almost every character has their own motive - but maybe not the opportunity. 😉

Wojtek

I agree with the previous speaker, the entire Clinic 12 is literally strewn with cameras and Holly enters the only room where the camera is off, instead of first checking where Jill is or asking someone. Very interesting chapter, my favorite pages are 10 and 15, the first is when Ryan makes excuses for Holly. I also like history but as some may know, more the history of inventions (it's full of interesting facts) , the second page with a graphic on the training that Jill was at I can't say whether to be happy or sad about 2014 in Second Dawn (last column of the sheet to not spoil)!

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Jade! 💕 That was a crucial moment for Jill. Despite her own circumstances, Jill isn't passive - she's becoming more assertive and protective of those she cares about. Holly used to be among them, but now she knows Holly is a liar and a manipulator. Of course, Holly's biggest lie to Jill was way back in Phase 5, when she told Jill to embrace her changes so that she could get close to Xu. Holly insinuated there was a plan. Holly gave her hope. And that hope, it seems, has been taken away. In fact, it was never even real. It's one thing to struggle against the harsh realities of life at Clinic 12, but it's another to have the rug pulled out from under you by someone you trusted. The hope Holly offered was a lifeline for Jill, something to cling to in the dark hours. Now? Jill can only imagine Holly, Mason, Xu, Davis, drinking coffee in a boring conference room and discussing the best way to "motivate" her into acceptance. Holly really did help her self-actualize into owning her womanhood. But if their relationship was a lie, is that called into question, too? Either way, Jill has realized she has always been alone here - at least until now. She has a genuine and real relationship with Adele and Ryan because it's one she's creating and defining for herself.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Joe! 💖 And my friend Tim just reminded me that I've crossed the 2,000-page mark with Jack & Jill. 🤯 Well, onwards and upwards.

Maggie Heels

Why this is already over 2000 pages and I kinda feel like we're at the beginning something wonderful? I know Emory will finish this story someday but I wish it could be continued... not all revivals of movies or tv series are good but... I am certain that this story will not have such problem... and continuity would be greatly appreciated ❣️❣️❣️

Jade Diaz

Can't believe no one has really commented on the banal statistical analysis of the horrible things Second Dawn does to its "acquisitions." Gina seems awfully blase about the entire situation. And for sure, that piece of shit Davis just sees a bunch of numbers on a spreadsheet, not hundreds of broken lives and thousands of broken social ties and family members in mourning (or worse.)

Robertlouis

Holly…is a very lucky girl. And it’s very much down to Jill’s gentle and compassionate treatment of Ryan, unlike Holly’s brutal deception of countless companions and, much worse, toys, as she sent them thoughtlessly on to their fates. Yes, she decided that doing whatever was necessary for her own survival, regardless of the consequences for others and the moral effects on herself, should be her absolute priority, but it’s far too late now to start showing regret after the hundreds of lives that she’s ruined. You can’t claim redemption for yourself after you’ve denied it to your victims.

ckarya

I can understand the comments from readers who only go by the story, but when they read Emory's responses, I don't understand why they still see Holly as evil.... But hey, that's the fun and the beauty and what only a Great Story can achieve: that there are different arguments and opinions about both the story and the characters. I see Jill and Holly as Ying and Yang, but not in the good/bad sense. But rather in the outcome of their 'conversions'. Holly was the first boy to be converted, there was no plan, nor did the handlers have any experience. Nevertheless, she 'created' a more 'benevolent' branch of Second Dawn: The Coven, which takes care of Companions who are treated more 'humanely' than toys. Outwardly, Holly is a strong and assertive person, but inwardly she is broken because her 'conversion' is not cemented. She is afraid and remorseful because she knows she is weak and that is why she agreed to stay at Xu's side and work for him. Jill, is the other side of the coin; she appears weak and submissive on the outside, but inside, as she demonstrates, she is strong and assertive...and empathetic, which makes her loving and caring. Because Jill, in her 'conversion', had a guide who gave her hope (even if it was a lie), helped her to have a self-confidence that no one gave her when he was Jack, and who nurtured and cemented her 'conversion' --> Holly. Jill is Holly 2.0. Because of this, and despite the 'screw-ups' Holly has made over the years, I see Holly as more of a victim than a villain. On the other hand, the remaining 46 hours are a long time, I think we still have to wait to guess who shot Xu, I don't think Emory is going to 'reveal' us the hero or heroine... or villain... or even that the shooting is particularly relevant to the resolution of the story (everything seems to indicate that it is)... I think there are still many twists and turns in these 46 hours!

Tim

I do hope that it's not too late for Holly to earn redemption, but it may be out of reach because of the sheer magnitude of her sins (especially the unwilling "acquisitions," such as Ryan and more than 100 others, more so than her work as a handler). Perhaps the only fitting act of contrition that might earn Holly her redemption would be for her to somehow orchestrate or be instrumental in the downfall of Second Dawn and its patrons to such an extent that ALL of the organization's victims would be granted their freedom AND be very well compensated for the damage the organization had done to them. She also needs to turn her own life around and focus her efforts on truly helping others to achieve their best lives possible.

Tim

Holly may not be inherently evil, but she is inherently weak and selfish. She does evil things (procuring over 100 mostly innocent victims) and uses her sense of victimhood to rationalize her evil acts. In her mind, the ends (her relative freedom, safety and well-being) justify the means (the entrapment, forced feminization and coerced enslavement of complete strangers who happen to fit a physical and psychological profile developed by rich and powerful men seeking to dominate their victims).

Sapphire Starlight

Whoa, 2000 already, Congratulations that's a huge milestone! 🥳

The diffusion of the sunlight through the window panes on page #4, and the dual lighting on Ryan's libidinous new feminine form. That's cinematic mastery. The distorted reflections from the cracked mirror on page #5 that still manage to give us two wonderful, clear views of Holly's perfect "pecs". 👍 Holly's sexy curves on pages #7, #9, #10, mouthwatering, and presenting such a contrast to Jill's full-figured flawlessness. I love how you didn't succumb to the temptation of making Xu's sex goddesses carbon-copies of each other from the neck down. The foreshortened, aggressive perspective on Ryan's right arm, the clenched left fist, separated by the beautiful expanse of those big tits of his, make page #11 tell such a story. Pages #14 through #30, "Jill Fest"! Hooray! Page #14, another 10,000 word deal. The utterly feminine posture, the perfect makeup, the skin-tight, red slacks, and most of all, the "come fuck me" heels compose a novelette. Jill could have chosen to wear flats, but is instead in footwear that not only looks enticing on its own, but makes her callipygian endowments appear even more seductive. Page #25...Ziiipp...Boinngg! Page #27, Someone has become quite graceful and well adjusted to ambling about atop stiletto heels... Page #29...Thank you...

Robertlouis

It’s not so much the emergence of two “camps” in the comments, as two very different ways of looking at the key characters in the tale, I guess, and rather than see things develop into an argument, it’s probably better to respect everyone’s views. And in the end, if there’s such a thing as a casting vote, it surely belongs to our esteemed author - Emory will decide on the respective fates of Holly and Jill, and we know from the huge amount of psychological profiling and research effort that she puts into her characters that she’ll get it absolutely right in the end. I’m not buttering you up, Emory, I’m being genuinely sincere. I have complete faith in your judgment.

Robertlouis

Thank you, findesiecle, for your finely observed comments on Emory’s art. I was too taken up in this episode’s psychological depths and twists, especially those involving Ryan, to take note, and I’m so glad that you did.

findesiecle

I, too, love Emory's plotting, story pacing and, of course, her compelling dialog. However, I always keep in mind that words are easily used to disguise someone's true agenda. We use words to tell lies to ourselves! To likewise contort one's bearing, posture, gestures and facial expressions is far more difficult. Emory gives us marvelous insights about the true psychological state of the characters with each page, wordlessly. Plus, I am rendered helpless even by drawings of busty, beautiful blondes and Emory knows that... 🤣

Robertlouis

Hannah Arendt’s chilling phrase about Eichmann at his trial, the clerical architect of the holocaust: “the banality of evil.” Gina takes pride in the bureaucratic efficiency of what she’s doing without even for a moment considering the effects on the individuals involved. That’s the true horror of Xu’s island and Clinic 12. It’s the dozens of Gina’s in the minor roles who make the horror happen.

Emory Ahlberg

Excellent points, Jade and Robert. Xu is a businessman, first and foremost. Also, I thought an exclusive resort / business retreat would be the most comfortable "environment" for the multi-millionaires and billionaires who are part of Second Dawn. To me, the veneer of a corporate reality is, hopefully, terrifying in its mundanity.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Joe and Maggie! Honestly, a little hard to believe... Half Sisters will be there soon enough, as well. 😁

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Wojtek! Holly did ask Davis where Jill was, and he said he's not tracking her anymore because she's 'on her own.' And Holly didn't realize the cameras would be off in Jill's room. A combination of bad luck and distraction. For the last column... unfortunately "attrition" is corporate-speak for dead, not escaped. 😔

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you all for your insightful comments! CK, I love your perspective on Holly and Jill as two sides of the same coin. I agree! They represent different responses to trauma (and transformation). But I'm also with you that I think her response to all this is understandable. It's hard to imagine the fear and torment she went through, being the first man to undergo this and having nobody to help her even understand what was happening. Was the formation of 'the coven' her way of coping? Carving out a little piece of the hell of the island that she could control? Either way, it seems to be Xu's main interest. He has said the toys are basically just to keep people off his back for the 'weirdness' of his operation. And Tim: Your point about Holly's need to act rather than just express regret is spot on. Redemption in this world requires more than words—it demands actions that counterbalance the wrongs done. Holly's internal conflict and her past decisions will shape her path forward, but whether she can achieve redemption... well that remains to be seen.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Fin! I really love your observations. It's honestly wonderful to see the artwork resonate with you. 💕 Page #11 is also one of my favorites! I must admit I really love Jill's "corporate" look here... She's obviously trying to make an impression. And she succeeds for sure!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Robert! 💕 For me, it's beyond fun to see such an engaging discussion happening. I absolutely love the interpretations and emotional investments in the characters. And, sure, I'm the author... But I also believe readers views are ultimately just as important (and usually far more interesting lol)

Emory Ahlberg

LOL! Thank you again! I do think the expressions / poses of the characters are key, and sometimes what is missed in other comics (not to toot my own horn). And I want the emotions to feel as real as possible... Fin, you're not alone in your "weakness," I can assure you. 😂

sketchyqueen

been a while since i’ve had a chance to catch up on everything emory! excited to binge and wow what a start!

Emory Ahlberg

Oh yay! I'm glad you found some time, Nina! I can't wait for you to catch up. 💖
