The morning after his first night out, Taylor trades his hoodie for a bold new look at MIT orientation—and discovers that being seen might not be so terrifying after all.

Well, this was supposed to be a nice, tight little chapter but it turned into 6,000 words. Taylor's got a lot to figure out, and apparently he's going to drag us all along for the ride. Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy!

I like this character !

Wonderful chapter ❣️❣️❣️

Omagathief

Wow!! What a chapter 😲. I love all the subtle quotes to the perceived “nerdy” things like Pokémon and star wars 😁

Gemma

Great chapter. I can sense both the anxiety Taylor is experiencing as well as the thrill he is also feeling of passing.

I am loving this series. The art is super cute. Taylor is a cutie for sure, but as is so often with your work Emory it's the story, the characters that are compelling. I am in love with Taylor and Abigail's friendship and as for Will Taylor HAS to get to know him better!!. cant wait for the next part. X

Claire

I really love this series. When I got to college, I wanted to reinvent myself. I imagine a lot of people with complicated lives did. That didn't work out. Maybe I needed an Abigail! She's a powerhouse. You create such believable characters. When's your novel? I'd love to read it!

Robertlouis

Like everyone else, I’m loving this series. The art is excellent as always, and the new style is highly entertaining. What stands out, however, is the quality of the writing, which has to do most of the heavy lifting in this format. It really is terrific. In the majority of your comics, of necessity, you have to rely on dialogue to convey your message, but in this story 90% it’s plain narrative. That said, the interactions between Taylor and Abigail are just delightful. I’m still sticking with “he” for Taylor for the time being, because his egg remains resolutely uncracked, despite all Abigail’s well-meaning efforts to pull him across to the distaff side. And, of course, if and when the shell does finally crack, will he/she be straight, lesbian or bi? All very intriguing, exciting and great fun.

Ellen Mellor

That was so sweet.I love how she is slowly cracking her own egg through the Use of "SCIENCE!" And her relationship with Abigail is adorable. And, as ever, I am loving your artwork. You make Taylor look so perfect in her 'futch' outfit. Possibly even cuter than her party dress. I am really looking forward to the next installment. 💜

Samantha Louise

This was really fantastic. Love Abigail showing Taylor there is more to womanhood than bubblegum princess and helping them figure themself out. (She just has no idea how much Taylor has to figure out.)

Jade Diaz

Abigail, like all of the other women in this story, never takes no for an answer. And for that, she belongs in the forcefemme hall of fame.

Thomas Tolliver

I feel a bit racist for immediately picturing Will as a big black dude. 🤯

Jade Diaz

The truth is even with a more art heavy style, her episodes have been scripted perfectly. Emory is a very very good writer, period, full stop.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Maggie! I had a lot of fun writing them. 😊

Emory Ahlberg

Yay! Thank you, Omaga. 😊 Yeah, I'm having fun sneaking as much of my favorite nerdy references into the story as possible hehe

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Gemma! Poor Taylor is experiencing a whole huge bag of mixed feelings...but definitely loving not being in the spotlight for the "wrong" reasons anymore!

Crewchick

Emory late the the party because, well..., life! But I know you understand. So let me add to the praise, great episode with a lot of character development, great dialog and presentation of multiple avenues this story can go down next. I am particularly intrigued by the rowing connections with Will and the possible prospect of Taylor being coaxed into going out for the MIT Women's Crew Team. I know last year we discussed on and off line about the possibility of a future story with a crew theme or element to it. Not sure if this is it or not, but you have my interest and excitement piqued.

Crewchick

I do have one technical detail I can't figure out. How is Taylor concealing his beard? Yeah, I get it "he shaves". But unless Taylor has some type of facial alopecia, is taking some kind of hormone that slows facial hair growth, or even if he naturally has a thin and slow growing beard, he is going to have at least the slightest stubble after 24 hours. Something that might go unnoticed as a guy, but as a girl with a roommate applying make-up to your face, would be hard not to notice. So far Taylor has taken two showers and no sign of shaving. And don't get me started on whether there is a mirror in the shower or Taylor might be having to explain unusual cuts on his face each day. I know some women get their upper lip waxed, but I can't imagine a man waxing his whole face. Ouch!!! And I doubt Taylor and his mother could afford facial electrolysis. Nor would I think Taylor would consider it, even if he could afford it, for just one semester. Not that I think Taylor is the type to ever want to grow a beard, it is a pretty ubiquitous male physical characteristic. Forgoing it for the rest of his life just to get through one semester, along with the cost, seems like an awful steep price for one semester of school. I am sure you have some amazing explanation based on science and medicine or something that will be like, "yeah, that makes perfect sense". One thought that has passed through my mind because of this, the near perfect breasts, and how calm Taylor's mom seems to be with Taylor dressing and living as a girl for a semester, is that perhaps, since we have not yet seen Taylor's genitals is that perhaps Taylor is somehow hermaphrodite, with elements of both genders and that maybe the breasts and a lack of facial and body hair is a result of his/her female hormones. And that maybe, the Mom has been unable to explain this to Taylor out of fear of what it might do to him after the loss of his father. And how much he looked up to his father and was devoted to him.

Jade Diaz

“Intersex” is the preferred word for such a condition

Ryan

Emory. I want you to know that I really love💝 your stories. You're so talented. I'm a big fan. Now this story too. From the beginning you are sucked in. I just can't believe how you do this again.

Ryan

My mistake. In my opinion your the most talented storyteller at this platform in this genre.

SingularCurve

Taylor my girl of many looks, you are doing fabulously. I know it is scary but you got this!! And that look, in this episode, Goddess I wish I could have pulled that off in early university!! Butch Metal/Goth/Punk, mnnn amazing! You are going to do fine once you learn to control your anxiety and live a little.

SingularCurve

Being coercively assigned male, I never really did grow much facial hair. With the amount of estrogens in Taylors system to grow breasts as large as described, the testosterone may have been suppressed and beard growth may never have started for Taylor. Beards are more of an expression of hormonal development/wash during puberty and sometimes take years to develop, if they ever do for many with a male hormonal balance. Just my speculation here.

SingularCurve

I would classify the outfit as more of a soft butch instead of a futch outfit, but I formed my fashion opinions in the early 90s when Grunge was first coming into style. The outfit is more punk or motorcycle mama than anything imo

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Crystal! I really wanted Taylor and Abigail's friendship to be this whirlwind of unexpected support (and enthusiasm). Abigail is like that friend who kicks down the door to your carefully constructed comfort zone, drags you out, and somehow you end up having the time of your life, even if you’re terrified, lol. And Will! After years of Malcom, Taylor’s so conditioned to expect the worst from that 'type' of guy. Will’s just… nice. And I think that kindness is going to be a really confusing for Taylor as he tries to figure out who he is in this new "world" of MIT...

Emory Ahlberg

Aw, thank you, Claire! Yeah, that desire to reinvent yourself in college is so real. I think for a lot of us, especially if we've had hard journeys in trying to accept ourselves (which means something different for everyone), it feels like a chance to shed an old skin. With Taylor, I wanted to explore that but layer it with the immense pressure of his secret and the scholarship. It’s less a reinvention by choice and more one of necessity, which is obviously a whole different kind of psychological mindfuck. Abigail is the best... just this burst of vibrant, unapologetic energy that Taylor absolutely needs because he’s so used to making himself small. And yes, I'm actually expanding Anywhere but Boring into a novel. I'm almost done! Taylor Made will be after. 😊

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks so much for the kind words, Robert! I’m really happy you’re enjoying the art and the narrative format. It's really refreshing. Not only does the "illustrated novel" format allow the plot to move more quickly. but I love how it allows us to get deep into Taylor’s head. The dynamic between Taylor and Abigail is one of my favorite parts to write. I see Abigail as this wonderful, vibrant force who genuinely cares for Taylor, even if her methods are a bit… unconventional. She’s the catalyst he needs, I think. I appreciate your thoughts on Taylor's "egg" status. He's navigating such a complex internal landscape, and this whole MIT experience is forcing him to confront aspects of himself he's long suppressed or never even considered. It’s a messy, confusing process, and I’m aiming to portray that authentically. As for his future orientation... well that’s all part of his self-discovery hehe. 💕 And thank you so much, Jade!!! 🥰

Emory Ahlberg

Ellen, yeah, Taylor's "SCIENCE!" (lol) approach to her situation is definitely a coping mechanism, this attempt to quantify and rationalize everything, especially these new, confusing feelings. I think it’s how she makes sense of a world that suddenly stopped making sense. And yes, Abigail is just a force of nature! I wanted her to be this catalyst for Taylor, someone who doesn't let her hide. Thank you for your comment on the artwork. It actually takes more time than my regular renders, but I think it fits! Singular, at this point I think Taylor’s style, especially as she’s figuring things out, is whatever Abigail puts on her lol - but it won't stay that way, I don't think... at least once she figures out what "signals" she wants to put out into the world!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Samantha! I love Abigail. And I really wanted her to be more than just the "manic pixie dream roommate." She's of course got her own stuff to figure out too, but her way of being in the world is exactly what Taylor needs, even if Taylor doesn't know it. It's like Taylor's operating system only has two settings: "hide" or "panic," and Abigail keeps trying to install new apps lol

Emory Ahlberg

Considering he's on crew, I'd actually call that anti-racist haha

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Jade! Yeah, especially for Taylor, who's so incredibly walled off and used to being invisible (or trying to be), a gentle suggestion just wouldn't cut it. He’d find a way to retreat. Abigail's this whirlwind that just doesn't give him the chance to overthink and say no to experiences he might actually, deep down, be curious about or even need. She bulldozes right through his anxieties lol

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Asami! 💕 Plenty more of them to come.

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments, Diana! And no worries about being "late"! Life definitely happens. I'm so glad you're connecting with Taylor's development and the dialogue. That whole dynamic with Will is definitely something I'm looking forward to exploring further. But Taylor wasn't kidding about his arms falling off. 😉 About the beard... I've always pictured Taylor as one of those young guys who, at 18, simply doesn't have significant facial hair growth yet. I certainly knew a few guys like that back in college, where a shave would last them days and even when it grew it was very sparse. Your thoughts on Taylor possibly being intersex are definitely interesting. We're definitely exploring Taylor's internal experience of his body feeling 'wrong' for his assigned gender... but is that because of how he feels or because of how society treats him? We'll have to wait and see! 😊

Emory Ahlberg

Ryan, thank you so much! What an amazing compliment. 😊 I try to write the stories I wanted to see in the world, so maybe that helps!

stacy C

Really liking this Em.....the writing and illustrations keep it zinging along :-) x

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Stacy! I'm really enjoying the writing!

Emory Ahlberg

Loved that series. So well-done... even if it was very sad!

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, S.C.! Yeah, I think for Taylor, it couldn't just be about putting on a dress. This edgier style is a version of femininity he can actually connect with because it feels powerful, not just "pretty." It's the first time he's been able to look in the mirror and not just see the disguise, but see a person he could maybe, possibly, want to be... at least for the next semester! 😉
