Armed with Abigail's fashion advice and zero dating experience, Taylor meets Maya for coffee in Harvard Square.

Sorry this late, everyone. I had a stressful week at work that didn't allow for as much creative time as usual. But writing this chapter helped a lot! At least it is a long one at 7,000+ words plus more art than usual! 💕

So sweet, charming and yes, adorable! And wow, Wendy looks almost like a mini me of their Mom. Now I am curious how Taylor will look with longer hair.

Gemma

I am still processing the multiple issues, themes, feelings you have covered in this chapter. Taylor personal growth as a person. It was so pleasing to see Taylor having the courage to ‘sit with,’ and be there for Abby. Allowing himself to step outside his comfort zone of maths, science, logic and into the area of feelings and just being. Taylor’s anxiety on his date with Maya was palpable. So scary on so many levels, fear of discovery on top of the normal anxieties that would be present on any first date. Maya looked beautiful and she and Taylor were so well matched. Loved the different ways the word ‘gravity’ throughout the chapter. I also loved the interplay between Maya and Taylor’s two different worlds, the capacity within this to find commonality different perspectives that intrigued and brought them both closer. The images are again wonderful, my favourite being the shot from the back of Maya and Taylor walking, their hands almost touching and the underlying tensions and feelings that would have been bubbling up in both of them. My heart went out to Taylor. How hard it would have been experiencing those intoxicating feelings of euphoria ‘he’ was encountering from mutual attraction between him and Maya and the contrasting feelings arising from underlying fears of discovery and sense of guilt around deceiving Maya through ’pretending to be a girl.’ I wonder if Taylor wishes there was a magic wand that he could use and then suddenly ‘he,’ could could become a ‘she,’ and fully embrace the landslide of positive feelings ‘she’ would be experiencing at this time.

Oh this is super cute, I love it. These two are so good together.

Amber Caledonia

Abigail and Taylor are wonderful together. (As roommates! Gal pals?) The way they're helping each other out is just, well, nice, which I'm guessing is what Taylor really needs. Not just someone to throw reassurances at him but being helpful too. The (unexpected but welcome) kiss aside, it seems like the same is happening with Maya, Taylor is a nervous mess but settles when he can contribute Sporadic date thoughts: "And what's wrong with pretentious anyway?" Mr./Ms. Charisma knows just the right stuff to say to a film major EW TAYLOR get your boots off the couch Wendy gets one extremely loud incorrect buzzer for her take on talking about physics on a date

Kris Greg

Worth the wait. I found myself getting worried for Taylor.

A wonderful chapter as always, I’d say more but I’m at my shit job Nd no time atm. Favorite pic, the very last one of their hands almost touching. My mind imagines it’s when they are parting but the hands linger, the touch lingers, neither wants it to end. And poor Taylor the guilt..:I don’t think they will make it till the end of the semester before “confessing” to Abigail.

Claire

This chapter was just perfect... I loved it!

Tim

Good! I don't mean that on a "good-better-best" scale. Rather, I mean I NEEDED this chapter.

Sunflower

Another home run! What a wonderful chapter. They seem so well suited. Until everything gets all mixed up after Taylor's other date!

Tim

Or perhaps Sunday's date brings clarity?

Maggie Heels

Again I have very mixed feelings... ehhh this situation is so complicated... From one side I feel that Taylor besides his gynecomastia thing is an egg... but from the other side I think that Maya deserved to know the whole mystery before planting a kiss... also my experience at dating is less than zero... I've never been on a date in my entire life so I don't know anything about it at all so don't believe anything I write... P.S. sorry for moody comment

"Stolen warmth of the afternoon . . .." , Brilliant doesn't begin to cover it. Your prose reads like poetry.

Ellen Mellor

So cute! Although I feel for Taylor that she's stuck in this pretty terrible situation - she needs to tell someone the truth soon or she's going to burst and the longer it takes to come clean, the harder it's going to be. Also, I liked the little peak of Maya's nerdiness - "Tea. Earl grey."... "Hot."

2026-09-14 23:00 Didn't have time to read all the episode. Sorry if a say some shits. But basically, what i rapidly reads, is that Taylor is a man dress as a woman who want to finish his school as a trans man and now he is dating a woman in a lesbian relationship... I hope he run fast🤔 Sorry but i have a lot of difficulty to say she for taylor. For me it's still a guy with physical difficulties

Oh Ms A. What a novelty. That was sweet and charming, such a long way from the darkness that tends to dominate most of your stories. Some wonderful descriptive writing, almost too many quotable lines, Abigail smiling through her own troubles and both showing commendable loyalty and compassion to the other. Then the date itself, just delightful with that unique teenage mix of angst and euphoria, all with the added spice of Taylor’s imposter syndrome. I can’t be the only reader singing the Beach Boys’ immortal Wouldn’t It Be Nice after reading that episode. Now, how does Sunday’s outing with Will compete? Can’t wait!

In Chapter 4, on page 10, Abigail talks about her life and “her parents' messy divorce.” Perhaps this part should be changed.

Thank you, Diana. She would look stunning, I'd say! Maybe we'll have a chance to find out... 😉

Thank you so much for this, Gemma. What a thoughtful comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed the opening scene with Abigail. I think it's the first time Taylor's ever been on the other side of that kind of emotional support. He's learning a whole new emotional language, and it's messy and new, but he's trying. And that date with Maya... my god, I wanted it to feel like a total gut punch of joy and terror. He's experiencing this incredible connection for the first time, but it's all filtered through this lens of fraud. The euphoria is real, but he feels like he's stealing it, which just makes the guilt so much sharper. That's such a sharp question about the magic wand. Right now, I don't think he's thinking, "I wish I was a girl." I think he's thinking, "I wish this wasn't a lie." He's conflating the positive social experiences (being seen, being found attractive, having friends) with the performance of being a girl. For him, the magic wand wouldn't be about changing his identity, it would be about making the lie true so he could enjoy all these good things without the crushing weight of the deception. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

They were sooo fun to write, Zoe. I felt like I was on the date with them hehe.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Amber! I really wanted their friendship to feel like the emotional core of the story. This is Taylor's first time that someone has treated his problems not just with sympathy, but like a team sport. Mom is supportive, but Abigail gets in the trenches with him. She's not just saying "you'll be okay," she's handing him fishnets and mascara and saying "WE will be okay." 💕 Sporadic thoughts on your sporadic thoughts: LOL - as a former film major, I agree 🤣 OMG you're so right, his boots are totally on the couch. That's disgusting, haha. I didn't even catch that. And yes, Wendy gets the buzzer! I love her, but she's basically telling him to mask his special interests, but his special interests are exactly what Maya finds so fascinating. It's that classic thing where the people who love you most can sometimes give the worst advice because they want you to fit in, not realizing your "weird" parts are actually your best ones!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Kris. I think that Taylor is also worried for Taylor!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Samantha! I hope your shift flew by. I love your read on that final moment with their hands. I wanted to capture that feeling where a simple touch feels like it's rewriting your whole history. 💕 For Taylor, who's been so touch-starved and isolated, that lingering contact feels like a miracle but also a curse. He's finally getting this connection he's craved, but he feels like he's stealing it... That secret with Abigail is definitely getting heavier by the day. The more he leans on her and experiences this genuine, unconditional friendship, the more the lie starts to feel like a betrayal. I think the pressure is absolutely building there!

Emory Ahlberg

Ooh, thank you so much, Claire! Can't wait for you to read Chapter 10 in a few days. ☺️

Emory Ahlberg

I think I know what you mean, Tim. 💕 Thank you! Next chapter up in just a few days...

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Sunflower! I had a blast writing that date. I think what makes them connect so deeply is that they're looking at the universe from opposite ends of the same telescope. But that's also what makes it such a gut punch for him. He's finally being seen in this amazing way, but he's convinced it's all for a person who doesn't exist. Every bit of that joy is immediately followed by this wave of guilt, like he's stealing happiness. 😔

Emory Ahlberg

No need to apologize at all, Maggie! Taylor doesn't have the language yet to think, "Maybe this is who I am." Instead, he thinks, "This is a role I'm playing, and it's working." And that kiss with Maya... oh my god, I totally get why it feels so complicated. I don't think Taylor went into it with any intention to deceive her in that moment... Maya is the one who kissed HIM, after all. But that gut-punch of guilt he feels immediately after is so real. He knows, on some level, that this beautiful thing is built on a lie, and it just makes the moment both incredibly sweet and incredibly painful. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

WOW - thank you so much. I have to admit, that line got me too. I wanted to capture that sense of a joy that is completely real but one that feels like you have no right to it. 😔

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you Ellen! That pressure is the whole engine of the story. He's building this life that's more fulfilling than anything he's ever known, but it's all on this foundation of a lie. The longer he waits, the more he has to lose. Hehe, thank you for catching the Picard reference!

Emory Ahlberg

No worries at all! That difficulty you're having with his pronouns makes sensel. That's the core of his whole crisis right now. He sees himself as a guy, too. This whole thing started as a disguise, a means to an end. But the 'lie' is starting to feel more real and more affirming than his 'truth' ever did.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Robert! It's true, I wanted to explore something a little different this time. I like to do that with my illustrated novels. The world is dark enough, you know? Sometimes we need a story about finding the light, even if it's in a complicated, messy way. That dynamic with Abigail is the heart of his social awakening. He's never had to be a friend before, just a son or a student. When he sees her hurting, he has to choose to step outside his own anxiety and be there for her. It's the first time he's really putting someone else's emotional needs before his own fear. And that date with Maya... god, I wanted it to be a gut punch of joy and terror. He's experiencing this incredible connection for the first time, but it's all filtered through this lens of fraud. The euphoria is real, but he feels like he's stealing it, which just makes the guilt so much sharper. I love the "Wouldn't It Be Nice" comparison. Perfect. That song is pure yearning. It's about dreaming of a simple, beautiful future you can't have yet. And Will... yeah he's a whole different kind of challenge. Maya represents this romantic possibility. Will represents a challenge to Taylor's entire understanding of masculinity, friendship, and even himself. Will it mean more? Well, you'll soon see! ☺️

Emory Ahlberg

Oops! Great catch. I have this whole bio written for Abigail, and I forgot that detail about her parents had already been written about. The final version will have that changed! ☺️

Ellen Mellor

I'm really interested in the fact that you use male pronouns for Taylor even when comments use female ones and it's making me question what I should do. I have been using she/her as a presumption of Taylor's egginess and that he will be she by the end of the story. That assumption is absolutely not guaranteed though. It would be an interesting turn if he got found out and kicked out and went back to being boy Taylor. It's also making me question how 'polite' and 'supportive' I am being. Although he is a fictional character, I am wondering if by ignoring his choice of pronoun is indicative of something about me. I like to think that I wouldn't misgender anyone and the act of dressing in feminine clothing is not necessarily indicative of a trans identity. Basically, until he (and you) start referring to him as her, I'm going to do the same. What? Me, overthinking stuff? How dare you! The very idea!

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Ellen! It's interesting... Sure, my choice to use he/him for Taylor is deliberate. Because, right now, in his own head, Taylor is a boy. He sees this whole situation as a disguise, a performance he has to maintain to survive. The narration is so close to his point of view that it has to reflect his current self-perception. So that dissonance between how he sees himself (a boy with a "physical abnormality") and how the world is starting to see him (a girl) is kinda the central engine of the story. That said (for instance) I always use "she" for Nikki, even if she'd flip me off for doing so. 😝 And please, keep overthinking! It's my favorite thing to see.

Emory Ahlberg

Very interesting point. I think for right now, Taylor sees his body as a 'glitch' - a mistake... and this puts all the focus on his experience and the social aspects of gender, on how the world treats him differently based on his presentation, and what that unlocks inside him.
