A little something different for you today. Sometimes a story needs to be told in a different way.

This one is about arriving.

Semi-autobiographical.

I am extremely thankful for all of you. Happy Thanksgiving! 💕

Beautiful. Terrifying, hopeful, and beautiful.

Omagathief

What a place to end the story Emory. Does the family accept her or do they slam the door in her face, do they scream at her asking what has she done to herself, call her a freak or mistaken or tell her that she is just confused. I hope it’s the first option but I know all the others are just as likely

Crewchick

Happy Thanksgiving Emory! Where ever, how ever, and with whom ever you you choose to celebrate it.

mdaily

Tim

You are an amazing talent, Emory... and an even more amazing person! Happy Thanksgiving.

Gemma

Poetic, beautifully written touching story of courage and determination, of self love and being true to oneself. Even the conclusion of this story, the image of her pleading eyes, the bottle of wine, this in turn enabling us all to further embody, connect and sit with her fear, with her humility and the hope she holds. Within her thoughts we become acutely aware and attuned to the underlying dilemma, to the reality that rebirth of one’s true self can also be dependent on the capacity of those we love to let go. Within this, her heart felt acute awareness of the underlying themes and experiences of ambiguous loss and grief that will be experienced as part of her loved ones journey towards love and acceptance as it had been such a central part of her own journey. Very heartfelt and touching, a story with themes and elements so many of us can identify. Thank you.

Tuor

What a beautiful story 🥰 I bet she has a seat at the feast! Happy Thanksgiving Emory.

Ellen Mellor

I'm not crying. You're crying. That was beautiful. With it being semi-autobiographical and also hitting so close to home - my coming out to my family was much earlier than in this story but the feelings were very similar - just makes me want to give you the tightest hug. Happy Thanksgiving and I hope you get to spend with a kind and loving family. 💜

Ella Cherry

Wow… that was so beautiful and inspiring. Thank you, Emory! We don’t really have this holiday over here, but happy Thanksgiving anyway! ❤️

Helena Grace

The art is phenomenal, the style choices are so amazing. Each word carries so much weight, it's crushing and uplifting. The experiences it conveys, are so relatable. And it might be one of the best things I've ever read. Just outstanding work, Em.

Roz Milner

Thanks for this, I loved it

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Ellen! 💖🫂 Yes... I was in that driveway and I almost drove away so many times I almost walked into the woods I wanted to do anything other than knock on that door existential fear But I had a wonderful Thanksgiving - I hope you did, too!

M

Thanks Emory. This tugs my heartstrings. Liked the approach, wonderfully thought out and told. Loved the open ending, cause it is almost all we can do, in the attempt to connect to those we love with our true selves. Happy Thanksgiving all! Hugs ❤️

Robertlouis

That was really sweet, Emory, and if it was indeed autobiographical to any degree, then my heart goes out to you. It’s a beautiful vignette that rings so very true, and the ending on that wintry doorstep is absolutely perfect. Lovely art too. xxx

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Robert! 💕 Yes, it is autobiographical. This happened with me and everything I wrote in this is true… Only the art is the (semi) part. I am not a redhead! And I’m not named Claire hehe

Rinny writes

wow this was amazing. thank you for that glimpse at you.my own journey was similar enough that this really strikes a chord. Love it! thank you

Jade Diaz

This is so vulnerable and real. Beautiful writing, beautiful art, I am giving thanks for you, my sweet talented friend. 💕

Maggie Heels

Happy Thanksgiving to you and to all gathered here ❣️❣️❣️

Kris Greg

Beautiful I appreciate you sharing your lovely, heartfelt story.

Caren

Pain, anticipation, fear and loathing. The lights of the holidays are always the brightest as they shine on the memories of a hundred holidays where you felt the pressure of being someone you never were.

Samantha Louise

Oof I felt this one in my heart. That fear is so very strong. I hope she got the reception she wanted. (And you did too. 🫂)

AB

Is that the end of the story ?

Shannon

The first family thing after any changes are visible hits hard in a way that not many can understand. The terror is just crippling. Thank you for sharing Em.

Robertlouis

In that case I can only fervently hope that when that door opened you received the warm and loving welcome that you were hoping for. 💕

Nowell, if you're still having issues, I uploaded a PDF. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Shannon. 💕 It was tough - but ultimately worth it...

Emory Ahlberg

Yes. You get to decide what happened next. 💖

Emory Ahlberg

💖 Thank you so much, Samantha. I did from some, not from others.

Emory Ahlberg

💕 Wow, Caren... Yes, that is exactly what it felt like. Thank you so much. I was in that driveway, and I almost drove away so many times. I almost walked into the woods. I really wanted to do anything other than knock on that door

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Kris. 💕 I imagine many of us have had similar feelings and experiences.

Emory Ahlberg

Some opened. Some closed. But at least I walked through the open doors as myself. 💖 Thank you, Robert!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Jade. Huge thanks for you, too - you're an amazing friend and inspiration to me. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, M. 💖 Yes - We can have the courage to walk up to the door and knock (which is a lot). We have to hope THEY will have the courage and grace to let us inside. Or we can find new family of our own.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Roz. 💖 I was a little shy about my poetry. I'm really glad you liked it.

Emory Ahlberg

God, that is such incredible praise... Thank you so much, Hel. 💕 I admit I was a little bit nervous posting this one!

Helena Grace

I will continue to heap praise on you in semi private spaces lol

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Tuor! 💖 I hope you had a great one, too!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you very much, Rinny. 💕 I know all of our journeys are different, but I think many of them strike the same notes along the way.

Katie Fuchs

Reading all the other reactions just makes this hit hard all over again.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Ella! It's actually my favorite holiday out of all of them - an excuse to be a bit glutinous. 😊

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Alyson. 💖 Was a bit nervous for this one.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Blaidd. 💖 That about sums up the trans experience I think.

Emory Ahlberg

Up to you. I wanted to leave it open-ended. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

💕 Thank you, Omaga. Unfortunately, you're quite right. In my case, it was a mixed bag... but one I'll still take over not being there as myself.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Diana. I love the emphasis on "choose." That agency is so important. I hope you had a peaceful and happy celebration, however you spent it! ❤️

Emory Ahlberg

I hear you 💖. It's definitely complicated, and sometimes the family we choose is the one that understands us best. Thanks for reading, mdaily!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Crystal. 💕 I was hoping the art would carry the weight of the words I really appreciate you!

Emory Ahlberg

Gemma, once again you have gone straight to the heart of it. "Ambiguous loss" is a perfect phrase... that specific grief of loved ones having to let go of who they thought we were so we can become who we are. Thanks for seeing the hope in those images, not just the fear. It doesn't always work out, but the hope remails. 💕

Gemma

Thank you Emory for sharing. The presence of ambiguous loss is so strong and present in many of our lives and in the lives of others we love. It requires compassion and understanding within ourselves as well from others we love to navigate this type of loss and to move towards loving acceptance.

Robertlouis

Bless you, luv. And keep walking. ❤️

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Katie. It really is amazing and lovely to read all these comments and see all the likes... I really wasn't sure it would connect, and I'm much less confident about my poetry attempts. 💕

stacy C

Oooh that one resonated with me a little.....lovely words x

Pet Jeffery

I've just read this. It's so true, so gut-wrenching. Thank you, Emory.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Stacy. 💕 That means a lot.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Pet! 💕 This one is very personal, I'm glad you liked it.
