It's here! Finally!

I know it's been a while since the last Jack & Jill episode, and I'm sorry for the wait. Between the day job being absurdly busy and Homecoming's finale taking everything out of me emotionally... I needed a minute to breathe.

But I also needed light after all that darkness. So I decided to do something a little different: I combined the "Boughs of Holly" snapshot with a full Jack & Jill episode. What was supposed to be a short, sweet holiday story became... well, knowing me, it expanded. A lot. Many, many pages. As in, uh... 59????

Maybe longest ever? 💕

Anyway, I wanted to live in this happier headspace for a while. I wanted to spend time with Holly being messy and maternal and ridiculous. I wanted to see the Coven and the Toys trapped together in a storm with no Xu, no hierarchy, just survival and humanity and weird, broken family dynamics. This episode also incorporates so many wonderful ideas from my amazing friends and collaborators - Helena, Katie, and Jade - who have helped expand this world in ways I never imagined. Their characters and contributions are woven throughout this story, and you'll be seeing much more of them soon! This universe is richer because of their creativity and input.

I know I've missed a lot of deadlines lately, and I know I apologize constantly. I'm working on being kinder to myself about that and also giving you all realistic expectations. But what I'm NOT sorry about what I'm giving you. This episode is exactly what I wanted it to be, and I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Thank you for your patience. Thank you for sticking with these stories. Thank you for caring about these characters and this world!

Here's to 2026 being an amazing year for all of us. 💕🎄

lovely little party. HNY

Katie Fuchs

Minerva is never off coms because she lives on-line plus mocking Davis is fun. Tellus is never off duty despite her husband currently being the only guy at the party and it's awkward. Fun fact: Diana always throws the party, despite herself , of course it's officially Saturnalia. What -- this is all gibberish clearly.

Katie Fuchs

One more: Mars uses the holiday name as an excuse to poor one out for dear old dad make sure everyone curses his name.

This was a beautiful episode and absolutely worth the wait, and the through line is wonderful. Akari is the MVP of Christmas, I hope she got everything wanted under the tree. Chasing ~~Daphne~~ Davis with an Axe must have been a real dream come true. Everyone must be jealous. Having a single 24 hour of respite for all those toys must have been a godsend for them. I can't talk about this episode without mentioning baby Soledad, poor thing! But with the ending she seems to know something about the violence during the coming out dinner, and that's interesting! The art is stellar. Other than the axe chase, my favorite panel has to be the sheer joy on Holly's face in the wine cellar. But every single piece is wonderful. The small moments, enjoying a cooking, the gifts, the kissing, all anchor points of humanity that hopefully helped each and every one of the 12 manage. The humanity at the center of the machine. The joy in being human with candy or a cookie Breaking down because you won't be judged for it. The *fuck you davis* was outstanding. And the cuddle pile? So cute! Muppet Christmas Carol was an amazing choice. Mike gave Tyler some good advice but based on 2020, he hasn't learned a fucking thing.

Katie Fuchs

Ok, one more, the reason Aphrodite is the only one with a Greek name now is she got tired of confusion when discussing 2nd Dawn or the bonus program, so she asked everyone now use the Greek version of her code name.

Gemma

Phew! What a nice change of pace from Homecoming. We certainly are now Ben given an opportunity to review our previous assessments of Holly. Maybe in her own way making sacrifices to protect t those out through the Xu factory. It was nice to see the cowardice of Davis once again being revealed. Certainly you do not want to get on the wrong side of Akari. A bit if a relief and more joyful episode providing further history and understanding on characters and relationships prior to upcoming attempted coup. The images, as always amazing. Happy New Year Emory and thanks again for all your brilliant creative works.

Love this Fuck you, Davis :D (Happy New Year!)

2026-09-14 23:00 Happy new year to all of you for me it's already 2026 since 12 hours. So everyone can miss the deadline 😉. I really love these episode but wasn't Davis fat in 2018🤔 I really love to see the past of soledad, she will be a good holly's heir. i don't recognize all the other but i think i've still the head in the ass. (Too much alcool yesterday I guess)

OMFG... Ohhhh.... "Daphne! please don't run.... this axe is really heavy idk how long I'll hold it... you and me both knows that it was designed to be handled by strong firemen and not a weak lady like me... just let me "accidentally" drop this axe on your cock'n'balls and then join us girls, please, please, pretty please... ohhh Daphne!!!"

Kris Greg

I enjoyed the hell out of this. Thanks for taking the time to make this. Remember to set more sane goals for yourself in this new year.

I like the Dresden Files: in the most recent book Dresden came to the realization that every time he throws himself into the meat grinder, even for the best intentions, it takes something from you, and over time those losses accumulate, and eventually you don't recognize the person on the other side.

First: Happy New Year. I hope you have a fantastic and successful 2026. And that you prioritise yourself a bit more. Second: that was lovely. A really sweet moment of lightness in the dark. And a wonderful moment of revenge against Davis who is shown up as the blustering, cowardly bully that we all knew he was. You also really skillfully managed to get some foreshadowing in there (mid-shadowing as it's all already coming down in the main story?). Thirdly: Holly's outfit was utterly amazing and also completely ridiculous. A perfect sexy Christmas outfit, in fact.

My dear Hemory, First of all, I wish you a wonderful year of creativity and, of course, excellent health. As for me, my health is improving, which gives me a glimpse of the end of Niki's story, my beloved heroine. I eagerly await her return. With all my friendship.

New Year's Eve 2018 -- certainly nobody who can control all non-critical video feeds at Juno Base played a security loop of the axe murder attempt set to jaunty music from early Hollywood including a special countdown clock version.

Katie Fuchs

Btw she insists on sending him Xmas cards.

Katie Fuchs

I'll stop for now, but again thank you Emory for the lovely surprise in this regarding, hopefully, the terrible people I can still make people root for.

Tim

Meant to post a comment sooner, but I spent all of yesterday enjoying silly games. My highest complements on what you did here, Emory. You took what was supposed to be just a fun, light holiday tale and mushed it together with an increasingly suspenseful dramatic serial and voilà, just like the geniuses at Reese's, you've created a delightful combination. I'm really looking forward now to Soledad's role in the chaos that's about to ensue, working together with John Larson and with Holly's Christmas wish—Holly's spark—driving her. And who knows, when the dust settles maybe we'll see more of Soledad and John Larson in Phase 10?

Jade Diaz

I feel like *if* Davis were to pick a femme name it would not be Daphne. Anyway, Akari's keen eye has seen something within Davis that bears some thoughtful exploration. I especially love the expression Davis can't hide as Akari calls him out, as I think it beautifully captures that "oh shit I have been deeply perceived" expression. I love these backstory flashbacks, even as we wait for the climax of this story to proceed. All of the pieces are on the board now and we are all eagerly waiting to see how they move through the endgame. Also Mike's Life Day tee shirt is literally worth my full annual patreon membership. Listening to Mike put Taylor on blast as a grumpy old man on his one day off is everything.

Jade Diaz

A better wish for his new year than Davis deserves, certainly.

Jade Diaz

Muppet Christmas Carol is actually the best movie adaptation of all time.

M Fielding

Always worth the wait, Emory. Thank you for some Christmas Cheer!

stacy C

Brilliant....a Xmas cracker....hope you had a good one Em and all the best for the New Year xx

Omagathief

I love the foreshadowing in this of what is happening in season 10

Robertlouis

Hi Emory. Here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous new year to you and yours, to all your wonderful collaborators, and to all those who contribute to the comments on here and have helped to create a genuine and warm sense of community. OK. I just LOVED this sideways glimpse away from the tension and darkness that has characterised Jack and Jill for so long, and to see, at last, a different, empathetic and human side to Holly. I’ve been very hard on Holly in the past, and I suspect that you might be trying to help her redeem herself to some extent here. Her one on one speech with Solomon/Soledad is certainly a stirring declaration of defiance and intent, and, if I may, also reads like a coded challenge to the current regime in the US. The echoes of that speech and that one glorious evening still resonated with Soledad on the night of the auction two years later, so Holly’s actions did some lasting good, and maybe, no just maybe, point to a hopeful outcome to all the horror.

Robertlouis

Jade, IF Davis was ever poetically subjected to the processes that he so sadistically inflicted on hundreds of helpless toys and companions, how about a twist of the knife (literally) which makes the female version not just weak, but facially ugly AF?

Jade Diaz

I can assure you that whatever physical ugliness you think Davis should endure, his own internal self talk would be 1,000,000 times more unforgiving and harsh.

Emory Ahlberg

Love this breakdown, Hel. Akari absolutely earned her MVP status. Spot on about Soledad. That night in the executive wing was the seed that finally bloomed into her defiance next to John Larson. I guess, to me, the humanity at the center of the machine is the whole point. The cuddle pile, the cookies, the Muppets... those are acts of war in a place designed to strip you of comfort. Rebellion isn't always fire axes (although they can be!) sometimes it's just letting someone sleep without fear for a few hours. Jade - You will get no argument from me! 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Happy New Year, Ellen! I fully FULLY intend to prioritize sanity this year. I love the term "mid-shadowing." Since we know where Soledad ends up - sitting next to John Larson with a look of grim determination - seeing the moment the seed was planted feels heavy even though the scene itself is sweet. And Holly's outfit... exactly, LOL. It is ridiculous, but I actually think that ownership is part of her own unique version of defiance.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Kris! I'm glad you enjoyed the break from the main timeline's tension - although I love that Soledad was featured in each! Sane goals are definitely on the menu for 2026, I promise. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

LOL, thank you, Maggie, Akari absolutely channeled every ounce of frustration into that chase. She knew she probably wouldn't actually swing - probably - but making him run was the gift she gave herself. He definitely earned the cardio!

Emory Ahlberg

Happy New Year, Nolwenn! Davis was a bit thinner at this point in 2018, but he fluctuates depending on how much stress-eating he is doing while torturing people haha. And yes, seeing Soledad in the past was really fun. She's the quiet observer who absorbed Holly's lesson about waiting. She isn't loud like Akari or charismatic like Holly, but she has endured.

Emory Ahlberg

The universal sentiment for 2026 seems to be "Fuck You, Davis," and I am here for it. He brings people together through shared loathing. It is his only positive contribution to society 🤣

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Gemma! Honestly, it felt really good to take a breath before the plunge. Holly is such a difficult character because she is both victim and perpetrator, but here we see her true motivation. She isn't trying to save the world... she's just trying to keep twelve people warm for one night. That small scale makes it harder to see, maybe. And Akari is the lion at the gate, hehe. ender - That's a perfect parallel. Holly has been in the meat grinder for eight years. She looks in the mirror and doesn't see Holden, but she also doesn't quite see herself either. She sees a construct built to withstand pressure. She thinks she has lost her humanity, but acts like this prove it is still there, just buried under scar tissue.

Ellen Mellor

I said nothing about sanity! I feel that might be stretching things too far for either one of us!

Emory Ahlberg

Ahahahah - Davis running for his life while festive music plays is the exact energy he deserves!

Emory Ahlberg

Lagarde, hearing your health is improving is the best way to start the year! Wonderful news 💕💕💕. Don't worry, Nikki's story is far from over. Her journey is about finding a new version of herself that can survive / thrive, much like the toys in this episode. She has a resilience. We will see her again this month!

Emory Ahlberg

Hi Tim! I think the Reese's comparison is high praise! Mixing the holiday fluff with the creeping dread was, I think, the only way to tell this story. Safety on the island is always temporary, a held breath before the scream. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Jade, I love what you saw in the character of Davis with your fantastic writing and insight. What Akari saw is the envy rotting Davis from the inside out. He hates the acquisitions because they're allowed to be what he represses: vulnerable, feminine, taken care of. That expression on his face wasn't just fear of the axe.... it was the terror of being known / seen.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you! Can't wait to show you the rest of season 9, Omaga!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, M! I imagine Christmas cheer in Clinic 12 is a rare commodity, but I really wanted to show Holly doing her best...

Emory Ahlberg

Happy New Year, Robert! The community here is real magic. It's honestly wonderful and it makes me so so happy to read everyone's comments to me and to each other. You're right to be hard on Holly - she has blood on her hands - but monsters are rarely born, they are made. And I think Holly would agree with everything you're saying about her... she doesn't believe she is worth saving. A happy ending was never in the cards. So I guess this episode was about stripping away the "Queen" persona to show the terrified prototype underneath. Her speech to Soledad was a challenge to any regime built on cruelty. Of course, that night didn't save Soledad from the years of abuse that followed, but it gave her the mental ammunition to endure them. That is Holly's legacy, I think: She didn't stop the machine, but she taught the cogs how to endure.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Stacy! I did have a good one, hope you did, too - and 2026 is off to a pretty good start,

Emory Ahlberg

This would've been 2 years into Jill's transition, so she would've been on PL-4 and definitely wouldn't have been put in with the "toys." Nikki is also on the island at this point, but she was kept isolated from everyone else because she was "commissioned" by Hutchinson! LMAO about Soledad as Jill's new step-mom!

Emily

What if someone put Davis’s profile into the program and it revealed something unexpected. I’ve never been sure how I felt about the unspoken hint “what if Davis was forced into the program” On the one had I felt it was poetic justice. But on the other hand, he is the last man on earth who deserves to be a woman. Being a woman isn’t a punishment. In my mind, it’s a reward. I suppose the worst punishment would be Davis’s egg breaks but she isn’t allowed to be a woman. I’ve tried to figure out why Davis is so cruel. It never occurred to me that deep down it’s what Davis wants. That it’s self hatred. But I wouldn’t lie if I said I’d hadn’t wondered what Davis would look like as “Daphne” And it didn’t get past my attention that Davis has lost weight. Someone wants to change the way they look.

Emory Ahlberg

Great comments, Emily. 💖 You noticed the weight loss! Very sharp eye. Is it stress, or is he trying to change his shape? Your point about punishment is important, too: IF he is repressed, then making him "Daphne" might eventually bring him peace (the ultimate irony). But would he deserve relief from the dysphoria to he so willingly inflicted on others?

Wes Adams

I really enjoyed this Christmas treat. Special holidaybonus, Davis being mindfucked with. I did not realize how much I have missed this hair color and style on Holly. Her current more reddish hair makes her coloring look a bit washed out, compared to her dark hair.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Wes! I actually agree with you on Holly's hair. Hopefully she'll have a chance to go back to her original color. 💖
