This one means a lot to me. Edie's story started as a simple idea - a B-17 crew, a pinup girl, a drawn straw - and grew into something I really didn't expect. Three parts, nearly 33,000 words, and a character I'll carry with me for a long time.

I put together this little video as a celebration of Edie and everything she found in Port Moresby in 1943 and later in Japan - community, identity, and Walt. 😊

The beginning is audio from another B-17 called The Memphis Belle. The song is "Some Days" by Ira Wolf - one of my favorite singer-songwriters.

I hope you enjoy it. 💕(It's also available to download below)

Made me cry (again)

Tim

Wow! You really got to share this.

Kris Greg

It's nice to see something beautiful. Thank you for making this.

Tuor

Wonderful 🥰

Ellen Mellor

So beautiful. The animation is really well done and the music is a perfect choice, underscoring the story perfectly. You are so amazingly talented.

Pet Jeffery

That's lovely. The story encapsulated in sounds and moving images. The transition from black and white to colour, when Eddie first sees herself as Edie reminded me of Dorothy's arrival in Oz. I've seen the Memphis Belle flying in the Southend-on-Sea air show, some time around 1990.

Crewchick

Wow! There is just something about seeing your characters come to life through video.

Jerome B

Emory, that was one of the most beautiful, emotive and wonderful creations I have ever seen. As a military vet, with operational tours under my belt, The Last Straw resonated with me on a special level. This video was something else though. The perfect soundtrack too! I am not ashamed to admit my eyes were leaking whilst watching. Wow, just wow. 🥲❤️

Jenny S

I think I'm going to be returning to The Last Straw often. One of your best, Emory <3

SingularCurve

OMG actual audio from THE Memphis Belle? Amazing! One of the most iconic of the B17s to have ever been flown. They made a couple of movies/films about her even! (Yes I had a hyper fixation on aeroplanes at one time)

Nica

So, so beautiful! Art and story absolutely outstanding. I love it!

Tim

While not as famous as The Memphis Belle (and not the "star" of it's own movie), The Last Straw had a bit part in the movie Tora, Tora, Tora. B-17E 41-2432 (later christened The Last Straw) was one of four B-17s to land at Hickam Field on December 7, 1941, just as the Japanese began their attack on Pearl Harbor and Hickam. The other 8 in the flight of 12 landed on golf courses, beaches and a couple of other airfields. Here's a short clip from the movie (The Last Straw did in fact have to land with one bad wheel as depicted in the movie): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MruD1FTdf-Q Don't know the origin of the real The Last Straw's name and nose art, but Emory is right that it got the name and paint job at Jackson Field in June, 1943.

I don’t have the words to describe how touching this video clip you created is. Atmospherically it is so touchingly beautiful, it captures the bitter sweet intense feeling of love, desire and emotional angst and heart break. Fortunately after these scenes of bitter sweet heart ache we are rewarded and privy to witnessing such a sweet romantic conclusion to this masterpiece. The soulful voice of Ira Wolf, her words and music are a wonderful backdrop and provide in the last wonderful element to this heart felt touching romance.

This is an amazing work of art, Emory. A masterpiece. Thank you for sharing it with us.

M Fielding

Absolutely lovely. Thank you, Emory.

Tamsin Davis-Langley

This video is every bit as heartachingly beautiful as the novella, just compressed and set to music. 🥹 Thank you so, so much.

Eva Grimm

Absolutely beautiful from start to finish!

David G Eason

The opening audio from the bell irl the bell was the first b17 to complete 25 missions for a full tour also the most dangerous position on a 17 was being a waist gunner but this is amazing

Crystal Peaches

Loved the transition from black and white to color for our Eddie when she truly lives. Such a beautiful video and such a moving story. xxx

Erica Rost

What's great about this story is the very fine line between genre, which makes this character truly amazing!

Erin Banneret

Emory, this is unbelievable. As my girlfriend said, watching over my shoulder, this belongs in a museum.

AB

Stunning, how did you even make this. So in theory you could make a feature length release ?

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Tim. This video makes me cry in a good way. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you and welcome to the creator's club, Erica! 💕

Emory Ahlberg

The dialogue is much harder, AB. And it takes many, many hours! But, in theory... sure!

Emory Ahlberg

Aw, thank you so much, Erin. I am still watching it myself - and I love the song by Ira. 💕 As soon as I (re)heard it, I knew this was the tune!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Tuor! 💕 I had a lot of fun with the animation... took longer than I thought, but it was worth it.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Crystal. I really loved animating that part, too. Seemed familiar, somehow. 😉

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much 💖 As soon as I got the idea in my head for the animation, and I (re)heard the song, I knew exactly what I had to do...

Emory Ahlberg

You're welcome, Kris. 💖 Thank you for enjoying it!

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Pet. 💕 Edie definitely stepped into a new world when she saw herself as a woman for the first time. And that airshow sounds cool! Wish I could've seen it.

Emory Ahlberg

Thanks, Diana! 💕 There is for me, too. Makes them feel even more real.

Emory Ahlberg

I really can't tell you how much that means to me, Jerome. Thank you so much. 💖 My eyes were leaking while making it - several times, in fact, so you're in good company. 😊

Emory Ahlberg

Me too, Jenny -- Edie is going to stay with me a long time. Maybe forever. 💖

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Steve! 💖 That is such a sweet compliment.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you, Zoe. This is one of my favorite things that I've ever made. I just rewatched it!

Emory Ahlberg

💕 Thank you, Nica! Sorry for the late reply, I'm still catching up on my comments. But this was both one of the most challenging stories I've ever done and the most rewarding - the same goes for the video!

Emory Ahlberg

💕 Thank you, David! Yep! The Bell was a remarkable airplane with a remarkable crew. The Last Straw was real, too, but not nearly as famous. Poor Frankie learned how dangerous the waist gunner position was. 😔

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, M! Sorry for my late reply to your comment. This video was extremely special to me. I'm glad it touched you, too. 💕

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so so much, Tamsin. 💕 Sorry for just replying back to your lovely comment. When I made the video, I was hoping it would feel like watching the highlights from a move version of the novella. The emotion is a lot... makes me tear up. 😭

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Gemma! 💖 I apologize for replying so late to your lovely comment. I really wanted to show Edie's whole journey, if possible, from despair to love... it was really daunting, but I was determined. And Ira Wolf's song just felt like the perfect music for it - it has helped me during dark times, too.

Emory Ahlberg

Thank you so much, Eva! I was so happy to show Edie's journey from the beginning... to a brand-new beginning for her. 💕
