Maybe it’s my twisted imagination, but my reading of this is a lot darker than most others. Maybe it’s what’s not said about what went before to create the circumstances about the transition - and whether it was forced, or not. As Leonard Cohen said on his perfectly elegiac final album, You Want It Darker? I do, every time.
