John sits down with English musician, producer, and DJ Simon Green, better known as Bonobo, to talk about how he wrote, recorded and produce

John sits down with English musician, producer, and DJ Simon Green, better known as Bonobo, to talk about how he wrote, recorded and produced works from across his back catalogue.

Bonobo first caught attention with his 1999 debut. His latest work, the single, ‘Expander’ released in August 2024, on Ninja Tune, is a slice of fresh yet unmistakable Bonobo, weaving organic vocals and instrumentation with vibrant dance floor energy.

Catching up at Baltic Studios, not too far from where Simon recorded his early work, the conversation digs into Bonobo’s creative process, discussing how he builds his unique drum patterns as well as exploring the essential plugins and sounds that shape his distinctive style.

Tracks discussed: Expander, Sapien, Cirrus, Black Sands

Thank you. This made me subscribe. Hope you can get MODERAT some day. My favorite band and the best electronic live band I ever saw!

Tim Adam-Smith

MODERAT is very firmly on the list so fingers crossed we’ll get an episode at some point!

This was great, what a legend! O'flynn next please :)

Joe Turner

Buzzing to get into this, subbed straight away when I saw this EP. Jamie xx and O’Flynn would be awesome

Tim Adam-Smith

Jamie wanted to come on but his label (Beggars) won’t agree to our usage terms! Real shame as we’d love to have him on!

Sergey Chuvayev

Thanks a lot for this episode! Bonobo and Fourtet episodes are my favorites so far!

JC C.

Amazing video, so many insights from Bonobo! The host doesn’t need to propose 3 answers every time he asks a question, I feel like it kills the flow of the conversation

Joe Turner

That is a real shame, hope they can come to their senses haha!

Никита Туманов

Thanks John for this episode, thanks Simon for sharing it with us, it was my dream podcast, Bonobo is a legend)! It would be cool if you invited Stuart Howard (Lapalux), he's freaking awesome)!

Angry Token

Diego Laje

Watched the whole episode again and wow so much respect for this guy. I would have liked hearing more about his beatmaker times, first two albums. And the switch to dance music the „rediscovery phase“

Tim Adam-Smith

Glad you liked the episode and thanks for the feedback.

Tim Adam-Smith

We really could have made this a four hour conversation and still had things to discuss haha

Cris Pearson

Caribou, Fourtet... Now Bonobo! My dreams are coming true. Plaid would be amazing to hear from also. All their music have been with me for a long time. <3

Dan Cummings

This was fantastic. Bonobo introduced me to electronic music back in the animal magic days and i've had the privilege of seeing him live 3 times recently. He is a master of his craft. Thankyou tape notes - now opening ableton!

Angry Token

Next guest Trentemøller please!

vanecool

Finally finished to watch this! What a gift to hear all of these fantastic details about Simon’s process with music and those specific tracks, his creative process and even all the tech stuff, which is for music wizards really and a foreign language to me but so so interesting. This conversation was so satisfying to listen to. And to know that Sapien is also Simon’s favorite track!!!! Bonobo forever and ever and ever!!!!

Emil Johnsen

Watching for the third time. What a great interview!

Emil Johnsen

One vote for O'Flynn from me as well!

Great episode with a great artist! What are the chances of getting Clark on Tape Notes? He’s gotta be nearby sometimes!

Mark

I subscribed mainly because of the Bonobo and Four Tet interviews—two of my favorite artists. Thank you for hosting them! I love hearing their stories and the inspiration behind their music. While it might not be their favorite part, as an Ableton user, I can't get enough of the behind-the-scenes glimpses into their song breakdowns in Ableton. More of this, please! A few suggestions for artists I would love to see interviewed: Thievery Corporation, Tycho, Yppah, ODESZA, Sasha, Boards of Canada, Plaid, Olafur Arnalds, Ulrich Schnauss.

Tim Adam-Smith

So glad you enjoyed these episodes - we loved doing them! Thanks for all the suggestions too - will check out! And thanks for your support of Tape Notes!

Keifer

For the next artist suggestions: I second the motion here! Haha

Marty Audio

Love the podcast John, signed up to get the full version of this as Simon has been my main inspiration in starting a journey in music production. Since you had the original ableton project during expander review, I would have also loved to have seen his use of automation in parts of the track to build tension.

Tim Adam-Smith

There's honestly so much we could have discussed - could have been an all-day chat! Glad you enjoyed and thanks for supporting TN!

Dominique Dela Cruz

oh my!!! I love this! so excited to delve into all of the archives. hope you get floating points on here one day ;)

Tim Adam-Smith

Bonobo will be back in the autumn to discuss his new record! We recorded this one last month! And you can listen to the audio of episode 29 with Floating Points from 2019! Will hopefully get him back in future!

Josh

Love re-watching this one: you guys should get O'Flynn on, he's worked with Simon and he just released a new album. super fresh producer !

Tim Adam-Smith

We actually had O’Flynn on for episode 159 with Barry Can’t Swim! Check it out! Also brand new Bonobo episode already recorded - out this autumn!
