John sits down with indie-dance trio RÜFÜS DU SOL  to discuss how they wrote, recorded and produced their most recent album ‘Inhale / Exhale’.

Hailing from Sydney, Rüfüs Du Sol—comprised of Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt—joined together in 2010 through a shared passion for electronic music. Since their formation, they have evolved from local talents to global dance music icons, through their immersive blend of melodic and atmospheric sounds. With five chart-topping albums to their name, they have embarked on global tours, performed at renowned festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, and won a GRAMMY Award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording in 2022.

Today, they join us from each side of the US to dig into their latest project, ‘Inhale / Exhale’. As well as reflecting on their ever-changing writing processes, they explore the production techniques at the heart of their sound, sharing insights on distorting Tyrone’s vocals, gating, and having ‘bass wars’ to work out the best parts.

Updated DAW Audio!

Tracks discussed: Pressure, Fire / Desire, Exhale

It's wild to hear James mention the Radiohead influence @ 1:31:20. .. yesterday listening to "On My Knees" in the bridge the vocals and the keys sound VERY influenced by "Everything In Its Right Place" and this confirms it. Super cool!

Been waiting to glean insights into Rufus’ production techniques for years - so first, thank you so much for making this happen. I enjoyed myself very much. However, I so wish there would have been more opportunity for James to dig into more layers. Perhaps keeping the focus to a track or two and really going for depth, instead of trying to cover 3 tracks in 2 hours. While hearing Tyrone speak about process and inspiration was incredibly revealing and inspiring, I so hope there may someday be a round two that delves deeper into all the layers that go into their productions and explores how the parts sum together into some of the richest sonic worlds on offering by the human species. This conversation left me with so many questions. But, I do appreciate that this exists very much.

James, if you ever read this (heh)- please know there’s an audience out there that would LOVE to hear you talk production and nerd out on details. I’d kill to watch you work in real time
