NIKOLA KOVACEVIC

How involved were you in the mixing of the album ?

James Robertson

If you made it today, would you make it the same way?

Brad

Did you have any limitations when trying to create the record, if so, how did you get around them and did that influence the records sound?

HORT Music

What were your biggest musical influences at that time?

Ross Drummond

Why do you think a record that was influenced so heavily by the past resonated with so many then and still resonates now?

Ross Drummond

If you were approaching a debut record now, what do you think you’d do differently? Did it feel like a momentous thing at the time?

How much do you find you conceptualize a song idea and album before you start writing? For example on Moon Safari, were you thinking of creating these unique suspensions of time, physical spaces, visuals, and/or stories before you started working on the project or was that more a process of discovery? And once you had those ideas, how much trial and error did it take to create such an effortless sound? ( thanks for all the amazing music:) )

I have a few questions so feel free to pick your favorite one: Could you share how tracks like 'La Femme d'Argent' or 'All I Need' came together? Did you start with melody, chord progressions, textures, or rhythms first? The album has such a cohesive mood and flow—did you have a clear conceptual vision from the start, or was the cohesive atmosphere something that developed organically as you worked? Looking back, what aspect of Moon Safari are you most proud of, and is there anything you might approach differently if creating it today? Moon Safari is renowned for its lush, warm textures. Were there specific recording or mixing techniques you used to create the unique warmth and depth of the album?

One of the most striking aspects of your compositions, like 'Talisman,' is how you balance ethereal softness with compelling rhythmic grooves. Could you walk us through your approach to arranging these elements? I'm particularly interested in how you decide on instrumentation layering and the interplay between analog and electronic sounds to achieve that signature weightless-yet-grounded feeling.

Alexander von Bargen

Your music, especially on Moon Safari, has this special kind of warmth and coziness that - I suppose - goes beyond just using analog gear. How did you accomplish that?

Tony Winachi

Was the drums a mixture of live and sampled on Moon Safari and was sampling done on Akai S series for the looping like on Remember. How it sounds like it has the aliasing from the time stretching. Or was it a MPC SP12 programming as apposed to a sequencer and a S1000. Also was it the analogue (driven pre amps that gave it that warmth or the instrumental choice and what reverb and delays was used used during the recording.

Tim Oliver

One of the really striking things about Moon Safari to me is the combination of acoustic and electronic. I love in particular how you use the synths. What drew you to these particular instruments, and to use them in such a pure unprocessed way ? - when I guess at this time the trend was a bigger and more digital sound.

Wow. Air. What an honor. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Thank you for all your music. I would love to know how what inspired "All I need" - one of the most romantic songs ever made. How did that song come about? And how do you feel about that song? What are the roots of your inspiration? And secondly. I'd love to know how you recorded all the instruments. In terms of - do you do sound processing while recording - or almost nothing at all? The album sounds so open and natural. And did the mixing almost sort itself too? Or was it a bigger change from the recording? What did Stéphane "Alf" Briat add to your sound?

OITU

What did you remember being the hardest thing to get right back then (if anything).. compared to what is the hardest thing to get right in more recent years... (if anything). Thank you for existing! ✌️

Mark

The textures on Moon Safari are so rich and evocative - how did you approach sound design and instrument choice? Were there any unusual synths or gear that defined the album’s sound?
