John sits down with electronic producer and DJ Porter Robinson, to discuss how he wrote and recorded his third album ‘SMILE! :D’

Having begun self-producing at just twelve years old, Porter Robinson has since risen to become one of the most acclaimed artists within the EDM world, collaborating with artists such as Skrillex and Tiësto. His work has seen him tour extensively around the world and has even earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording, back in 2019.

In this episode, Porter dials in from North Carolina to chat about how he came up with his signature synth sounds, some of his favourite gear, including giving a guitar demo, and drawing inspiration from Coldplay tracks.

Tracks discussed: Cheerleader, Is There Really No Happiness?, Russian Roulette

For those of you wondering, the mic he used for vocals is the WA-251 (You can see it in one of his streams) (Hope this helps cause even he wasn't sure what it was lol)

Absolutely amazing! I feel so inspired after watching it all in one go. I barely listened to Porter’s songs before, I mostly listened to “Shelter” so I didn’t expect anything going into the interview and I loved it all. Good one!

Porter!!! What a guy. When I heard lil Wayne come in on that interview on my first full listen of Smile I instantly got it. This is his weezy rebirth era where he proves he IS a rockstar! Fav song is Kitsune Maison freestyle but love the whole thing. Gonna get the vinyl cuz it deserves it. RRHOF 2035

Looong time Porter fan, and this was a joy to watch. Really loved the window into his process and the rare look at some of the plugins that he uses. Been so curious about how he got the vocals on Nuture, and knew it was something a little cutty. Definitely will want to check out manipulator and toraverb now <3.

I don't believe Porter ever collaborated with Tiesto, unless I'm missing something...but great stuff here! So stoked to see this happening!

Avo k

i loved this so much

The best review I ever saw of smile came from a youtube short, where the presenter said "it's like you've been let loose in a candy store to grab everything you want, and then on your way out the shopkeeper tells you something really profound about life"

Shew

what mic was he talking about?? the warm audio 60s clone

ime

This was amazing thank you so much for taking the time to do this episode, both of you were great together chatting about the album and porter's journey to finishing songs

I doubt the tape notes description writer would know that if it were the case...plus, the clarity credit was in the liner notes day of release. He just took his name off as a full collab. Just thought it might be a mistake since he toured with tiesto early on, but they never made music together to my knowledge. Not a big deal though, fantastic episode!

Thank you for this amazing interview. I saw Porter at the Helsinki 2012 Renegade Festival but didn’t realize at the time what a profound guiding inspiration he would become in the future, helping me to stay authentic in my pursuit of creativity.

fading out on the line "bitch I'm Taylor swift" is hilarious. anyways this rules

scott leiker

"So Porter, if you play a blast of the master we ca-" *porter absolutely cranks Russian Roulette* lmao

I had actually never listened to Porter's music, but this episode won me over. What an incredibly nice guy, I love his whole philosophy and attitude to making music. Super inspiring.

Tim Adam-Smith

This is great to hear! Happy that we helped you discover a new artist!

br0k3nf1ng3r

I would think probably the 47

i joined the patreon just to watch this

Tim Adam-Smith

Fantastic! Who else would you like to see on the show?!

Nick

the cheerleader guitar being a bit out of tune, but still being in there for energy purposes, reminded me of brian wilson. even when harmonies weren’t perfect he’d throw them in there for the wall of sound

Michael Favila

Agreed. Would love to see something like this from Madeon or BT

Tim Adam-Smith

Hey Shane! Porter is actually of the most requested artists we’ve had. Not for everyone sure, but really interesting guy nonetheless! Fear not, there’ll be other artists more up your street coming up!

Wizard Spoon

What a lovely episode! I think Porter does an extraordinary job of imbuing his work with a sense of self. It’s this fingerprint that makes me always recognize a “Porter track” even before knowing it’s his, no matter how different his records have been sonically. A very special sensibility, and one I love to witness as a listener! Thank you both for a wonderful podcast!

Chi Thanh

get skrillex on the show! please!

Ken

Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Semetary, Gezebelle Gaburgably!

Josh

Get madeon

Jane Remover is the next/current big deal, please get her!!!

I love this man so much, i missed nurture but this album has been life changing for me both as a producer and listener - it is so reminiscent of my emo teens but also collides with all that i love about electronic music. i've watched all of his streams and i enjoyed the tape notes breakdown to dig more into process and philosophy of what leads to great songs. <3

lach

Is there any way I can purchase these songs’ original stems? I would be really grateful if you can share a way!

Tim Adam-Smith

Ah, not through us sorry mate! Could you reach out to Porter on Instagram or something? Maybe his subreddit will be a good source of info - they're pretty active I think?

gurg

get isoxo or knock2 on here!! they're incredible!

Tim Adam-Smith

Glad you enjoyed! This was such a popular episode when it dropped!
