Callum Ward

Is there a technique you discovered while making these tracks from any of your collaborators on this project?

Oliver Benson

sound selection - where do you find all of your unique sounds (synths, percussion, etc) and what drives the decision-making process of which sounds to use?

Callum Ward

there’s been some great examples of producers branching out from their typical style over the last year or so and collaborating with surprising artists (eg kenny beats producing geese) do you have a goal genre / artist to work with ?

Tobin Miller

Neeeeed to know how he made those sounds in FEISTY!!!!!

Aleksandar J

i am so happy im giving tape notes my money Question for Fred: How much does the genre matter when finding people to collaborate with? You have songs with people like Skepta but also the Japanese House. How does an artist pop up on your radar and what determines if you work with them?

Ross Drummond

With USB002 being so different from track to track what is you think that makes them “Fred Again” tracks?

Ross Drummond

How do you approach working with such different genres? Do you go into a track thinking I’m going to make X type of track or does it evolve along the way? Especially when collaborating with different artists.

Callum Ward

what is your ultimate logic pro tip

Alex Davidson

Hi Fred, I’m a massive fan and can’t wait to see you at Ally Pally on the 27th! How do you set up Logic to get down ideas so quickly? Do you have a few templates assigned with specific sounds depending on the type of mood or genre? And how much time do you generally spend tweaking specific sounds once you’ve got a rough idea down? I’m always getting too bogged down in finding a really specific sound wayyyyy too early and getting in my own way when trying to fully realise an idea!

the void inclusive

How do you keep your motivation up when times are tough? How would you recommend finding a good mentor if I’m not in Brian Eno’s singing group?

Joshua Ray

Love you Tape Notes! such an amazing program truly. Question for Fred: How does he find his unique sound design throughout these different genres. What is the tension between being a producer and artist. Is there a research phase and sound design exploration or just more tracks focused? Bascially, whats the ratio between making souds and making tracks. MUCH LOVE!

Nick Webb

Wow!!! Fantastic! Go TN! These are some questions from me - What do you do to keep perspective when writing? How did you learn to get so good at playing pads / finger drumming? How did you do the slow down / speed up effect around 2 minutes in on Lights Burn Dimmer? Thank you for all the music Fred!

Rob Laska

Hey Fred!! Greetings from Toronto!! You seem like someone who is always on the go and always creating, whether it’s on trains, planes, or cars! I wanted to ask you how / if you schedule creativity, as someone who also tours and produces music, it can sometimes be tough to carve out time and be in a headspace while not letting life and the day to day of tour get in the way! Also, would love some useful logic tricks you’ve discovered :) Thanks so much!!

Manthematiks

Hey Fred, greetings from Kenya.. Your versatility is incredibly inspiring..how do you approach your decision making of who you will work with? Or perhaps how do you know a specific song will be dope for Skepta vs a different artist like Ed Sheeran?

William Card

Hi Fred - i find your story of writing music out in the world (near the river, on a airplane etc) to be quite moving. With this rapid pace, what do you do to make sure your productions are still mixed/mastered for the club or for commercial release? do you have a strict set of gear or a process that you trust?

dashmaster

Hey, what's something you thought was important when starting out that you realized wasn't all too important now. And what things get you out of a creative rut or move forward despite wanting things to be better than they are? Thanks. -Etiyene (Eh Tee En)

Joe Rose

Fred you seem to be a master of chords and I know you helped out Brian Eno with music theory. Do you have any nuggets of theory that you find yourself going back to in order to achieve lush or emotionally captivating melodies and progressions?

HORT Music

Hi Frederick, I gather that a lot of your process is finding these samples and building structures around them. Have you ever built the structure and then found the sample to bring in?

Cris Pearson

Question: When composing a song, how do you think about the overall arc, the interplay between sections, and the layering of smaller elements?

Eduardo

congrats john!

Rance Riley

It looks like you’re usually just running Pro-L2 on your mixbus. Would you mind sharing how you set it up while mixing into it? I’m sure the setup is probably pretty simple, but I’ve always been curious how you’re using it in context rather than just at the end of a finished mix. Any tips on how you think about mixing into it would be super appreciated.

Felder Music

Woah! This is gonna be EPIC! Hey Fred! Greetings from Denver! How do you go about capturing such strong emotion in your tracks? Do you begin with a "feeling" you're trying to convey? If so, what is the most impactful component to capturing these emotions? Chord Progression, Lyrics, Instrument/Sound selection? Thanks for the opportunity John!

Denis Granha

Hey Fred, coming from a Piano background I would love to know how do you approach the drums and percussion of your songs. Is it by playing them with midi and building layers, starting from samples and tweaking them, using drum machines or how?

Lauren

Hey Fred -- I love getting visibility into your music process through the twitch streams, its been an incredible learning experience for me. One thing we don't get to see much is the arrangement process - can you talk a little bit about how you think about arrangement and some of the sounds you use as accents? Always enjoy hearing the sounds that get used one or two times only and wonder about the thought processes behind them!

Alex Philp

Many of Fred’s most iconic songs seem to be built around a seemingly simple idea e.g. a bass line for talk of the town, victory lap, rumble or Danielle or a synth lead for glow, strong or marea. However the sounds always feel fresh and new. Are there any rules or building blocks Fred follows to create such unique sounds/ideas, or is it more a case of trying lots of different ideas and seeing what works?

Harry Hayes

Logic Pro is king (obviously) and you seem to enjoy using the logic stock instruments / presets. For us fellow logic users out there, what are the best stock plugins that have found their way into your music?

OITU

Ah so glad to hear Fred's back here to inspire us all again! And with that in mind my question is this... What is something about your creative process that has remained pretty much the same since the first time you were here? Is the iPhone still your fav mic and speaker? Cheers brother, so thankful for how you seem to be permanently inspired!

VDMR

A lot of your songs seem to be born from a drone. Either because this creates a harmonic base that fits a specific vocal or because it creates a soundscape that captures the feeling the best. Can you show us how you create drones and how these can become the seed from where a full song can sprout? Thank you!

Quentin Kuth

What is your best advise to someone who wants to pursue a music career full time?

Quentin Kuth

How often did you want to quit during your journey?

Juno Morey

When you were starting out, did you think intentionally about fitting a lane/genre/sound when choosing what to release, or even while making music, so that your project could have an identifiable/consistent sound?

Wxmell

Do you ever find yourself having periods of feeling uninspired? What do you do to remedy those moments?

Brison Caelum

Just one question Fred... How? Actually better question, Fred... Why?

andrewtkearns

Fred - I’d like to contextualize this question by saying I love the music you’re making and the performances you’ve been putting out there lately. It’s incredible and I don’t necessarily want you to change. That being said, your Tiny Desk concert was a masterpiece. It’s been one of the most creative and influential works of art I’ve ever seen and it changed the way I approach music. Do you think you’ll ever lean into that style again?

Tim Adam-Smith

Hahaha fair questions! They might need a full day’s discussion though 🤣

argiilloso

1. FRED! what are your best tips for speeding up song making in logic pro, aside from the obvious such as - making many songs and just getting used to it. I'm looking more for the tips that sped up your process once you were already fairly comfortable with the basics. 2. Most often used: 2a. Chords 2b. Key of song + BPM 2c. PLUG-iNs! 2d. Do you have any saved plug-ins or effects that you throw on nearly every track and know you won't even need to toggle anything they'll just hit???? 3. Not a question, just wanted to share how much myself and my wife love you mate. You bring us so much joy through your music and overall vibe. 4. Can you break down 'adore u' if you haven't already ?? what causes the little glitchy pitch shift on a lot of the synth sounds in it?? 5. & this is the one i know that probably gets me knocked off the list for any of these being answered, but it's always worth a shot. ............I'm releasing my debut music project in March, i go by @argiilloso thats my iG handle and music name. I KNOW that I have a gift for melody and lyricism. yet, i'm just okay at production, its my hurdle at this point. if u ever wanted to cook it would be a dream to craft melodies over some heat u cooked up. i know we will one day either way. i'm based in Connecticut and could meet u in NYC, Boston, etc. OK i left my pride at the door, i'll be going now lol. TYSM 4 UR AMAZING MUSiC FRED U R A BEAUTiFUL SOURCE OF LiGHT & LiFE!

Philipp Kaminsky

Hi Fred, what is your favorite song on the album and why is it beto‘s horns? Just kidding. I would love to know since the last time you where on tape notes is there something that fundamentally changed in your process or is there something you came across recently that changed your workflow or your approach to certain aspects in your creativity?

Zetier

how do u manage such a high amount of releases? both technically and creatively? do you hold back to projects that never come out or u share most of your work?

Christof Baer (musicmanta.com)

Where do your ideas come from? Inside out, so you hear a song in your head first, or outside in, you hear sounds, rhythms, and melodies from the world or collaborators?

Olly

People are always talking about how talented you are as a writer and producer, and rightfully so but please tell us who you’ve worked with that blew you away in a technical sense?

Tom

When you’re developing an idea into a finished track, how do you make sure the sonic palette stays aligned with the original feeling or vision you have for the song?

_ADDIS x Johannes Creuzberg

How would you use ai on music production? I have seen Brain Eno used scripter and with that in mind, would you have ideas to share or exchange with other creators use ai within logic capabilities?

Nate

Fred-what tips do you have for bedroom producers to leverage minimal tools and networks for polishing tracks and receiving quality feedback?

Yves Ardelt

Has the extensive touring with live musicians last year changed the way you approach songwriting/production? (PS: Can you talk about how it was playing with Philo :) )

Yahya Mirza

fred pls can u say my name so i can turn it into a fire prod tag

David Yu

I'd love to know his perspective on AI music, where does he think it's going and does he ever envision adding it into his workflow?

Ricardo Escobar

Do you start your track with ideas, or just throwing paint and the wall and finding something that resonates with you?

James Wilson

You seem in the initial stages of creating a piece of work to use speed to your advantage, riding on the high of inspiration to piece together a base for your track. Once that initial conception has been realised what steps do you take to be definitive and concrete in finishing your tracks creatively?
