John is joined once again by Fred Gibson, better known as Fred again.., to talk about how he wrote, recorded and produced the album USB.

Fred Gibson is an award-winning British songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer whose musical journey began collaborating with legendary producer Brian Eno at just 16. Since then Fred has established himself as a  globally successful solo artist.

Alongside his studio output, from his acclaimed ‘Actual Life’ trilogy to the record ‘ten days’ Fred’s live shows have become global events, from Glastonbury to arena-scale collaborations, notably alongside FourTet and Skrillex, while his evolving USB project culminated in sold-out international performances and four homecoming shows at London’s Alexandra Palace in 2026.

Sitting down once again at Fred’s house, Fred and John discuss the unlikely inspirations behind the songs on USB, his advice for aspiring musicians and producers, the gear essential to his process and much more! Plus Fred answers questions from our Patreon subscribers!

Tracks discussed: solo, ..FEISTY, HARDSTYLE 2

Much looking forward to this! Good guests as of late. More interested personally in actual producers over singers.

Olly

This is going to be enjoyed a great deal.

Been waiting for a video ep with Fred! Can’t wait to dive in!

Matias

Hii why is the episode down?

Julian Prior

Really love that Fred is so open about the process he uses to create music. An inspiration for young folks and old farts like me just learning music production for the first time.

Bianca Escribano

Love the creativity of Fred! Its so refreshing. Thank you for this episode!!

Chris Swift

He's just the most down to earth guy and musically he's a genius, no doubt about it. I've not seen him live but that has to change, his energy is contagious.

Van Geronilla

Wait those pitched snares remind me of jamiexx’s “oh my gosh”

Van Geronilla

Can I ask why I rarely hear Producer talking about how they make the bass? It’s one of my biggest obstacles

Jack

such an inspiring episode - thanks so much.

timmy tim tim

amazing episode. subscribed specifically to watch full ep. great work team

Tim Adam-Smith

The audio of both is available on Spotify etc! There is unfortunately no video of the earlier 2 episodes. 75 wasn’t filmed and 105 we were not allowed by Fred’s team to release it. Glad you enjoyed his third trip to TN!

Rio Tafoya

I was hoping to find a video of fred showing his process this extensively, is there a raw uncut version? 👀

Antonia Gorman

I love hearing how he tells a story through music. Sometimes I feel like he's painting a picture with music but more than a picture, it's like a snapshot of a day and the feelings of the person experiencing at that moment in time. So glad to be alive at the same time as Fred JP Gibson!! 🥹💗🎶🎛️

Ross Drummond

Ha! I had him stumped! Thanks for asking my question!

chimp Man

Am I able to download this video?

Fabian Martin

This format is incredible — such a deep and inspiring insight into the workflow and mindset behind the music. Fred is obviously an outstanding artist, but what really stands out is how clearly and naturally he communicates his process. It makes everything feel accessible and real. The conversation is also guided really well — the questions come at just the right moments and create a natural flow.

Fabian Martin

Huge respect to everyone putting this together!

magma

where can i watch the episode 105 (fred again) ? It's not showing up on the archive..? I thought with "Extended Players Premium" tire you can watch episodes from 101 onwards?

Tim Adam-Smith

Hi there, we never had a video for that episode unfortunately. We did film it but weren’t allowed to put it out by Fred’s team at the time. Hope you’re otherwise enjoying EPP!

magma

oh i see! thank you for clarifying that! cheers

Jaydot

this was really great session

Joel Skoda

As somebody who only plays guitar, piano, bass, and comes up with vocals/melodies, watching Fred composition process is like watching a painter describe pointism, or impressionism, while they make a painting. I am watching, and I understand what they're explaining, yet I still have no idea how to do it.

Yarik Magda

Very Inspiring session, thank you! I see he has over 100 tracks per project, my logic collapses after 30 lol, and fascinating to see how you can turn stock plugins and presets into such music, only MAESTRO can do that!

H8Math

All is great, apart from Fred just killed the plugin industry :-) Subscribed for more! Yeah and piglet squid rules!

zørssa

Awesome episode, thanks a lot!

MiekeJames

Would love time stamps on these when I'm rewatching episode segments 🙏

Tim Adam-Smith

We’re working on being able to do that with future episodes!

Artom Markevic

Thank you for that episode! It’s always such an inspiration to see Fred ☺️🫶🏼

Marcus

How did you not go over the bass? It's the biggest part of every song he does

Marcus

Yes, they skip it over in every video

Tim Adam-Smith

Always way too much that we could discuss! We like to let the artist lead what they want to talk about!

Kevin

its actually straight forward, maybe that's why he didn't mention it. he's using a ramzoid 808 cooker vst, and then sidechaining the 808 to the kick with kickstart's audio input. hope that helps!
