Craig Kelly

How much does the environment you’re in (whether it be studio, apartment or otherwise) affect your songwriting and workflow?

james A rushent

Plz tell me about the mix on borderline. Especially the top end on the drums.

Alfredo Guzman - X3ON

Can he breakdown or explain a bit the process of creating the beat of "Skeletons” for Travis Scott

Joel Skoda

GTFO, WHAT?! Next you're gonna get Radiohead, Clipse with Pharell, and Geese! When developing solo in the studio, how do you decipher which seed ideas to nurture, do you ever feel wrong and toss it out or find a way to hone the initial spark? Do you ever record any more acoustic piano and guitar based compositions? I feel with such beautifully crafted melodies they could really carry a tune on a sparse set of instruments. Would be an interesting 'unplugged Tame Impala' sort of Wildflowers (Tom Petty) record.

Projjol Banerji

A lot of people have described this album (Deadbeat) as Kevin’s take on EDM? Does he see it this way? When making this album what musical themes or direction did he want to go in? Did he want to keep anything from Currents when he started deadbeat?

Daniel

Can he break down the Drum sound on it might be time? I adore the blown up room sound. Also that feels like an outlier Tame Impala track and I’m curious what type of influences Kevin may have had to make a track like that. Much love Kevin is the king of groove!

Joe

What’s a decision you made on a track that felt wrong at the time, but ended up defining the song?

Lucas Plummer

For someone who primarily uses a lot of acoustic instruments meant for a more indie rock sound, what did you use instead for your techno inspired track Ethereal Connection? Love the new creative direction.

Josh

Hi Kevin and Hi John ! Thank you both for sharing your art and expertise. At this moment, how are you? After following success and awards for your work that you may not think is good 100 percent of the time but choose to release it to the world anyways. What’s your daily routine looking like these days especially when you’re post art release. I’ve listened and followed you for most of your work and you seem to have a separation complex with your own work. I’d like to hear more. (I feel similar) I’m a big fan and you inspire me to push music forward. Thank you and cheers to you and your success. - josh Ps Can you send me a orchid please 😭💌

Josh

Agreed

Lukas Valencia

If given only 24 hours to start and finish a new musical idea; who would you pick to collaborate with (dead or alive), what one piece of gear must you have with you, what would be the snack of choice and finally, where would you want it to be?

Josh

Agreed John please ask about both versions He put out a single version then said oops and made another for the album Thanks

Sirotkin

If you were offered to make a track from scratch exclusively in-the-box — with the DAW of your choice and plugins — would that be an interesting self-limiting challenge, or do you love outboard gear too much: its tactility and sound?

Robbie Sko

I’d love to hear him go deep on the sonic difference between Innerspeaker and Lonerism versus what came after. Those two records have a specific raw psychedelic rock texture that Currents and The Slow Rush moved away from into something more polished and pop-leaning, and then the latest album pushed further into electronic territory. What was driving those shifts, and does he have any interest in taking a sharp left turn for the next one, something genuinely unexpected, maybe even outside the psych space entirely?

Yahya Mirza

Absolute insane artist pull btw great work team Hello Kevin, how do you stay honest in your music when you’re still figuring yourself out as a person? also - Hi John! :)

Fabian Rangel

What is your go-to drum mic’ing setup? Favorite mics to use?

Fraser wilson

In my best Alan Partridge, "Back of the net"! What a catch! Id love to know what of the early limitations and "stock mojo" he would have had, say starting on a cracked Ableton, that have endured through to the heady heights he is at now. Whats never been beatable for him. Also, does he put it down to his ear or is he a big geek out on the technical side of things? Feels like he is a bit of a sound scientist that also writes incredible songs. Cant wait for the episode to drop.

Kevin Delgado

How does Kevin achieve the bass on Past Life/Gossip live version? I've been trying endlessly and I just can't get it right.

Yamil Ortiz

Love the blown up room sound on this track. I second this :)

Yamil Ortiz

Oooof, been waiting a long time for this one. Thanks John for making this podcast possible, it has allowed me to learn so much from some of my absolute heroes. - How did Kevin make the crazy synth bass on Past Life/Mutant Gossip? Feedback loop? - Speaking of Gossip, how did he achieve the thin, DI-esque guitar sound on Gossip? It's thin and clean but breaks up dynamically in some parts. - What kind of flanger does he use on drums (eg. Mind Mischief, The Moment)? It sounds so lush and shines in the top end. - I know this is more of a pedal question more than a production question, but how does he manage to reduce or eliminate the hiss and noise from using a Dyna Comp at the end of his chain in live shows? Love the Holy Grail reverb into Dyna Comp combo. - A session breakdown of "Let It Happen" would be legendary

Harry Kaden

Awesome guest to have. I have 2 questions, so feel free to pick either: 1. One of my favorite songs you’ve ever done is the Miguel Waves remix. How do you approach your own work vs remixing or collaborating with others? 2. Your records are consistently sonically excellent. Sometimes during tracking, I have trouble moving onto the next element of a song when the current element I’m working on doesn’t feel finished. How close to a final sound do you have to get before you will move on to laying down the next part?

Cameron Limbrick

I heard that you gained recognition through Myspace around 2007. Can you tell us a bit about that experience and what you recommend unknown artists use today to gain fans? Streaming often doesn't pay enough, and there is talk about many artists moving away from services and moving to Direct-to-Consumer sales. What are your thoughts on this shift? Looking ahead, how do you see artists getting recognized in the future, and is it necessary to have your catalog on services like Spotify?

Nick Rathsack

Were you a natural born singer/songwriter or did you have to develop your voice?

ColbyKeyz

What separates the good producers from the great producers

Digby Tomei

How'd the relationship with Tom Cosm come about for Telepathic instruments/Orchid?

Sam

Amazing guest to have, I'm suchhh a big fan. 1) Your music has always had a distinct flavor to it. How have you developed your "inner voice" over time? 2) Sometimes, I find it difficult when starting something new and staring at a blank ableton live project screen. Even if I have an idea I find it difficult to get it out fast enough before my inspiration fades. How do you start a project? What are your favorite shortcuts for getting ideas out quickly?

Wes Engstrom

When you’re building a track, how do you decide which melodies or production elements are essential to the song’s identity, and which ones are just adding clutter?

Noah

OMG MY HERO! Favorite plugins? What's your vocal chain / effects? Any tips on drum processing? Would love to know anything about the songwriting process and sounddesign and processing!! And would be mind blowing to see any Ableton projects, to see into ur mind! Been a fan for over 10 years!

OSCAR NOVEMBER

what did you learn from Dave Fridmann that you still think about today? not necessarily just when it comes to mixing, but in the overall production too!

gabeyts

Did you teach yourself how to play guitar and the keys? If you could start over how would you focus on learning to get to where you are today? Is there any specific chord/borrowed chord sauce you choose for your songs or is it just vibes/playing around as you go?

gabeyts

yes and perhaps was the decision about the low bass peer pressure? of course its his music and he can do as he likes, but the initial version landed due to the emotion the arrangement and climax created, not the presence/lack of bass?

Lewis Brideson

Keen to hear about Kevin’s approach to tracking and processing drum machines! And how being an acoustic drummer has influenced this.

Brady Daniell-Smith

You've talked about your dad warning you that turning music into work would strip away its mystery. Do you think AI music is doing something similar — demystifying the process in a way that changes how we value it?

Noah

Also, since u started working as a kid doing multitrack recordings, then going to a 16 track digital recorder, then to Ableton, did u keep that «multitrack recording» type of mentality when working? Like laying down a motif, then playing on top of that, then listening, and then laying another idea, almost like a looper pedal in a sense? Hope that makes sense

ALASE

What is a lesson/mistake that you have made in music or production that you would advise others not to make?

Frederik Roland

Nice. Can you present him this: Lets say you recorded some tracks and you got an idea running. And now next move is arrangement. What drives you to feel and finish the arrangement structure? Is it the feeling of telling a story? And that source then leads you step by step into a full arrangement and finished track?

Miles

As a longtime fan of both Tame Impala and electronic music, it was really inspiring to hear the influence of dance records in the making of Deadbeat. I think you did an incredible job exploring new genres whilst still maintaining the signature Tame Impala sound. How was your approach to songwriting and/or production different on Deadbeat compared to your previous albums?

Phil Owen

Hey Kevin, how do you find the motivation to finish tracks? I find that after spending hundreds of hours on one track, I have a tough time remembering why I used to love it. At that point, it also feels almost impossible to listen to it objectively. Do you have any techniques that help you get through the final production stage?

Obie

The Drums of Borderline! LIve played? Samples? Processing, mixing. Sounds amazing.

Ozcan

has this been recorded?

Tim Adam-Smith

Hey, we had to reschedule and we don’t know when that will be yet.

Tim Adam-Smith

Hey we had to reschedule this due to Kevin taking ill at the last minute and still trying to tie down a new date. Fingers crossed!

Miles

Curious if this interview fell through in the end or if it’s still planned for release?

Tim Adam-Smith

We had to cancel at last minute due to Kevin being ill on recording day - now trying to find another slot in his schedule!
