TENHAT

If you would have to reduce to one synthesizer, which one would it be?

Craig Kelly

How do you know what direction to take the next record in? Is there something that inspired you to go in a more “live” direction this time as opposed to modular like on PRITH?

Anup Jonchhe

Any advice for finding people to collaborate with? How do you find your musical community? and when do you use them vs doing it all yourself?

Alex

you've spoken out against record labels and streaming services a lot recently - what's your advice to young musicians starting out?

Alex

does it feel different making music in London compared to LA?

Alex

sometimes you seem to use silence like a lead instrument... do you have to fight the urge to keep adding to your tracks?

Butch

Can you talk about the instrument that plays the lead melody on “Doesn’t just happen”? It sounds like a bowed string but there’s an unusual quality to it. Definitely the coldest and most haunting sound on the record. Devastatingly good.

Vicente Sanfuentes

Question for James: i imagine that switching from composer, to producer, to singer and other roles takes a very agile approach. Mindsets are very different. How does he manages to it? thanks! vicente

Spencer J

I was hoping to see this after first hearing the album and now it’s happening! Considering your progression as an artist, how do you see yourself now and what’s your plan to guide other/newer artists towards their goals? Lovely album, can’t wait for the interview! Cheers

Simon Larry

how does james trust a record he made? what gives him the confidence, especially in stripped back productions, to say „yes, this works the way it is“. because for me his music seems to always work and that is remarkable!

Khunn Egga Oo

As an engineer myself I'm always paying attention to the engineers that my favorite artists work with and I see that you worked with Bob Mackenzie extensively on this latest record. What role does an engineer play for you when you are very technically sound as well? Thank you! - Edgar

Magic Getio

You recently collaborated with A$AP Rocky on a newly leaked, unreleased track that is untitled. What was it like collaborating with him?

Joel Skoda

Just finished listening to the wonderful new record start to finish while on a late night moonlit walk, which felt fitting. For your music that is haunting in the best ways, do you typically find melodies first and have that as the song seed to build around? Or do you build a rhythm foundation and then start free styling over it with vocal and keys until you unlock something? Since you modify sounds so regularly, do you still usually trust those first melodies or rhythms you find, or do you keep fiddling with the original sketch and undo those founding pillars to go wherever something may lead you?

Nick Webb

How important is sonic originality to songwriting?

Nick Webb

Hey Tenhat. His answer might be different now but he was asked this on his Vault earlier this year and he said the Novation Summit. Cheers

Tim B.

How do you think about low end (arrangement) and how are you processing your kick and bass. Are you using tools like Phase alignment/EQ/compression and if so how are you using them

Cem-Levin

how do you find inspiration? do you ever have to "force" yourself to make music when feeling uninspired?

Sam Farrar

I would love to hear your thoughts on Rick Rubin's "audience comes last" concept. I agree 100% with it, but validation still feels pretty great AFTER you've created something beautiful or unifying. Is it hard to ignore when something you've made does great on the world's stage, especially when it comes to the next thing you set out to make?

Teddy Friedman

James, I know you used to be a big Geist user for making drums in the past. Seeing that it’s no longer offered in the same form, what do/would you implement to into your workflow to achieve similar drum programming & sonic shaping? Can you also talk about your use of bitcrushing over the years? Really appreciate your generosity of knowledge!

Anthony Bider

Hi James! If someone comes to you with lyrics and a melody, what’s your process for building and producing around it? Do you find you try to fit it onto a click-track, or just go off the grid?

Kriz Main

More technical questions I'd love to know. Do you use some sort of Sample Manager like Audio Finder to organize and use samples more efficiently? All Logic people know the browser hasn't had an update in a while either so that's also a factor. Have you found your replacement to Geist? If not I really recommend checking out Patterning. I remember you did a lot of modular patches on your last album. Was it also same case here? Do you find recording things as audio and committing to audio a good way to move forward with track rather than doing minor tweaks?
