John is joined by Kevin Parker, aka Tame Impala, to talk about how he wrote, recorded and produced the album ‘Deadbeat’.

*This is part 1 of the episode, featuring tracks 'My Old Ways' and 'Loser'. We also recorded Kevin talking about the track 'Dracula'. However, due to publishing restrictions we're not allowed to release that part on this membership tier yet. But don't worry: part 2, featuring 'Dracula', will be with you at the start of November!

Kevin launched the electronic and psychedelic rock-influenced Tame Impala in 2007 as a home recording project. Throughout the 2010s, Tame Impala became a huge critical and commercial success, winning two Grammys and selling out shows worldwide. Kevin has collaborated with numerous other artists including Justice, Gorillaz and Dua Lipa, and is regularly cited as one of the industry’s most influential artists. The fifth Tame Impala album, 'Deadbeat', featuring worldwide hits ‘Dracula’ and ‘Loser’, arrived in October 2025.

Joining John from his LA studio, Kevin shares what he calls his ‘astoundingly boring’ approach to producing his famous vocals (spoiler: he’s being too modest!), how he created the ‘Deadbeat drum beat’, being inspired by The Strokes on this record, the essential plugins that shaped the album’s sound, plus he answers questions from our Patreons!

Love Tame. No fault of our mate John but I think Kevin held back quite a bit on the technical side - probably not on purpose. Would've loved to hear more about those details he brushed up as 'general knowledge'. Great episode nonetheless!

30:50 "its great because you get to express that vulnerability which people relate too and allow them to get them into your world and see themselves in your world" I totally agree with this. What a delight to listen to the creative process of a mastermind and how fragile can be as human but at the same time that's the Beaty of it... Amazing

2026-09-15 18:00 in the rare event of people like Kevin Parker, please push them for more detailed tech stuff. kinda basic and this is such a rare chance. songwriting and all the stuff that led up to it. and lyric crafting. mixing stuff and engening and plug Ins etc. esp shaping the ideas into diff phases of what the songs become, esp in the final stages when your pushing yourself

There is so much that we could have talked about and just not enough time!

Siggy Freud

Great interviewer. You let him get into the zone when talking and didn’t interrupt him. Thanks for doing this!

Matt Polly

Shout out Matt Colton at Metropolis who mastered it!

Jack Dinger

Just to be clear, was this a demo, an early mix, later mix, or final mix we’re hearing?

Kai Wade

Hello, to get access to the Dracula mix we need to upgrade the subcription ? Is it on the full video that's locked ?

Tim Adam-Smith

You need to be on our Extended Players Premium tier for the Dracula additional content. It’ll be released to Extended Players too in November. Not a ploy from us - just the terms we were able to agree with Kevin’s team 😊

Admir

Does this mean that there will be more parts? Really enjoyed watching this, good job guys!

Tim Adam-Smith

Yes part 2 featuring Dracula will be out start of November!

Admir

Is it already filmed? If not, please ask him to share more production details such as what plugins did he use and how he used them. In this, it was more talking about the idea of the album, he didn't show much but again, I understand that maybe he's trying to gatekeep but presure him😅 there's hungry producers like me who look up to him

Tim Adam-Smith

Our own breakdown of Dracula with Kevin is out at the start of November - he obviously made this deal with MWTM before us haha!

Cole Hairston

@26:51 - I think Kevin forgot they did do a video for this song and it is quite trippy haha 😅
