John is joined by Giles Martin to talk about how he recorded and produced the album ‘Rubber Soul: New Special Edition’.

Giles Martin is a British composer, producer and arranger. Assisting his father, Beatles producer Sir George Martin, in the studio from an early age, Giles has been closely involved with the Beatles’ catalogue, producing the 50th anniversary remix and deluxe editions of ‘Revolver’, ‘Sgt. Pepper’ and ‘Let It Be’, among many others. ‘Rubber Soul: New Special Edition’, featuring new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes, alongside previously unreleased session recordings and home demos, is released on 2nd October 2026.

Sitting down in Giles’ studio at Abbey Road and digging into the original four track recordings as well as his updated mixes, Giles gives a unique insight into the studio recording processes of the greatest band in the world and their working relationship with his father George. He reveals George’s production secrets and lifts the lid on the meticulous process, as well as the joys and pressures, of re-mixing this new edition of ‘Rubber Soul’.

Tracks discussed: Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), In My Life

Its like seeing a classic in 4K!

I wish he would have asked Giles why the sitar was removed from Take 1 of Norwegian wood. It's clearly audible on the Anthology 2 version. And why did they do a new 2026 album mix instead of using the ones done in 2023? 😊

Josiah Reynolds

They are the same 2023 mixes, just renamed for the release.

Absolutely fantastic insight, I've dreamed about this level of detail since I was an newly-obsessed 11 year old! When Giles kept stopping just before the end of Drive My Car I was going mad though, I really wanted to hear the last few seconds of that take after the fadeout on the record! Presumably nothing more than the typical "one of them announces 'right then, that's enough' and it meanders to a stop" we've heard on other full takes of theirs but still, the temptation to slap his hand away from the space bar would've been too much for me, I'm afraid.

Giles and the Beatles = number 1 ☀️ Giles the sixth Beatles!

Jimmie Rudolfsson

And you know this how? And they've never done this with other remixed tracks so why start now? Both Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out are listed as 2023 remixes. So there's no logic to why the Rubber Soul tracks would be named 2026 mixes if they're not.

It's interesting to see that they've tempo mapped the sessions.

Because Take 1 is the Take pre Overdubs. The one on Anthology is the Take 1 with all the Overdubs. It's labeled wrong on Anthology.

Not that we’re aware of. Are you able to give us any more detail and we’ll check out?

Hello again. It was a momentary problem it seems, because it works perfectly now. Before, I also couldn't whole screen it. Anyway, I will delete the comment later, let's not distract people :) Thanks for the great work.t
