John links up with hyper-pop royalty, Laura Les and Dylan Brady, aka 100 gecs, to talk about their latest album ‘10,000 Gecs’.

100 gecs first broke onto the scene with their debut album ‘1000 Gecs’ in 2019. Capturing attention online and amongst music fans, the innovative record was described as ‘one of the year's most fascinating, exhilarating experimental pop albums’. Their second studio album ‘10,000 Gecs’, released in 2023, sees them maintain their status as hyperpop trailblazers, this time blending pop-punk and ska in with their signature maximalist sound.

Reflecting on their writing process and how it has changed over the years, the conversation covers a range of topics, from the vast number of alternatives each track goes through, to the crazy sound design and effects that make up such an enormous part of their style.

Tracks discussed: Hollywood Baby, 757, The Most Wanted Person In The United States

Been listening too all the episodes on this podcast for about a year, but most off the artist on here are not music I actually listen too. BUT when I saw that 100 gecs was on the newest episode I almost droped out off my chair, never thought they would be on here. They are by FAR my favorit artists at the time and almost the only thing I listen too. Loved the episode, keep it up and hopefully more artist like this in the future.

This was so cool to listen to! I have spent so much time learning to make my own music sound clean and pristine but it was refreshing and inspiring to hear about making sounds with a complete disregard for the “correct” or standard way of doing things. Personally I found this very inspiring!

56:30-57:11 funniest interview i've ever watched i'm dead: "that dog isn't laura's new dog barking? no. my dog doesn't bark. really? no. all the sound effects are actually just made from sine waves............................. really? they're all just sine waves playing back at different speeds and volumes. it's just FM8. yeah. it's always FM8. mhmm................................................. so... i don't know what to say to that"

You did an amazing job getting so much information out of them. I hadn't heard of them until this interview so thank you. I'm really enjoying the album.
